Oh, really not trying to rub it in, but I didn't expect to get one. We are very excited. Thanks for the wine recommendations. Riesling will probably be our choice.

Got the thread for the reservation lottery and won. I am very excited. Any suggestions other than try to get everything on the menu?

The Obama caravan at Roscoe's for a little snack...

While Pann's is good, Roscoe's is an institution. With so many references in popular culture, it's a no brainer. I actually like the chicken and the waffles. Plus, the one near the airport - on Manchester, is still getting it's cooking legs. I like to take visitors to Roscoe's - especially because it's usually quick, the food hot and the crowd enjoyable.

Anyone Tried the Campanile burger?

Thanks so much. We had to cancel and will reschedule, but will be heading to BOA for their yummy NY strip instead!

Anyone Tried the Campanile burger?

I've been offered the choice of two burgers - Umami or Campanile and I was wondering if anyone has tried the Campanile version? I am a big fan of Umami's different versions and know that will be fine, but if Campanile has a good one, I want to at least try it. I don't recall seeing one on their menu, but then again, it's not the place that I think screams, "burger"

Looks like a Kogi truck, but it's not...

Turbans & Cowboys @ the El Rey. The burritos and tacos are very good; skip the fries.

Umami Burger: emperor's new clothes?

I just don't taste it at all. Way better burgers out there than FO, IMO. As a matter of fact, I prefer the burger from Callendar's to FO, it's cheaper and comes with fries and an apple!

Umami Burger: emperor's new clothes?

Truly, the FO burger is lame at best. It' really doesn't deserve to be in the same category of other really good burgers in LA. I had one (finally) this weekend. And to say that I was underwhelmed is putting it mildly. It's a nice place, but it's a BAR people. The food is pedestrian at best. IMHO, It's serviceable, but not worth the money or the accolades accorded it on this board and others. After she read my disappointment, my GF wrote and said I should have talked to her first. She said when she used to go FO, she'd order drinks and then order slices of pizzas from Louise's. Oh, SNAP. If that isn't a put down of the highest order, I don't know what it is.

Umami, on the other hand is pure bliss for me. I'm talking the burger - not the fries, cause frankly, the best fries in town are at Mariposa in Neiman Marcus (truffle, oh yeah baby!) and not at hamburger joints.

My fave is the middle east burger ($9), but all the others are $8 and $9 except the truffle burger. I love the joint and tell everyone I know, if they want a darn good burger, try Umami.

Umami Burger: Two Visits

I was thinking it was possible to change my mind on Umami today. But, alas, it was not to be. I've been on a bit of a burger tear lately and while I have not yet tried Lucky's I have hit the hot ones:

Umami
8oz
25 degrees
The Counter
Father's Office

Also BLT Burger in Vegas - that would be #2 on the list. Taste for taste, Umami is the best. The bun, the meat, all good. The only thing I would change is the size. I'd make it bigger. The middle east burger is amazing; I dream about it. Today, I finally tried the fabled Father's Office and boy, was I not impressed. We tried the lamb & the burger. First, they brought the lamb out a good 7 minutes before the burger (that was kind of weird) and once there, I was not impressed. The meat was over done, not seasoned very well and the accompaniments were okay at best. I really don't see the fuss at all. The lamb was really poor; even the pickled cucumbers were just fair. Umami, I can't complain about at all. I adore all four of the burgers I've tried (middle east, classic, pork & umami). I plan on taking everyone I know there. I hope it stays around.

Sunday Brunch for Foodies Visiting

My favorite brunch place, hands down is Gordon Ramsay at the London. It's a beautiful space and the bubbly is Moet Chandon. I can't wait to go back. Highly recommended. Not a big fan of BLD and haven't been to Ortolan (want to try that), but trust me on this one.

Who's still doing great weekend brunch these days?

Gal pals and I went to the inaugural brunch at Gordon Ramsay and I must say, it was spectacular. Three courses with one glass of champagne (Moet) for $40 or $60 for free flowing. I had the corned beef hash that was very untraditional and tasty, the linguine carbonara and mixed fruit tart. All were super yummy. I'm a big fan of their trout, which one of my companions got (I took more than a few bites) and the other got the burger (yum).

GR is my favorite place now that Bastide is gone and I want everyone to try it out, so I know it won't go anywhere.

BTW, had lunch there Thursday and saw Zachary Quinto (Sylar) of Heroes.

Manzke's Bastide vs Shoemaker's Bastide...Has Anyone Been to Both?

I have been to Manzke's kitchen twice and Shoemaker's three times. Let me say this - I look forward to going wherever Manzke hangs his apron. I will go back to Bastide, but probably only for lunch, where I think the value is exceptional ($40 + tax, + grat). Plus, the patio is gorgeous in the summertime. I have found the service to always be excellent and they know me by sight. I've yet to have a meal in LA that has beaten the two Manzke meals I had though....

Does anyone know where Walter Manzke landed?

Just curious - had such fabulous meals at Bastide while he was there - does anyone have any idea where he's cooking these days?

Thanks!

Any decent happy hours in Miracle Mile/WeHo?

Thanks - that's definately a thought. I was also contemplating The Village Idiot with dinner at Table 8 afterwards.

Any decent happy hours in Miracle Mile/WeHo?

Gal pal and I are looking to go somewhere fun with decent food and drinks right after work today. We are in the Miracle Mile area, so WeHo, Hollywood, KTown all good areas. Since the speed dating thingee we planned for has been cancelled - strong drinks and good looking guys would be the first order of things.

Coconut Cream Pie or Coconut Layer Cake in LA?

For old fashioned coconut cake, I still haven't found anyone who beats 27th Street Bakery. That cake is awesome!

Where can I find the best fried chicken?

- there is a Golden Bird at the Baldwin Hills mall, in the back
- The Bird on Slauson & West Blvd
- Pollo Campero, Slauson & Western and near the Costco on Century (not far from Porky's)
- Honey Kettle in Culver City

I like Porky's baked beans - killer!

Mayday! Need Good, Casual Date Restaurant

I've not heard of Cliff's Edge or Dusty's; but then, I don't live in that part of town. Both sound like contenders. Any recs in the Hollywood area? We really can go anywhere that's not deep WLA.

Mayday! Need Good, Casual Date Restaurant

Looking for a casual, but nice restaurant, preferably with mellow music so we can hear each other talk in the Silverlake/Los Feliz/Hollywood area - or even anywhere else in metro LA for an early dinner Saturday night.

It's a first date, so we don't want it to be expensive - +$35 pp, but would like to have a nice ambience.

Much appreciated!

Pre-dinner w/view this evening?

Our from LA party is going to EMP tonight for a moderately late dinner; we' re looking for a very nice place with a view to do appetizers and drinks before dinner - say around 7pm - any suggestions. High price point preferred.

Thanks!

taking HUGE step, REALLY need help from fellow hounders...

Ah, the price is more than fair, IMO. I generally go for lunch though - it's $32. The quality of the sides and salad bar puts it far above the other brazilian places.

I wasn't really planning on going to Shake Shack -- dunno, a hamburger just doesn't motivate me, like say a bagel or pizza or even cupcakes. Dunno why.

Reservations for late July in NYC

I was thinking Balthazar for lunch or breakfast -- the drawback was that they don't do reservations on Open Table and for an out of stater, calling is a bit too much. I think I'll keep Tabla for lunch - if only because of the convention, there are quite a bit of night time events that I'll be attending and won't always be able to keep reservations. Thursday & Friday are the for sure keeps because they're before the convention. I'm not giving up Gotham or Veritas though...
