Wedding Dress Weekend

My sister, mother and I are wedding dress shopping the weekend of October 2nd. We're staying on 38th between 10th and 11th (not a great food destination I'm sure) but we'd love some recommendations for Friday and Saturday night--good, affordable food at which we can enjoy our weekend together. We'd really like to get sushi on Friday night. Thanks all for the suggestions.

Group Dinner in St. Paul, MN

Thanks very much

Group Dinner in St. Paul, MN

We are attending a wedding in St. Paul in two weeks. On Friday night our group of friends would like to have a group dinner before joining the bride and groom at a welcome party at the Liffey. We expect that our dinner group will be 7. We're looking for good, reasonably priced fare with a great atmosphere. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Looking for Fresh Fava Beans

We arrived at the Copley Farmer's Market too late in the afternoon on Friday afternoon and Sienna Farm was all out of fresh fava beans. We would like to make an orzo salad today but are having some difficulty tracking down fresh fava beans. Does anyone have any ideas where to pick them up?

Senegalese lambchops

Latest news--Teranga is now open (corner of Mass Ave and Washington across from Seiyo). Beautifully redone inside. And the prices are very reasonable--most expensive entree is $17. We haven't been yet but are hoping to try next week. And I noted Senegalese lambchops.

Where to Buy Duck Confit

Thanks for the recommendation--I think I'm going to take the shortcut!

Where to Buy Duck Confit

I'm looking to make duck confit stuffed ravioli this weekend and wondering if anyone has suggestions as to where to purchase duck confit for the filling. (Already took a look at past posts and didn't find anything responsive).

Thanks in advance.

Dessert after Symphony Hall

We're taking my parents to see the Messiah this weekend and wanted to go for dessert after the performance. Any good suggetions for a dessert only meal out? Thanks in advance.

Cupcake Deliveries

Hi all--I'm looking to deliver cupcakes to my husband's office (East Cambridge) on Friday for his birthday. I searched the Board and didn't see this topic addressed previously (I get the sense that there is a general consensus that the Boston cupcake scene needs improvement). Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Juniper Berries

Anyone know where we can purchase juniper berries in the Boston area? Thanks for any input.

In Search of Brisket

Thanks for the replies. I got one from Savenor's in Cambridge. It looks pretty good--untrimmed--but a little on the small side, about 7lbs. Oh yeah and $3.99 a pound for brisket, that must be the New England markup because in TX they are at most half of that!

In Search of Brisket

I'm planning on smoking a brisket on the grill this weekend--good old Texas style. Anyone have suggestions as to where I can pick up a brisket? So far I've heard that BJ's/Costco is a best bet.

One Dinner in Philly

Thanks for all the great advice. We've made reservations for tomorrow night at Marigold Kitchen and will pick up a bottle of wine on the way. Any recommendations for a Sunday brunch?

One Dinner in Philly

My wife and I (two Boston hounds) are coming to Philly this weekend. We will be going to the Phillies game on Friday night and leaving early Sunday evening. So, we need recs for one great dinner on Saturday night. We are pretty adventurous, so all types of cuisine would be welcomed. We don't want to break the bank, but aren't looking for a budget meal either. Something in between would be great. We have heard great things about Philly restaurants, so we want some direction from the locals in the know. Also, where should we grab a cheesesteak for lunch? I've heard about Gino's and Pat's, but want to know if those are really the places to go. Thanks!

Query: Which meat grinding attachment to use for burgers

On the advice of the recent NY Times article, I am grinding my own beef for my father's day burger fest. I have the meat grinding attachment for my Kitchen Aid Mixer and I am wondering which grinding plate I should use, coarse or fine. Thanks in advance!

Recs for Dinner with Friends from out of Town

What are the hounds' best recommendations for dinner with two friends coming in from out of town (Arizona). I'm not sure how adventuresome they are, and I'm looking for something reasonably priced. I live in the South End and they are staying in Somerville, so I am looking for something in one of those neighborhoods or anywhere inbetween. Thanks.

Best Ethnic Restaurant Cambridge/Somerville?

I'll go with what a couple of others have said--The Helmand, especially if you haven't tried Afghani (sp?) food.

La Verdad--3 out of 4 is pretty damn good

I tried La Verdad out last night with my wife after a movie at the Fenway 13. We were there during the 9th and 10th innings of the Sox game, so the place was pretty empty. We sat at the bar and the service was great, but I would be interested to see what it is like with more of a crowd.
As a native Texan, I feel more than qualified to comment on the quality of a Mexican food joint in Boston--even if it is more of a California Mexican than Tex-Mex place. We started with the guacamole and chips. The chips were really crispy and not greasy at all. Very good, but I prefer mine a little thinner. Now I don't know who told Ken Oringer that guacamole is just mashed up avocado, but it ain't! The avocado was very fresh and tasty, but it needed vegetables (tomatoes, onions, chili's) and more of a kick. The beauty of good guacamole is the mixture of the fire from the chili peppers and coolness of the avocado. Also, the salsa's that were served with the chips and guacamole both needed more heat.
We both had just tacos after the chips. I had the fish, chile relleno and pastor traditionale. My wife had the fish and shrimp. The fish tacos were awesome--tasted just like they do in San Diego. My wife said the shrimp was great too, but I didn't try it. I loved the chile relleno and pastor traditionale. They both had the heat I am looking for in good Mexican food. Also, they had a good selection of Mexican beer. Bohemia is a tough find around here, but I think they should add Pacifico.
Overall I think La Verdad will become a go-to place for Mexican in this town for me.

Chicken Fried Steak in Boston??

If an Aggie orders it, then it is probably good. Also I will retract my earlier Chili's endorsement in favor of Cracker Barrel. I just totally forgot about that place.

Chicken Fried Steak in Boston??

I agree. Shiitake mushroom gravy on a chicken fried steak? Much too fancy! Chicken fried steak and eggs is a great breakfast, but if you are going to put anything in the gravy, it can only be sausage.

Chicken Fried Steak in Boston??

I forgot about Cracker Barrel! Definitely a great chicken fried steak option--probably better than Chili's, though I haven't had one from there in a long time.

Chicken Fried Steak in Boston??

Ok. I've been lurking on here for a couple of weeks, and I have to say that this site is great. I figured this is as good a topic as any to cause me to join and reply. As a Texan living north of the Mason Dixon line for the past 5 years, the ONLY place I have found that does a credible chicken fried steak is Chili's. I don't know if it is on the menu at Chili's in Boston, but it is the only restaurant where I would even consider ordering it here. Chili's version has a great crisp batter and most imporatantly is served with white, cream gravy rather than brown gravy (a common failure of northern attempts at this southern delicacy).
If your really craving one, I would advise just making your own. It is not difficult and is pretty cheap. All you need is some round steak, flour, eggs, and milk/cream for the gravy.
