have a craving for a lemon cupcake
well i tried jack's lemon from sugar mama's, but i was disappointed, sadly. was really hoping for a lighter crumb and less lemony flavor! but i was fairly warned! I do love their other cupcakes though--like the pineapple upside down cake! YUM
have a craving for a lemon cupcake
just had my husband bring me back the best lemon cupcake w/ lemon buttercream frosting from seattle's "cupcake royale" shop.
any recs for a lemon cupcake in austin? i don't mind if it's combined w/ coconut...
don't want it too lemony
had one at polka dots--good but too much frosting and too lemony
any recs would be appreciated
thx
Family/Music/Good Food Saturday night - possible
you probably know about this but central market on lamar is good. fun to dance there
bday celebration for group of 20
we have a large-ish group for a weeknight celebration. we don't necessarily need to have dinner but want good food (apps or dinner) and enough standing room for everyone to mingle
thought of vivo's and paggi house so far. any other recommendations??
thanks
Alamo Food & Film Event
the food at events is usu really good, better than regular nights
Substitute for Trader Joe's in Austin?
all the cm lovers here may not like what i have to say here, but trader joe's is a lot better than cm (central market); produce is not that great at central market , although you do get a lot of choices. the prepared foods are full of fillers/artificial flavors, colors/etc... if you print out the labels, you'll see a very long list of ingredients for , say, even potato leek soup. prepared foods are wholer and more natural at whole foods or wheatsville.
i'm waiting for the day trader joe's comes to austin.....

VitaMix Blender, is it worth it?
has anyone using a vitamix made small amounts of chutneys? the reps say the vitamix can blend amts less than 5 oz! i have a hard time believing that! i'm looking for a blender that can say make a chutney out of peanuts and cilantro, but a bunch of cilantro really only makes about 1 cup. pls help me decide!
Max's Wine Dive for a group dinner?
well it literallly just opened this week; we're going to check it out tonight. but i love vivo's for texmex and mostly atmosphere when it's a party or a fun bunch of people. great mex martini's and puffy tacos/enchiladas are pretty good too.
Dai Due
we've done a vegetarian dinner at a pprivate residence---it was awesome! so fun (we went w/ 4 friends); great experience....
Allergic to Gluten - where to eat?
there are certain south indian items on the menu at madras pavilion which should be gluten free; dosa/idli etc... but you'll have to double check with the cooks--sometimes asafetida is a spice used in sambhaar (lentil soup) that has wheat flour in it. but all the other ingredients in dosa/idli/sambhaar/chutneys are gf!
cooking class as a gift
oops sorry, i meant and thought that i had posted this on the dallas board! i need a class in dallas not austin! i'll re-post!
cooking class as a gift
hi i'm from austin and looking to take a cooking class with my sister for her bday gift.
any places besides central market and viking that i should know about?
thanks!
strawberry cake?
Hi! Just wanting to see if anyone has recommendations for a strawberry cake for my daughter's 4 year birthday? The request is that it be a PINK cake with or without whole strawberries in it! I believe Lucy's does one and we have gotten the Gateau Marisa from Upper Crust many times, but this year, she wants the cake to be pink. If I can't find one, I might have to make it! AAAGH!
Cheap, hidden ethnic (or not) eats?
chhole/batura at swad; banh mi sandwiches, falafels at sarah's
best Indian food
sorry, i meant london sizzler in houston! wish there was one in austin!!
best Indian food
if u r talking about indian restaurants in austin, you have got to have London Sizzler!!!!!!!!
the cookie lounge?
unfortunately, "zero transfats per serving" doesn't mean much. what is a serving? on packaging these days, a serving is quite small, but i would assume a serving to them is one whole cookie. anyway, the current fda guidelines i believe only require that a certain amt of transfats be reported. but as we all know, ANY transfats are bad...worse than saturated fats. but i guess you all are all right, the cookie price is a bit much. but i think i will continuing paying it. P.S. last i checked, an entire can of CRISCO even says no trans fats per serving. How is that possible?? i suppose it's fully hydrogenated instead of partially hydrogenated?
Fun Restaurant
vivo's in east austin is ALWAAYS fun with a large group. u can be loud, have good enchiladas and salsa, and sit indoors or out and have great drinks. mex martinis are good but i tried the tamarind margarita and it was really good!
the cookie lounge?
well, i just had cookies from them tonight! and i had the chef's special (70% cocoa chocolate chips and walnuts). they were awesome. exactly like i make the homemade ones at home except i make them with regular semisweet chocolate chips, which make a sweeter cookie. but the cookies were the perfect texture and size and they were warm too. they were slightly crispy on the outside and soft chewy on the inside. the chips were huge though. and the cookie was overall not that sweet b/c of the 70% chips. good stuff. not going back to tiffs again (nothing bad, just now there is a choice that is more all natural w/o transfats
the cookie lounge?
any thoughts on this new cookie delivery place? although i indulge on tiff's treats once in a while, i believe that they don't use real butter in their cookies (possibly some sort of margarine) , at least that's what they said when i called them once about a year ago. I haven't tried cookie lounge but i am eager to!
Cake
i was looking for 2 chocolate cakes for hubby's bday and had to get something made within 48hrs (such a procrastinator i am!). anyway, got my neighborhood bakery's chocolate italian cream cake (upper crust bakery) and chez zee's maida cake.
i always love uppercrust cakes and this one was really good too. but i have to say the guests were raving about the maida cake. that cake has been reviewed on chowhound before which is why i decided to get it anyway...very light/fluffy/yum!
Soups in Austin
upper crust bakery has a good cheese soup (sounds gross , but it's good! has shredded carrot in it ) ez's across from central mkt has a great chk tortilla soup--way better than cm's. also uppercrust has a good lentil soup. my kids love it.
La Cocina de Consuelo: not very friendly but food good
i agree--tamale house rocks! no limit on the salsa and ridiculously cheap!
La Cocina de Consuelo: not very friendly but food good
too bad that people who just open a business don't have the greatest customer service! i never understand that! the tacos (i always get them on corn) are yummy and they actually have different ingredients like nopalitos; but for a breakfast taco it's a bit pricy
Now Open - Sago (In the Triangle)
we live in the neighborhood. too bad we had the WORST SMELLYIST fish tacos we've ever had. we likely won't go back, even to try other food!
Best "fast" food in Central/South Austin?
i live off of 45th/lamar: here are a few places: ez's, phoenicia's deli, sarah's mediterranean market, places at the new triangle such as mandola's, and the aussie pie place on guadalupe (good fast savory pies)
FUN atmosphere and good food
Hi chowhounders. I need suggestions for a FUN place with great food, not necessarily TexMex though! We have a bunch of friends coming from out of town and we'd like a place with a fun cool atmosphere and not too trendy. Similar places we've gone to before included Vivo's, Ararat, Trudy's. But we need something new. Any suggestions??
Indian Mangoes???
you can get them at mgm indian food store on burnet. but yes the season is ending. i'm lucky , my mom brings 'em forme from htown! of course i forget the variety name
