Bistro 7
With all the past talk about the lack of good restaurants in the burbs, I have to say that I will take plenty of them over Bistro 7 which, to me, was a huge disappointment. First the good: The service was forthcoming and friendly. That's it. The owner (?) or maitre d' seemed to be making some rounds but never bothered with us. Forgetting the loud noise and the bilious apple green walls, the person in the kitchen is not in line with my taste palate at all. I am accustomed to a gazpacho soup looking kind of like a tomatoey affair with peppers, onions etc. in it. What I got was perhaps appealing to those who like the taste of sour cream mixed in with the soup, giving it a thick white dense base instead of the usual base you think of when ordering gazpacho, but I ended up giving it to my mate. The bread, though a cut above in flavor, seemed more like a slice of regular white bread than French bread. The chicken was tasty and the polenta was also good. The dessert to me was a huge disappointment. I was looking forward to one of my faves -- rice pudding -- but this one, drizzled with a wee bit of caramel sauce, tasted like some kind of sticky rice from a Chinese restaurant -- bland and unappealing. I guess it takes all tastes -- we're all different -- so to those who favor this place, enjoy -- for me, it's curtains.

One night with time constraints
I highly recommend Compass which is only 4 blocks from your hotel at 69th & Amsterdam. A bit farther down the other way at 82nd & Broadway is Ouest -- another winner. Make a 5:30 reservation and you will be out in plenty of time for either one. (I actually will be dining at Ouest in a month at 5:30 and walking from there to the Metropolitan Opera at 64th, so you see, it can be done easily.)

rehearsal dinner near conshohocken?
A timely question. I am giving one for 25 people at the Fayette Street Grille in Conshohocken. But they only do that on Thursdays when you are permitted to rent out the entire place after 8 pm.

Chefs: Who is Where?
That's my whole point though. I don't HAVE the name of a particular chef. I just kind of wanted to know what chefs (perhaps unknown to me) have left one venue and started at another. But there is no such site on Chowhound (or any other that I know of) that addresses this particular issue.

Chefs: Who is Where?
I guess I should have actually asked: Why doesn't Chowhound have a site that lists the new restaurant that a chef who have left a restaurant has gone to? (Ex: Veritas) The chefdb site doesn't seem to address that.

How come there isn't a site for which chefs leave one venue and go to another?

What's wrong with Hymies or Murray's in Bala-Cynwyd? Or the new Murray's in Berwyn? They even have a dining room menu to choose from as well. Ask for Scott. He really aims to please his customers.

The Word on Le Bec Fin
I heartily agree with this post. Times change. People's tastes change. The days of "elegant" tablecloth dining are passe to more than just a few, causing the restaurant scene to have to rein in and change their dining practices. Perrier is far from stupid. He has his finger on the pulse of what's going on in Philly and he knows that his beloved LBF as it once was, is a thing of the past now. I wish him luck with his new experience. I hope it pays off. He deserves it. He is a Philadelphia institution.

fine dining w. veg options??
A place that you would love but it's not really midtown is Blue Hill. Not only is the food excellent, the ambience down-to-earth and the service friendly, but the chef welcomes vegetarians and will go out of his way to make something special for you, if you leave it in his hands. At least you might consider trying it when you are not needing to be in Midtown. http://www.bluehillnyc.com/

Good french food which wont kill my wallet
Rooney: I had to laugh because I too feel that way about the spelling of "monsieur" and other things misspelled on the menu as well. If it were an upscale restaurant I would, just like you, be absolutely turned off. But we are only speaking of a good French restaurant "THAT WON'T KILL HER POCKETBOOK." This place is not the panacea of French restaurants by a longshot but it is pleasant, popular and friendly with better than decent food -- hence my recommendation.

Steak doneness usually wrong (specifically: how should I order my Keens porterhouse tomorrow?)
When I was at Keen's, I ordered mine med. rare but wished I had said rare plus. It can always be taken back and given a bit more heat but you can never reverse a too done steak.

small italiano near Weil Cornell hospital
You want authentic? You want intimate? You want really good? Giovanni Venti Cinque is the place for you.(not cheap!) An intimate walk-down 1 block or so from the Met Museum. You'll think you were in Verona. Oops! I just noticed that I am too late. You already went. Sorry.

TEENS CELBRATING BDAY
I am confused. What place is going to serve teens "to get wasted" without quickly losing their license? Although Leahbella's post above sounds good to me, I might also suggest Blue Fin right on Times Square where all the fun & action is. There is a bar there, yes, but they also have small plates and cheese plates to choose from and it's real glitzy with all the lights of Broadway and great for people watching. I'd be amazed if they dared serve an under-age drinker.

Because I am not an experimental diner I find myself returning to Ouest and Compass more often in my neighborhood. Eighty-One and Dovetail sound wonderful for those with more ambitious palates.

La Boite en Bois -- an intimate 10-table walk-down French bistro at 68th & Columbus should fill the bill nicely. Their bread pudding for dessert is to die for. (Ask in advance. They sometimes run out) http://www.laboitenyc.com/

Fancy-pants in the burbs (savona-ish)
Not far from Savona is BYOB Sola in Bryn Mawr. Absolutely delicious food and creative chef. Gilmore's in West Chester (another BYO) is as good as it gets.

Cost of an entree at Striped Bass?
I am astounded. This seems to be a case of the blind children and the elephant. Friends of ours wanted to go there and I was not exactly thrilled about the idea but went along. I am glad I did. Not only was the service competent and friendly but the food was absolutely delicious (and I am known by some as the "impossible spoiled brat") I was shocked. Yes, the prices are "pricey." But I never cared about spending more for quality. I wish you'd give it a try. I am anxious to know if my fussy taste buds just went south or not.
