Monday nite kid-friendly yet upscale dinner in Balto?

GW! great thinking, pomme de terre. it's not as contained as parkside but if we bring some toys and maybe other kids show up, i'll at least get to enjoy my green chile cheeseburger for a short while.

Monday nite kid-friendly yet upscale dinner in Balto?

Howdy,

It's my birthday and we'd like to go out but we have two young kids and no babysitter. Normally we'd hit Clementine or Parkside Diner, both very kid-friendly where they have a place to play while we sit and enjoy an adult meal. However they are both closed on Mondays and I can't think of anywhere else, other than fast food joints, that offers a place to occupy the young'uns. And I was hoping for something a little more upscale than Chik-fil-a.

All suggestions gratefully received --thanks,

Lulu

cask conditioned beer/ale around bmore?

i'm familiar with baltimore's better beer bars, but i would really like to sample some traditional yeast-fermented cask beers or ales. i know they are not the usual thing, have a short life , etc, and it seems when i do luck into a place serving one i'm always showing up right after the cask has been drained. anyone know a place that has cask conditioned beers fairly often, or even better right now?

thanks!

family friendly in B'more?

i realize you're both already done your trip and that this is not in the area you planned for your visit, but i want to give a shout out to clementine up in hamilton for extreme family friendliness. maybe it helps that the chef/owner has his own small kid, but the staff is great with children and best of all there's a play area with simple toys (enough to keep a 5 yo busy for sure) where you can watch from your table, and the kitchen does great mac & cheese or will even do simple plain noodles for picky eaters. for adults, the food is very good -- think traditional american with some twists -- and well priced. and they do breakfast, lunch and dinner. www.bmoreclementine.com

Where can I buy Kaffir lime leaves in Baltimore

Gardener's Gourmet/Dandelion greens in Baltimore?

I'm trying to find if dandelion greens are available retail in B'more. Tried calling Gardener's Gourmet (they sell at the farmer's mkts) and their number (410-876-7940) is disconnected. Does anyone know the deal there, and know of a place that would sell local dandelion greens?

Any good Sunday Brunch Buffets in Bmore?

miss shirley's used to be great, but the last time we were there it was beyond disappointing. it's like they are just going thru the motions now; we ordered our standard favorites and they were pale imitations of when the place first opened. it seemed like a gradual decline: every time we went, after they moved across the street, it was a little less good than the time before. don't plan on going back any time soon.

hull street, on the other hand, is great. interesting buffet with house smoked fish and maryland dishes, plus they make pancakes and french toast to order.

for baltimore brunch buffets, not much comes to mind except the over-the-top extravaganza at the hyatt. comes with all you can drink mimosas/champagne plus raw bar. plus after grazing the various buffets you order an entree from the menu...plan to spend the day!

enjoy!

Wheatena?

tried to post this before and don't know why the text didn't show up: it's been awhile, since i've switched allegiance to bob's red mill 6 grain hot cereal, but i used to buy wheatena at baltimore area shopper's food warehouse grocery stores. i know there are some dc area ones -- college park, hyattsville, to name a couple.

good luck!

Need it quick for a recipe (caldo verde) this weekend, otherwise I'd mail order. Any leads?

Wheatena?

it's been awhile, since i'm now a big fan of bob's red mill 6 grain hot cereal, but for several years i was buying wheatena at baltimore area shoppers food warehouse stores. there is one in college park, i believe. i think i also saw it at a safeway not that long ago.

Chameleon Cafe- Kid Friendly?

we have taken our son there from the time he was an infant (he's 5 now, and he too has his moments), and the chameleon staff is invariably friendly and accomodating.

(not that this is what you're after, but i just want to share that we went to charleston last year for an anniversary dinner and groaned when the table next to us was seated with a 2 year old -- but the parents whipped out a portable dvd player and the kid just watched a movie with headphones on while the grown ups worked their way through three courses. never made a peep.)

Organic Maryland apples or peaches???

ok, but when i asked the guy at reid's back in july, when peaches first came in, i had to EXPLAIN to him what IPM means. and he wasn't just some hired counter kid, this guy worked at reid's farm.

i can't find a website for reid's, can you please direct me? i just called and left a message asking them to get back to me. if reid's does do IPM, this will be wonderful!

thanks!

Organic Maryland apples or peaches???

yep, sure have. in case i have not made it clear we have basically exhausted internet research to find organic md or southern pa apples and peaches local to baltimore (within 100 miles). we don't need more links to try. what we need is if you know a specific place that you have found organic tree fruit. thanks for thinking on it!

cheers,
trix

Organic Maryland apples or peaches???

we're getting desperate!

Organic Maryland apples or peaches???

Does anyone know where to find locally grown organic apples or peaches? Or any other fruit for that matter. We go to the Waverly (32nd St) farmer's market, and no one there is doing organic or even integrated pest management (a practice that still allows chemicals but only as a last resort) fruit. veggies yes. fruit, other than strawberries back in june, no. we also have been able to find organic local blueberries.

The only producer we know of is Larriland Farms for IPM fruit, and they're an hour plus each way. We would love to know about any other Maryland or even southern PA organic growers.

Thanks!

local eat recs near berkeley springs?

i guess i should have made this clearer, but we will mostly be cooking during our stay. i'm wanting to know where i can buy pastured beef, local produce, etc., or if i should just bring it with me. i'd rather support the local economy but other trips to wva have shown that it's impossible to find, say, local sweet corn or anything else in august. i've never been to berkely springs aand have no idea what's around that area. polyface farms might be a do-able drive?

Baltimore Cupcake Company...

wow, dwbengals, were we at the same bbq? i just had bcc cupcakes at a bbq and they looked great but were terrible. really dry, and the frosting had no flavor except hyper sweetness.

good reads about eating? [moved from Not About Food]

i just read a really terrific collection of essays by james beard on cooking and eating. though i love to cook (and eat!) and also love to read, i rarely combine the two, other than reading cookbooks. but i have no idea how to go about finding other books like this one.

so my question is, has anyone read a book about cooking or food (not an actual cook book, though, i have enough of those, make that too many of those) that they would recommend?

thanks!

cheers,
lulu
