How Do I Make My Brownies More Over the Top?
I love to use the Baked brownie recipe then make a peanut butter buttercream. Using a biscuit cutter, I make circles and make brownie whoopie pies. Always a hit.
Pumpkin/Lentil Lamb Curry Soup Duo?
Well, that would be the logical solution :) However, if anyone has any experience with soup duos, I'd love to year about the techniques of plating.
Interesting tidbit about the lentils. I will remember that. I am Southern and always eat black-eyed peas on New Year's Day for luck. Between the lentils on NYE and the black-eyed peas I should be covered for 2012 (hopefully). Happy New Year to you.
Pumpkin/Lentil Lamb Curry Soup Duo?
Having people over for a soup night this evening. I have prepared a pumpkin soup and a lentil lamb curry soup. I started thinking that these flavors may pair nicely and thought about giving people the choice of either soup or a combo. I have a cookbook that shows two soups served in one bowl and wonder if that might work. Thoughts on the flavor combo and/or the technique needed to serve them a a duo in one bowl? Thanks.
Turning a cheescake into bars--need the input of experienced bakers.
Thanks for the help everyone. At the last minute I decided to go for a recipe designed to be served as bars. (I was taking these to a shower and figured I should save the experiments for my own indulgences.) I made the recipe found at the link below and they were a huge hit. I am not one to bake with any sort of mix, but my 10-month old was not cooperating so I went for the path of least resistance. Very rich, so I advise cuting them into tiny bite-size squares.

Does this mean they come out similar to little mini cheesecakes? I have never tried this method, but is sounds kinda cool.

Thank you. I will make them on Saturday and let you know how it goes. If the recipe turns out, I can imagine it will become a regular in my kitchen.

A friend once made a fantastic praline/brulee cheesecake and I want to recreate the flavors in bar form. The cheescake version was basically a graham cracker crust, topped with a caramel/pecan mixture, layered with cheesecake filling, and then finished with torched sugar (a la a creme brulee).
This is what she made:

Would it work for me to adapt a basic cheesecake bar recipe, but add the desired additional layers? I am afraid the added elements may make the bars to moist or make them collapse.
Thanks in advance.
Caterer or Private Chef for Small Brunch
I am hosting a 12-person brunch in my home and I, unfortunately, will not have the time to cook for it. The guest of honor is an expecting mother and pescetarian. I called Fete Accompli, but she is unable to take the job. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good caterer or personal chef?
Gourmet Vegetarian Tacos - Tonight
I like the veggie tacos at Takoba. They put chipoltle mayo and cubed, roasted sweet potatoes on theirs (along with squash, corn, poblanos, and zucchini). I never had sweet potatoes on tacos before and I really like the sweet element mixed with the heat of the chiles.
Baguette et Chocolat open?
The website indicates they are open Tuesday through Friday 6:30 to 6:00; Saturday 7:00 to 4:00; and Sunday 8 to 2. Closed Monday
Take my brunch...please
Glad the pomengranate mimosas worked out! I love them, as well.
Please rate restaurants for me and give suggestions!
Uchi (love sashimi, but want really fresh fish, is this the right place)?
Yes. Go. You will not be disappointed.
Vespaio
I actually prefer the more casual Enotecca next door, but both are great. If you go to Enotecca, get the suppli.
Jeffrey's
Never been
Maria's Xpress Tacos
It is okay, but nothing special. There are better tacos to be had (Habenero cafe, Juan in a Million)
Fonda San Miguel
Last time I ate here it was not very good.
I would recommend considering Hudson'd On the Bend. It and Uchi are my two favorite upscale places in Austin. Lots of people also recommend Parkside, but I have not been.

Indoor temperatures in Austin restaurants
I am one of those people who is always cold and I take a sweater, jacket, etc..everywhere I go. However, the OP states that the AC was on when the outside temp was in the 40's. That is too much.
What Flavor Ice Cream to Pair with a Cake
I like the lemon idea or what about a honey-lavender?
Urgently need recommendations for restaurant gift certificate
I would suggest Hudson's on the Bend, which IMO is one of the top restaurants in Austin. It is romantic, has a great winde list, and a lovely garden area. Check out their menu online:

Take my brunch...please
I got that one as a holiday gift this year. A friend gave me the recipe and all the ingredients to make the drink. Such a nice idea!

Another option for drinks:
Pomengranate Mimosa
2 cups chilled pomegranate juice
1 cup chilled fresh orange juice
1/2 cup orange-flavored liqueur (preferably Cointreau)
1 (750-ml) bottle well-chilled Cava or demi-sec Champagne
Lost carrot cake recipe- Help!
I know you don't think it was a cooking light recipe, but this one from Jan 2008 seems to meet some of the criteria.

What's your 'go-to' vegetarian main dish?
Ina Garten's mushroom lasagna is delicous and what I often serve my vegetarian guests

Chocolate Chip Cookies (NYT 7/09/08)
This is my standard cookie recipe and I swap out the chocolate to suit my cravings (milk chocolate, toffee bits, whatever). I also change the size of the cookie depending on my needs. I like to bake them as needed, and store the dough in the fridge. It holds up very well for up to a week.
Usually, I turn the oven on to preheat while we eat dinner and then pop a few cookies in afterwards. Love the soft texture of the inside.

Split white hoagie roll
Place brie on one side, and stick under broiler to melt/toast
Spread one side of bread with cranberry, one with mayo
Top with turkey.
I look forward to this sandwich all year round.

None of my go-to recipes meet the criteria
Thanks for all these wonderful suggestions. Right now I am leaning towards a salad (dressing on the side), cookies and brownies for dessert, a loaf of crusty bread and that lamb and orzo dish.
I will keep these other recipes in mind for when we have this particular couple over for dinner!
HEB Al Pastor
Thanks for the suggestion rudeboy. I'll pick some up when I am grocery shopping tomorrow.
BTW- Love those tortillas. They remain my favorite grocery store find in the last year. Going to heat one up right now....

Thanks MMRuth for the suggestion.
However, you reminded me that I forgot the last criteria...no alcohol (even cooked).
Corndog and/or hand battered onion ring recipes/suggestions
If you feel adventurous and want to experiment try making a shrimp corndog.
Take a large raw shrimp, coat as you would a corndog and deep fry. On the side, mix some stone ground mustard with blackberry preserves.
I have not made these, only eaten them. Besides a Flethcer's corn dog at the Texas State Fair this is the only kind I'll eat.
Healthful Home-Cooking
As a general source, I find Cooking Light's recipes to be wonderful. Their website has a nice serach engine and I have rarely been disappointed in the recipes showing the highest ratings.
