wooden handle in oven? NY Times cornbread recipe picture last weekend--April 1st

Thanks for reaching out to the NY times directly!
But the pan is Copco (not dansk, as I thought before), like this one--and I don't think the handle comes off or does it? I can't seem to unscrew it, but I'm not trying all that hard because I don't want to somehow ruin it!

Will you be looking for anything specific at yard sales this season?

soooo true, sunshine! Last year, it took me about 6 months to find a replacement for my broken glass vessel for my Bodum. Now that I don't need it, (and before it broke), I see them all of the time!

I look for basically any Swedish/Danish/German etc. kitchen items.

That's exactly what I thought would happen! And no, I don't want it to get scorched!

Thanks everyone for your input. I am looking forward to trying this recipe, in a different pan!

Unfortunately, it doesn't unscrew.

wooden handle in oven? NY Times cornbread recipe picture last weekend--April 1st

There's a delicious-sounding cornbread recipe in the NY Times magazine from last weekend--East Coast Grill Corn Bread.
The picture of the cornbread shows it baked in a vintage Dansk Cast Iron pan with a wooden handle.

I have that exact pan, but never thought I should put it in the oven because of the wooden handle. Am I right? or can I go ahead and use this pan for this recipe??

Thanks!

Asian grocery stores between Sheppard and Finch?

Are there any large-ish Asian grocery stores on Yonge St. between Sheppard and Finch? I need to take the subway, and don't feel like taking a bus anywhere.

Thanks!

Sake Kasu--help!

Does anyone have any recipes, tips etc. using Sake Kasu?
I'm especially interested in dressings and marinades, but anything would be really appreciated.

Thanks!!

The Burger's Priest new location??

Opening today! I'll be there!

2011 Food and Resto CLOSINGS

The Chimichanga at Yonge and Eg. is also closed. Note for rent not paid on the door dated Oct. 25th or so.

2011 Food and Resto CLOSINGS

Is it officially closed? I walked by there yesterday thinking it was closed too, but on the door they have sign saying they are closed for a few days due to water damage. That sign on the door has been there for at least 10 days though. If it is closed, that's insanely fast--it was only open for a few months!!

God I love Highland Farms

I love that Ellesmere Highland Farms too--the mountains of veggies, all of the Italian products, the delicious feta, etc. etc.
But when I go, I like to go across the parking lot to that not-so-attractive strip plaza and pick up the most delicious and cheap Sri Lankan at Hopper Hut. Veggie curry for $2.25, Veggie Kotu Roti for about $5, vegetable or mutton rolls for $1 etc. yum!

Yonge & Lawrence: Menchies going to open

Two gelato places are supposed to be opening up too--there have been signs up all summer for them both, but I'm pretty sure neither have opened yet.

Yonge & Lawrence: Menchies going to open

Everyone will be able to compare Menchies and Yogurty's because I just saw a "coming soon" sign for Yogurty's as well at Yonge & Lawrence!! Almost right across the street from where Menchies is going to be.
Weird that 2 yogurt places and 2 gelato places are opening up in the hood--but all after summer has ended (although it's gorgeous out today!).

Obika Mozzarella Bar - Brookfield Place

I made a reservation a few weeks ago, to celebrate my mother's 75th birthday. I spoke to the reservation woman 3 times, including once specifically telling her we were celebrating a birthday.
When we got there, it wasn't very busy at all. When we asked to see the wine list, the waitresses face went blank...she then said "didn't they tell you when you made the reservation that our liquor license has been suspended for a while?" Argh! Wine is a big part of our dinners, so we had to leave. I couldn't believe it--three conversations and no mention of it!! It was a real bust, since trying to find somewhere to go at 8pm on a Friday isn't easy.
Maybe this is why they haven't been very busy!

Looking for ceramic egg cartons

I just saw them this week at Crate and Barrel at Yorkdale Mall.

Vegetarian foodies in Lisbon...for 8 days.

I'm a vegetarian (no meat/fish, but ok for dairy) who has visited Lisbon at least 10 times--but mostly for only a few days at a time. And I must say, it is pretty difficult to find vegetarian food in Portugal.
That said, every year I look forward to going to the Gulbenkian museum's Modern Art Centre--for the art, and the buffet they serve at lunch (the modern is a separate building from the main one). For about 8 euros, you can choose a plate of 4 or 6 items. Although there are plenty of meat and fish dishes, I can always fill my plate with veggie ones, and they are truly fresh and delicious. They also have yummy massive slices of cake, puddings and fruit. It's also a great atmosphere, filled with hip Portuguese families. There is always a line up on weekend, but it goes by quickly, and there is always somewhere to sit.
Portugal also has the most amazing cheeses! Go to any grocery store and you will find cow, sheep and goat's milk cheeses--the variety is incredible! Around the corner from the Gulbenkian is El Corte Ingles, which has a massive grocery store in the basement with a giant cheese section at very good prices (at least for a Canadian). check it out for sure.
However, I'm sure Vinhotinto75 can suggest a better cheese market...?

2011 Food and Resto CLOSINGS

I saw that too! I feel guilty because the only time I stepped into that store was when they had their two-for-one sale just before Christmas, and I spent about $80. But I never went back!
It seemed like it was run by a nice French family.

What's going into old Joy Cherry space - 3323 Yonge St?

There was supposed to be some pan-Asian restaurant opening in this space, but now it seems like it has gone under before opening! I just noticed recently there is a "For Lease, Restaurant space" sign on the windows.
Anyone have any idea what's going on?

Help! Need to figure out a NYE dinner menu for 8, with no oven!!

My mother (early 70's, yet hip and loves to cook) is having her annual NYE sit-down dinner party (which goes on, on average, until 4am!), but her oven isn't working and she can't get a new one delivered on time. She's at a loss on what to make, and time is ticking away!

Any suggestions would be really appreciated! Normally she would roast a couple of ducks or some Cornish hens, but not this year! She doesn't use a BBQ or a wok--she actually never makes Asian food. French, Italian, Spanish etc. are all good.

Looking forward to hearing from you!!

ISO Vegetarian Tourtiere

I'm searching for a vegetarian tourtiere in TO. I've tried Whole Foods, All the Best, Le Comensal and Big Carrot--nothing!
Help!

Oversize Toblerone...anybody?

Today I saw the 3 ft. long ones at Shoppers on Mt. Pleasant, just south of Eglinton, behind the cash.

Help, I have to eat at The Bottom Line -- what am I in for?

I've only been there once, for a drink, so I can't recommend what to order. But it's actually called
Meating at the Bottom Line. It's the same ppl who owed Meating at Yonge and Eg.

Here's the link:

Chega....Closed or rebranding

I just walked by it and there's a sign in the window that says:
"coming soon...
Burger Cellar
Burger Grill + Wine Bar"

Not sure how you feel, but "wine bars" always make me nervous...

Where to get frisee lettuce?

I've seen it recently at Longo's, Highland Farms and the Loblaws at Yonge north of Lawrence.

Atlantic City food/drink deals on Mondays & Tuesdays?

We're heading to Atlantic City next Monday and Tuesday (June 28th & 29th) from Toronto (via Philly). Does anyone know of any good food/drink deals we would enjoy? Prix Fixe menus, happy hours, etc.
I see that Izakaya has a $7 menu on Mondays.
I'm a vegetarian (no meat/fish, but dairy is ok) but my SO is a full meat and seafood eater. All I really need is one (or two) veg. options.

Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

Cheapest pub with nice TVs on Yonge/Eg area?

Hmmmm, I was going to recommend Cam's. I think they have 3 pretty good TVs, no? And considering it's pretty small, having 3 TVs is good.
AND it's wing night tonight there...my SO thinks they're the best in the city. I'm a veggie, so I can't comment on them.

just bought an old soda siphon from a yard sale...help!

Over the weekend I bought a cool blue metallic soda siphon for $3. I've never used one before, so I have some questions...
1. can I use old co2 cartridges? It came with a box of 10, but 9 of them have already been used, which are obviously garbage. There's one that still has the seal in tact--can I use that one? I have no idea how old it is, but the picture on the box looks pretty 70's-ish
2. The box of cartridges that came with it are some German brand--Berndorf Kayser. I bought some Isi brand ones because they look exactly the same. Should be ok, right?
3. what's the screw at the top for? if I unscrew it, it has a spring attached to it.

There's just something about the CO2 that makes me nervous!!! anything I have to be really careful not to do?

I've looked at a youtube video, so I know to shake it after it's been filled and to use cold water, etc. but I was surprised at how few videos there were on them.

Thanks for any help!

Heading to St. Lawrence Market for the first time...what should I look out for?

No one ever writes about it, but this place also has really yummy pizza slices--thin crust with garlicky tomato sauce--I always just get the plain cheese and pile on the chili flakes.

What is your favorite hard to find candy?

Ipsedixit--Whaaaaat?? Chocolate Bit-o-Honey?? Is that chocolate-covered? Or a chocolate version of the regular Bit? Bit-O-Honey is absolutely impossible to find in Toronto. I'm constantly on the hunt.

Restaurant Suggestions - York Mills/Lawerence/Eg and Yonge area

The Don Mills restaurants aren't near Yonge street, which is part of the original request.
