New Yorker in LA looking for the best Indian, Chinese, and Pizza! Where do ex-NYers eat??

I'm from NY and have been in LA for 2 1/2 years and I can, without a doubt, say that SGV has BETTER Chinese food than Flushings. You will be quite pleased if you take the time to explore a bit.

Best sushi: Los Feliz, Silver Lake, Echo Park.

Hi chowhounds,

I haven't had delicious sushi in quite sometime since I've been on a killer restaurant budget for the last few months. Can someone recommend me a good sushi restaurant in my area? I'm not thinking fancy, I'm thinking quality. Please help me decide where to eat tonight!

Thanks in advance.

pizza stone vs. steel

I use Mario Batali's cast iron enameled pizza pan and i would recommend it to anyone. It gets very, very hot in a shorter amount of time than a pizza stone and it's easy to take in and out of the oven. I put it right on the eye with the heat blasting as I put the dough and toppings on. It has handles so you can also use it for serving. I've even started to buy it for wedding gifts. LOVE IT and I'm a pizza fanatic.

"Extra Virgin" on Cooking Channel

I really like the show. The food looks amazing and delicious. I learn a bit, it's entertaining, and I like the reality style of it. Debi Mazar and Gabriele Corcos have been running a food blog for years- Under the Tuscan Gun. So Debi has been involved and interested in food for a while. I think it's a great addition to the boring stand and stir shows that we're all used to.

Silver Lake vegetarian

I keep hearing that ELF is the best vegetarian restaurant on the East side. I've even heard this from a few meat eaters.

Lievito Bertolini and Italian recipes.

Thank you very much! It seems that all Italian baking recipes include this mystery ingredient. Hopefully I will have some good results.

Lievito Bertolini and Italian recipes.

I'm working on a few Italian recipes that call for Lievito Bertolini. Does anyone know what the American equivalent is? Is this a yeast or baking powder? I'm reading many conflicting things online. I would like to try a bisciotti recipe that calls for a .5 ounce package but not sure what to substitute it with. Please help!

Does anyone have a fail proof recipe for pizza dough? I have tried many recipes and they are too stretchy or too stiff. What recipe works for you?

Real Apple Cider.

Has anyone seen real unpasteurized apple cider at any of the farmer's markets in LA? I went to the Santa Monica market last week and didn't see anyone selling it. I've heard that they sell it at the farmer's market in Hollywood. Has anyone had any luck?
I'm regretting not buying more than a half gallon in Oak Glen a few weeks ago. :(

Where should I order my turkey for Thanksgiving?

I would love if you gave me Healthy Family Farm's email address. I went to the market yesterday and they weren't there, probably due to the weather. Thanks so much!

Where should I order my turkey for Thanksgiving?

Thank you all for your input! I'm a little sad that it seems like it will be difficult to get a nice fresh turkey this year. And I cannot see ordering a heritage bird- they are just so expensive! I'm going to try the Santa Monica Farmer's Market tomorrow and see if I have any luck with the poultry farmer and placing an order with them. I'll let you all know how that goes.

Thoughts on Tasting Kitchen??

I went about 6 weeks ago.The food was very good but the restaurant was way too dark! I had to hold up the candle to read the menu, making me feel unsophisticated and old ladyish compared to all the other beautiful Venice women. :)
I also thought they could do a better job on the wine list. I personally feel like there should always be a moderately priced bottle of wine on the list or a glass for around 10 $. The most affordable glass clocked in at 15$ and the most inexpensive bottle was 50$. Although I don't mind splurging on a nice meal, I hate feeling like I'm being ripped off on the wine.
However, I liked their menu and the seasonal offerings. My husband LOVED his steak and after tasting it I wished I had ordered it too.
Honestly, I would probably only go back if someone else was paying. I would rather go to Gjelina for my money.

Korean BBQ for beginners

Soowoon Galbi is my favorite. It's clean, comfortable, easy to order, and the food is absolutely delicious! We strayed last week and tried a neighboring BBQ because of the wait at Soowoon Galbi and we were terribly disappointed.

Where should I order my turkey for Thanksgiving?

I'm hosting my first Thanksgiving in Los Angeles this year. In my previous New York life, I've always ordered my turkeys fresh from a farm and was able to pick them up two days before Thanksgiving. I was wondering if anyone had any turkey recommendations for me here in LA. Is there a special farmer's market vendor that you can order turkeys from or a certain butcher anyone can recommend? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance! :)

molasses and bitterness.

I'm having a bitterness issue with my molasses bbq sauce. I know the molasses is the culprit but I'm wondering if it's the brand i'm using, the amount, or the cooking time that is bringing out the bitter flavor. Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas?

Suggestions for bridal shower in New Paltz?

I'm throwing a bridal shower for my best friend this summer in New Paltz. I'm looking for a cute comfortable place with delicious food. I no longer live in the area so I'm sure there are a ton of new places I haven't even thought of. All suggestions are welcome. My friend deserves the best!

BLT Steak...what to get?

The chicken liver pate and popovers are DELICIOUS! Even better that they're free. Hamachi was also a very good app.

The porterhouse and short ribs were amazing. We used the leftovers from the short ribs to make an amazing pizza the next day.

Sides were ehhh. Good but nothing really stands out other than the Parmesan Gnocchi. They were light and fluffy. But really, it's all about the meat here, people.

If you can stand another bite after consuming all that meat, definitely order the Peanut Butter Chocolate Mousse - Banana Ice Cream. It will not disappoint!

pizza birthday recommendations, help!

I'm coming home from LA and I want some pizza! and I mean serious pizza!

I would love to hear some suggestions on where to host a pizza dinner party for my birthday next weekend. There will be about 15 of us and we're trying to make this affordable (but fun!) for everyone. So far the contenders are Otto Enoteca Pizzeria or Luzzo on first ave in the east village. Otto offers a 3 course prix fix which includes antipasti, pizza, desserts, and beer and wine for $60/person. It's a good deal but I'm not sure if my crowd wants to spend that much.

So any ideas? Thanks in advance!

J&J are definitely my favorite. The broth has more flavor than Mei Long Village and the dumplings never break open before you bite into one to suck out the deliciousness.
I also like Luscious Dumplings- but the wait and the hours are annoying.

Hi chowhounders-

I'm hoping that someone can point me in the right direction. I'm looking for Los Angeles food blogs. I know Eater, of course, but were wondering if there were others.

Thanks!

BYOB birthday dinner for 6 downtown

It's not downtown but Lamb and Jaffy's in Brooklyn is a GREAT byob. It has a nice cozy atmosphere and I've had some great celebrations there with up to 20 people. I highly recommend it. Their burger is pretty good and I love their mussels of the day. Both are very affordable and delicious.
There are some byobs on the LES- but none are that great and there mostly thai places. Ivo& Lulus is fun but they do not take reservations and the wait is terrible.

pie dough help.

I rolled it out and it was absolutely perfect. And yes, reducing the amount of liquid in a pie crust will also yield a flaky crust. Too much water and too much mixing will make it leathery and tough.
