McMillan's Bakery on Haddon Ave. in New Jersey has the Best Cream Donuts I have tasted

I live a few towns away from McMillans and their cream donuts are really the best. Now the other bakery products...I do like the mini sticky buns and the mini danish. The cakes and cookies are decent, but nothing to go out of your way for. Their muffins are just OK, IMO. My mom says the cream donuts are worth killing for, and she is an expert!

BBQ classes in NJ

My sister would love to give her husband some classes/workshop on BBQ. The old fashioned kind (Texas or NC), and also the basic grilling type. BIL loves real BBQ and has commented on how he would love to take classes. He also could use some lessons on the proper way to cook things on the grill! He literally can't stop touching the steaks/burgers and is constantly moving them, never allowing them to get a crust. We end up with steamed food, rather than grilled meats. He's a great guy; just could use a little help from a master griller/cook. Any ideas? Jersey into Philly area would be preferred.
Thanks

Napoleon's Creampuffery: Lindenwold

For several years, I have been purchasing the most fabulous creampuffs from Napoleon's Creampuffery. It's in an out of the way location in dismal Lindenwold; but don't let that stop you. These are so delicious, it's worth the trip out of the way. The creampuffs are filled as you wait (or you can preorder), and dusted with powdered sugar. They always have vanilla, chocolate and pistachio; and usually a an additional flavor or two of the day. The puff itself is light as air, and the pistachio is out of this world. Full of flavor and not overly sweet, with the tiniest bits of pistachio here and there. The chocolate is a second favorite, again not overly sweet. So fabulous it's hard to leave the parking lot without wanting to bite into one. (it's a two biter kind of thing!)
They sell a few other things, like carrot cake, which I haven't tried. The place is teeny tiny; with friendly service I have seen people purchasing the freshly made puff wmpty shells, which they fill at home with chicken salad, etc.
If you are ever in the area, it's just up the road from La Esperanza Mexican Food, and about 2 miles away from the Ritz Movie Theater in Voorhees. You won't be sorry!

Can't find my saved recipes or saved threads???

thank you. I did this and did find what I was looking for. I don't remember it being this difficult in the past, and have been a CH member for some time...

Can't find my saved recipes or saved threads???

Went back today to look for my saved recipes and threads (that I saved for multiple recipe ideas). Could bring up the saved recipes once, but never the saved threads (or topics). What gives? Is there a new way to do this?

boost! where?

I was just in Riverside last week and stopped at the Seabras grocery store. Chock full of Portugese and Brazilian products, produce, sausage, etc. They also carry Boost in a few different sizes.

baby shower Brick area need suggestions

Kathy: sorry to hear this. Do yourself a favor and eat before you go...you can thank me later for this tip! Great view because of the ocean, but the food is...not so good. Unfortunately, with your budget, there isn't much of a choice in the area. Have fun anyway!

baby shower Brick area need suggestions

My sister had my niece;s Communion party at VV and was very good. In fact, we just ate there last week (bifrthday party). You might want to try Andy's in Sea Girt. It's just in a strip shopping center with little atmosphere, but the food is very good. BYOB They have a back dining room that has been recently redone, but the front of the place is a pizza parlor. My parents said Rellas is not good, and be glad the Lobster Shanty is taken the day you were looking for. I seriously had one of the worst meals of my life at that filthy place. BTW the people who own VV also have another restaurant in Forked River that is equally good, I'll post the link below, (Il Giardino)

You might also want to check out Simkos in Brielle or Brick. I know they host lots of parties there. Food is decent, though not what I would consider excellent. It should meet your budget though.

Gravy to go with Chicken Croquettes?

Thank you both. I am out of my homemade chicken stock right now, so will resort to using broth and maybe a bit of wine to make my gravy. They both like shallots and mushrooms, so that is also a good idea for an addition. Thanks!

Gravy to go with Chicken Croquettes?

Purchased some freshly made chicken croquettes at an excellent German butcher shop today for my elderly parents. They love them! The butcher did not sell chicken gravy and I'm wondering if anyone has an easy and delicious recipe for a nice gravy to go with them. My parents are not chowhounds, so the simpler the better. My mom also does not care for cream based sauces (for some strange reason). Any ideas?
Thanks

Brick: where's the 'good' stuff??

seddon you gave me a laugh!! Been to Harrigans and my parents do like it. Also, was forced:-)) to make numerous trips to the liquor store by the Shop Rite in Manasquan to restore my sanity. Decent selection. Tried Mossutos for some rather expensive salads that were tasty, but overpriced. Also has some excellent bread sticks that I purchased there. In addition, their cookies were delicious,. Service is rather slow and a bit disorganized, but I'd still go back for the cookies.

Pho Xinh (So Jersey)?

Bunch of new Vietnamese places in S Jersey these days. Pho Garden on Kings Hwy in CH opened recently had I've been there several times. Beef pho is pretty good, but I think the spring rolls from Pho Eden are better. Also noticed a new Pho restaurant on Route 38 in Mt. Laurel (shopping center with Aldi).

Restaurants/pubs in/near Burlington?

Note: I have not been there personally, but a friend really likes the Towne Tavern at Cafe Madison. It's only a few miles south of Burlington.

Traditional Irish Breakfast??

St Stephens Green in Spring Lake offers the traditional Irish breakfast year round. It's quite charming inside and might make a nice day trip for you.

Brick: where's the 'good' stuff??

I did drive by and wonder about Sentosa. It looks pretty beat, but then I am always one to try the out of the way place at least once. My parents, not so much! My mom does not like seafood, so we have to try places that also offer non seafood options. We're regulars at Simkos, VV, St Stephens Green, Forte, Rods, Had one of the worst meals of my life at Lobster Shanty, so won;t be visiting that hellhole again. I'm curious about the mexican places you mention. There are a few places on 71 that I wanted to try, but my parents think they look 'scary'!

I guess my point was, that since Brick is such a big town, I expected to see more of a variety of mom and pop options there. My parents have been in Manasquan for 11 years now, and things have improved as far as the food sceen goes, but there is still a long way to go. Do consider yourselves fortunate to have such good fresh seafood stores and options right in your backyard.

Brick: where's the 'good' stuff??

One of the things I find so facinating about this area is that with the proliferation of senior housing and residents, services geared toward them are non existent. My parents live in a gated over 55 community across from the aforementioned Shop Rite. Can you believe that Shop Rite does not deliver groceries? Neither does the one in Brick. And the Shop Rite is the most crowded grocery store I have ever seen; with a parking lot that is beyond scary with senior drivers.
Where I live, I can get delivery from Shop Rite, Acme, Genardis, etc. You would think a light bulb would go off saying 'hmmmm; captive audience here, lets deliver'. I've only found a few restaurants that deliver; like two. I can get pretty much anything delivered to my house if I so choose. Why not here? I did order from Pea Pod (Stop and Shop) for grocery delivery this weekend; which worked out fine for my parents. There's a business opportunity here for the right people and services.

Brick: where's the 'good' stuff??

I'm a huge fan of Point Lobster and have been going there for years. I'll be the first to say that PL beats our fish store in Haddonfield, or anything Wegmans or WF has to offer. I haven't been to Mossutos, but have driven by it often on the way to one of my parents doctors appts:-(

Brick: where's the 'good' stuff??

My mom LOOVES Surf Taco, and I have been picking up tacos for her there regularly. I find it kind of expensive !for what it is. I got a fish taco the other night and it was very 'fishy'! I do like their chips, though. I will check out the Fins restaurant since my mother likes Mexican. I have to say; I've not been having fun in this neck of the woods. My mom was in the hospital over a week in Jan, now my dad is in the hospital and I have to stay with mom so she doesn't fall. I've been dealing with no Wegmans, or Whole Food, no Vietnamese or other ethnic nearby to their house. Can't wait to get home!

Brick: where's the 'good' stuff??

Oh....I was sooooo afraid of that. What is up with those roads that go nowhere? Several times I tried to make u turns, by following the signs....and ending up in a shopping center parking lot where the signs ended. Mishmash of roads, and half empty ugly shopping centers. It's like being sent to hell. ugh.

Brick: where's the 'good' stuff??

Due to a family emergency, I have been staying with my parents in Manasquan. They live close to Brick, and my dad is in the hospital there and will be in rehab. I've been driving around trying to find decent food. Seems like Brick is full of chain restaurants, tatoo parlors and pizza joints. Is there anything else? Tried Mattinas bakery; it's just OK. Really like Villa Vittoria, but am tired of Italian. Was driving around looking for Vietnamese the other day, and it's not to be had in that area is it? What about Greek? How is the Brick 'Farmers Market'? The entire area seems void of anything ethnic other than Italian. Help; need suggestions.

Moe's Southwest Grill coming to Marlboro

So sorry to hear this. I made the mistake of going to one in Deptford and it was terrible. Rude service, disorganized and dirty. Thought it might be an alternative to a Baja Fresh, but not even close...and I'm not saying Baja Fresh is the best, but at least the food is fresh, and the two locations I have been to have been very clean. My best advice, stay away from Moe's...

Asking for updated info on Korean (with BBQ) in Ocean/Monmouth Counties / Vietnamese also

Quine: I frequent Pho Eden regularly, but here are a few more suggestions for Vietnamese in the Cherry Hill area.
Pho 38 Pennsauken
http://www.pho-38.com/
Pho Barclay in the Barclay Farms shopping center on 70 in CH (skip the Asian market in this center; not nearly as good as HMart)
http://phobarclay.com/?cat=6
Pho Garden on Kings Hwy in Cherry Hill (try the Bagels from Bagel Spot in that center: excellent)
http://maps.google.com/maps/place?rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&oe=&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=pho+garden+cherry+hill&fb=1&gl=us&hq=pho+garden&hnear=0x89c6cb660be23e95:0x35db09ecd8adbdc0,Cherry+Hill,+NJ&cid=9538212878682167000
Pho So 1 on 38 in Cherry Hill (about 1/2 mile east of the CH Mall)
http://maps.google.com/maps/place?rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&oe=&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=pho+so+1+cherry+hill+new+jersey&fb=1&gl=us&hq=pho+so+1&hnear=0x89c6cb660be23e95:0x35db09ecd8adbdc0,Cherry+Hill,+NJ&cid=16056472969222558145

From the list, I think the Pho from Pho Barclay, Pho Garden and Pho 38 are really good. Spring rolls from Pho Eden are absolutely the best in the area, as well as their rice and vermicelli dishes. Very nice atmosphere at Pho Barclay, Pho Garden, and Pho 38. Service good at all, but a little rough at Pho so1.
I'm no expert on Korean, but people really seem to like Sammy Chon's on Route 70 In CH.

Funniest Thing a Server Said to You

Two college friends and I went to an Italian restaurant for dinner. None of us had ever been there, so we really did not know what to expect. We had our menus and listened while the waitress reviewed the nights dinner specials for some diners a few tables away from us. Finally she came to the last special. It was 'Shrimp Fra Di Vulva', (aka Shrimp Fra Diavolo). Asked by the folks at the table to repeat it, she said Fra Di Vulva at least two more times. My girlfriends and I just about wet our pants laughing. We could not even bear to look at each other. Naturally, we asked her the what the specials were when she came to our table and she told us again about the 'Vulva' special. We couldn't breathe.

We all still snort about this story when ever it's mentioned and routinely ask each other whether how we like our vulvas prepared, what's the special vulva of the day, and comment how we'd like a side of vulva to go with our steak.

Oh, and we all went to an all women's Catholic college together, which makes this story even funnier (to us at least).

Best bakery in South Jersey?

Agree about McMillans for donuts....they are the best around. But their cookies are terrible, and the muffins just so so. The danish and sticky buns are also excellent. Bit of a ride if you are from Burlington County, though.

Best bakery in South Jersey?

Not sure where you are in Burlington, but here are a few suggestions:
In Westhampton there is Old World Bakery and Cafe. They offer cakes and bread. Be prepared for rude service, fyi. But the cakes are really excellent, but fancy. Not sure about a birthday cake from here, since we're never had one.
http://www.theoldeworldbakery.com/
In Burlington there is an old fashioned bakery with very good breakfast items (danish, muffins, etc). It sells a full selection of cakes as well, and it not a 'fancy' type bakery, but a full service bakery with a wide selection. Once again, don't know specifically about the birthday cakes, but I have seen people getting them and they look really nice.
http://www.jbbakery.com/

LM Bakery in Delran is out of the way, and offers a smaller selection. Their cupcakes are very good and I always see lots of people picking up birthday cakes. PS, the donuts are excellent here, and I know they use real butter in the cookies.

Meeting for dinner around exit 3/4 turnpike

You're welcome. I didn't suggest anything off of exit 3, as it gets extremely congested along the pike there, and it's only a 2 lane road to deal with all that traffic. Not very many good options off that exit either.

Roasted Green Chiles

well, that is good to know (Target)

Roasted Green Chiles

Produce Junction regularly has poblano chilis and I have seen the Hatch chilis from time to time. You can always roast them yourself (easy to do), plus they will be fresh. And the OP is right, you can find roasted chilies in most of the corner Mexican stores.

Japanese in Manasquan/Wall/Brick?

Thanks, all. I think Shogun is a bit too trendy for my parents. We have a coupon from that place on 71 in SLH, but my parents tell me it's been dozens of different places over the years (a bit scary in that respect!). I think we will give the place in Brick a try, as I can get all of the basic Japanese items there that I know they will like.

Japanese in Manasquan/Wall/Brick?

Looking for decent Japanese in this area. Really not looking for sushi, just the basic tempura/noodles/teriyaki for my unadventerous elderly parents. Thanks
