Hard Hat Vol IX

Corner Bakery has a sign up on Great Hills where Fresh Choice used to be (and where the other half is a Noodles and Company). I thought it was open since the sign was up, but I drove by and they were still working on it.

Hard Hat Report Vol 8

Drove past the Arboretum yesterday morning and saw a new Estancia Churrascari going up on the corner of Great Hills and 183. In the building behind where Kenobi used to be (I think in the space that Dan McClusky's used to occupy?). There was also a lot of traffic going in to the space Kenobi used to occupy, perhaps just making a larger building for Estancia or another restaurant altogether, not sure.

Hard Hat Report Vol 7

Is that the one where the Randalls used to be? I thought it was already open? We went in to browse about a year ago. It seemed pretty bare because the space was so large, but they didn't use it all.

Shu Shu Asian Cuisine on Burnet - Actually not so bad

Tried this place back when it first opened. Nothing to write home about. Got the General Tso's chicken. I've never had General Tso's without it being battered and fried. It was kind of weird. But if you are looking for healthy, it seems like a healthier version of General Tso's. This place reminds me a little of Pei Wei or China Cafe by Phoenix in terms of the menu. Pick a sauce or way you like it cooked, pick a meat and there you go. I wasn't very impressed and probably won't be back.

In-n-Out Burger is Coming to Texas!

I know I'm in the minority, but I think In-n-Out is overrated. Burgers are eh. Fries are eh. Couldn't really understand southern cal's obsession with that place when I lived in Cali. It's supposed to open in Garland (for those who don't want to click on the link) which is a weird place to open, I think. When I think popular parts of Dallas, Garland doesn't exactly pop into my mind.

Chinese Bakeries?

They have nasty chinese bakery brought in from the crappy bakeries in Houston at MT Supermarket and at Asia Market. I wish one of them would at least ship in from one of the better bakeries in Houston. I, too, long for good Chinese bakery items, but I don't think the population here could support it.

Austin Restaurant Week

Austin Restaurant Week is coming up. http://www.restaurantweekaustin.com/i...
Which restaurants would be a good deal? Definitely going to Perry's Steakhouse even though they have no choice because the pork chop is so good (especially the "eyelash"). Anyone think any of the other places would be worth trying out?

Hard Hat Report

There was an article in the Statesman last week about restaurants opening in the Austin area. It mentions that the owner of Zen is still waiting to open on 183 North near Anderson Mill, but that draining issues were holding up plans. He does say that opening "nine months to a year down the road, that's fine." The article also mentions other openings: Mighty Fine Burgers in Sunset Valley and a third one in Round Rock, mexican eatery Vivo in the Lakeline Mall area, and Mandola's and Maudie's at the Shops at the Gallleria in Bee Caves.

Burgers - Carl's JR in Austin

Not sure if I saw the same place or not, but on my way back from Houston going on 71 through Bastrop, I did see a Carl's Jr building up. I don't think it was open yet. Also saw another one down south 35 on the way to San Marcos.

Burgers - Carl's JR in Austin

Are these open yet? I miss their curly fries. I looked it up on their store locator, but the closest one to Austin that they have listed is in San Antonio.

Fogo De Chow vs. Estancia Churrascaria

Just visited Fogo for lunch on Monday. There were more people there than I thought there would be. I guess off the reputation of Dallas and Houston. As usual, the service was outstanding. I noticed a tiny speck of food that had landed in my water, probably from one of the carvers. The waiter picked up my cup to fill it up, looked inside, filled it up with water and a minute later replaced the entire cup. I didn't even notice that my cup was replaced until I started looking for the speck of food. The waiters must go through months of training! In contrast, the service at Estancia was not as good. The waiters seemed hurried and even when your card is flipped red, they will stop at your table. They also have a new cut at Fogo. I haven't been in a while, so it might not be new, new. Rib eye. I liked it. I'm not a big beef eater at all. However, I love Fogo and it was always a treat when going up to Dallas. I'm glad they have one in Austin, now. I'm not sure if I'm just biased towards Fogo or what, but I don't believe you can compare Estancia to Fogo. The meat just didn't taste as good or as well flavored. Spend the extra $13 and go to Fogo, or better yet, go at lunch, same food, and it's $24.50.

Favorite Ice cream, Sno Cone, or Gelato??

I love the gelato at Kneaded Pleasures, but I don't get to go as often as I would like. They got rid of my favorite flavor (some strawberry swirl thing) as well=(. I not a big fan of the snow cone stand there, though. Not enough sugary syrup=0! Anyone know of a place where you can get Hawaiian Shaved Ice here? Ice cream topped with shaved ice. Yum!
