Wedding rehearsal dinner for 60 - downtown DTW

Traffic Jam? Perfect location and appropriate (in my opinion :) for a rehearsal dinner. Looks like they can accommodate a party that size well within the budget you note. http://www.trafficjamdetroit.com/menu...

Pastitsio in the Dearborn area

I know that Gus and Us, at the SE corner of Outer Drive and Southfield, has it, and it looked really good as I watched a server carry it to another table! I can't vouch for whether it actually is good. This restaurant is in Allen Park, but close enough to Dearborn. Used to be called Opa! Opa! but recently remodeled and reopened; not sure if it's the same owners, but essentially the same Greek favorites and usual Coney Island fare, in addition to broasted chicken (wonderful) and other American favorites.

DTW: Poutine without leaving the US?

NOTE: Just saw Coney's post; sorry. But I'll leave the links for reference in case anyone can use them.

I think poutine is becoming a trend in area resturants, based on what I've read recently.

Mercury Burger Bar and Green Dot Stables, both in Detroit's Corktown neighborhood, come to mind.

heading to Detroit

I definitely second the Steve and Rocky's recommendation. Classic but inventive. Very enjoyable.

cheap-ish restaurant near Detroit Country Day in Farmington Hills (DTW)

Buddy's on Northwestern. Cheap-ish, vegetarian options (if you're not looking for anything exotic), nice atmosphere, convenient to DCD, consistently good pizza and salad.

Mom's Birthday Restaurant Recommendation [DTW]

I would suggest the Holly Hotel. But that doesn't give an idea/impression of Detroit. Nor is it in your desired area. But it fits the bill, otherwise! It's just a comfortable place with excellent food; feels fancy and special, but not stuffy. What about Beverly Hills Grill?

Tashmoo Biergarten = Love [DTW]

Great review, berkleybabe. Indeed, Sunday was perfect weather for a biergarten experience.

NOT to confuse matters further, but I'm pretty certain the Beirgarten in Dearborn does not serve outdoors. If I'm wrong, my apologies.

Ollie's Lebanese - new location in Sterling Hts. [DTW]

The other location is in Dearborn at Ford and Mercury, SE corner. I've yet to try it, as well. Glad to hear good reviews.

The Best Coney in Detroit area

I've been curious about this, too. (The Chicago dog, that is.) Sonic isn't convenient for me, and with a 2-year-old in tow I don't see sitting in the car to try it, but I'd take one for the team if I could! Come on, Spring!

Best Cake in the Metro Detroit Area!

I have to admit that I'm not much an icing fan myself; it's all about the cake for me. I did select this bakery for my wedding cake based on the cake and the icing, though, as I don't find it to be too sugary.
Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Foods that you are embarrassed to tell people you actually eat (a.k.a. foods you only eat when alone).

I've never thought to eat them that way!
As an after-school snack we used to mix Rice Krispies, Chex, and Corn Flakes and mix them with melted butter. Haven't done that in years. Yum.
The butter on knife sounds more efficient for getting the tiny rice cereal, though.

Most Mouth Watering Scenes in Film

I adore the role of food in "The Four Seasons" (Alan Alda, Carol Burnett et al.) The "Spring" segment of the movie, where the men cook the Chinese dinner, and the discussion that follows the next day in the rowboat ("a warm antipasti over a bed of Florentine spinach"), the giant bowl of baked beans, the clams casino, the hot fudge sundaes, the big, crusty loaf of French bread...I'm probably alone in this, but it always gave me such a warm feeling about food.

Hahaha! His eating in that movie disgusts me. The food looks good, until he talks while chewing it.

Best Cake in the Metro Detroit Area!

We order special occasion cakes from Iversen's Bakery in Dearborn. Never been disappointed. My wedding cake was tiers of chocolate, lemon, and spice cake, and everyone raved.

I've heard wonderful things about the baked goods at Richter's Chalet in Dearborn, as well. It's a German restaurant, but its dessert menu is broad. I sampled my dad's carrot cake with pineapple between the layers and it was divine.

Miller's Burgers - Really? [Dearborn MI]

Because it's "no frills," not because of the burger. And, can we all just admit that Miller's has a rep, regardless of how good their food is? This is why it keeps coming up. Is there a "Board of Fame" where we retire a resto because it's been discussed to greasy death?

Miller's Burgers - Really? [Dearborn MI]

Have you been to Millers in the past few years? You are not speaking of the Millers that exists today. I order my burger medium and receive it well every time. The buns are from Kroger.
I go there to appease my inlaws and for the pickles and raw onions. Oh! And they have Squirt.

Soup, Chili and other great bowls of joy in SE Michigan

I'm pretty picky about clam chowder, and was happy to enjoy a really good bowl at Wheat and Rye (Allen Park location) recently. Nothing fancy; just a simple chowder with more clams and clam flavor than what you find in most places.
Also, I think Elmhurst's French onion beats all.

Elmhurst in Dearborn. I can't tell you why it will be good to you, but I love it because they take their time with it, it's amazingly rich, and it's served piping hot.

Wow! La Pita in Dearborn, MI! Good stuff!

So glad you loved it! It's my favorite. Has it really never been mentioned on this board before?!

We were there last week for dinner. I thought this was funny: the bread came out, piping hot and fresh, as usual, but it was flat and very soft, not puffed and crispy as I'm used to there. The server said they'd forgotten to use yeast that day. Odd, but I wasn't complaining.

The fattoush salad is amazing. One of my companions had the Greek and it looked wonderful.
Their pricing is extremely fair, too. Be sure to try their sandwiches sometime.

Doner Kebab withdrawls in Detroit

I ate them in many parts of France and England, too. I have to admit, a large appeal was that they were just "there," like a McDonald's or Starbuck's. That's not to say I didn't love them, it was just that their convenience was a big part of why I ate them.
Let us know if you find out anything about our area.

Best French Onion Soup in Metro Detroit?

I second this recommendation. It's a very generous serving, richly flavored, and so hot you won't be able to touch it for about ten minutes.

Deep Fried Clams [Detroit]

I've had good fried clams at the following:

Dearborn Tavern (Pelham and Outer Drive, Dearborn)--they are HUGE
Elmhurst Tap Room (Outer Dr. just west of Pelham, Dearborn)--closer to HoJo's clams, but not as good :)
Leon's, which is a small chain of family dining-type places (we go to the one on Michigan Ave. just east of Telegraph)--again, closer to HoJo's, but just not as good

Michigan Frozen Yogurt

I don't know if they still serve it, but "Olgurt," the frozen yogurt served by Olga's restaurants, seems to fit the bill, if memory serves (notice all the "iffy" clauses in that statement :) Their web site doesn't show it, but darn if it's not the tart frozen togurt you're looking for.

Metro Detroit: Real New England style clam strips anywhere?

Just had some at the Dearborn Tavern (Outer Drive and Pelham). I can't vouch for their origins or fresh vs. frozen, but they were huge and tastily fried.
