Five-Spice Glazed Nuts

The frying is a turnoff for me too. I'd try to make this by toasting the nuts and then sprinkle them with some melted butter, some sugar (1 cup is way too much) and salt and spice.

Salted Caramel Frosting

I went with the double caramel, 1 stick of butter suggestions and had a huge success with this! I spread it on a ginger cake. Next time, I'll try to replace the water in the caramel with rhum or scotch...

How much did you pay for strawberries?

Thank you all for your responses. Did any of you ever buy at the Marché Central? Do they offer better deals?

How much did you pay for strawberries?

My dad and I made a big batch of strawberry jam yesterday and we went to the Jean-Talon market to buy the fruit. We bought them without thinking about it but then, while preparing the jam, figured we had been seriously ripped off: we payed 10$ for what we think was half a crate (merchant counted it as one crate) or six small red plastic containers of day old strawberries (fresh ones were 2 $ more). I had seen 1,50$ for one small container at Valmont the day before... Were did the deal go?

Sherry-Tomato Vinaigrette

This tastes great! Poured it over mixed greens and a can of tuna and sudried tomatos for a quick tuna salad.

not so sweet/non fruity dark rum cocktails?

For a quick apéro or if I run out of mint, I simply drink my rum with some tonic water and maybe a splash of lime. I find that the aroma of the rhum comes through very nicely. I also find that mojitos are better with dark rhum.

Trashy Breakfast Food Gets Seasonal

So I guess that would a 4/5 (for Pop-Tarts)!!! Too bad that can't be specified up there beside the red little dots because it kinda undermines the other 4 star products! But I nonetheless enjoyed the read, love your sense of humour, Mr. Norton!

Best pakaged Mouhamarra

On the Plateau, you can find them at Valmont's. They are packaged in small translucent square shaped plastic containers. They are in the open fridges near dips, feta cheese, etc. I like their falafel and hummus.

Beet Greens and Feta Pasta

Delicious! Couldn't help but add a couple of ingredients, a handful of cherry tomatoes were cooked along with the beet greens, and I also added some dried tomatoes in oil with the cheese.
A great tip for cooking greens is using a non-stick wok. Makes plenty of room to put all the greens at once, you just need to stir for them to be evenly wilted.

Crunchy, Cool-Weather Fare

I'm obsessed these days with this mix:
Paper thin slices of fennel
Red onion
Sliced orange
Feta cheese
Balsamic vinegar
Olive oil
Salt & pepper

Saffron Panna Cotta with Bitter Honey

Suereal, you really have to try with the saffron, it's incredible! But my guess is that cardamom would be great to try. From Québec, I am also a big fan of maple syrup but in this case, the taste of honey with the saffron is a huge winner!

Pho in Montreal: 2009

I'm not an expert but I since I've tasted the Pho at Pho Bac no 1 in Verdun, I don't eat it anywhere else. It's on Wellington on the north side, between 2nd and 3rd aves. The broth is delicious and it's served with basil leaves, lime, hot pepper ans bean sprouts on the side.

Lavender Cookies

Baked a second batch and added some kosher salt, it does add some depth to the recipe. But I made the mistake to refrigerate the dough overnight before rolling it out which made the operation quite difficult the next day.
Thank you for this great recipe!

Tourtiere, a Quebec specialty - Meat Pie (recipe)

Your description makes me think of "ragout de boulettes", a stew of meatballs made in a thick pork gravy, but the word "putsin" with the word "dumpling" makes me think of "poutine râpée", an Acadian recipe made of ground meat stuffed potato dumplings. Does any of those two ring a bell?

Peanut Butter–Chocolate Fudge

I used natural peanut butter, so I added some kosher salt, maybe half a teaspoon. The result tastes great. Of course it's sweet, it's FUDGE!!!

WOW! Amazing!!!! This tastes so good! I put a little less sugar, 4 tsp of brown sugar rather than 6, I guess I could have cut on the granulated sugar also. But this is a hit! Thanks!

Smoothies--the (nearly) universal solution to leftovers

It's not exactly a leftover that I have to suggest, but I want to share that I have been using a lot of different spices in my smoothis lately, and it's delicious! A great combination is frozen mango chunks with fresh ginger and some soy milk. Another is a mix of varied fruits with orange juice, flavoured with powdered cinnamon and cardamom. Mmmmmm!!!

Cold Lentil Salad

I've started sprouting lately, and lentils are my favourite seed to sprout. I steam them, let them cool and then make a salad that looks like this one. I like to put feta cheese in mine as well as halved cherry tomatoes. I love the feta/mint pairing.

Saag Tofu

I used ordinary store-bought tofu for the recipe, so the first time I did it, the big cubes were a bit bland. I did the recipe again with smaller cubes, and I put the ginger at the beginning with the garam masala, for more taste. I love the pairing of tofu and a classic indian dish. Next time, I am tempted to finely chop the spinash to give the dish a creamy texture like the chicken saag at my favourite indian restaurant.
