We were just there as well. Second the vote for Haag and Sons. I do like that they cut your fish fresh to order. Hint, ask to see the fish first though. After being promised the yellowfin tuna was sushi grade, we were presented with a tail end piece that was not sushi grade. Another loin was brought out and cut, and that was wonderfull! They do know where their fish is from and are honest. We are had 'unhonest' experiences from Clems and Pelicans. Haag's is hands down the best.
Only had one meal out, lunch at Fishy Fishy. Service is better this year, more staff. Food is still passable. Oh, and we had stuffed oysters at Mr P's and were thankful we did not get sick. I heard them describing specials to another table, $41 for a tuna entree?? in Southport??. Almost thought we were in Vegas there for a moment.

Town House Grill (Chilhowie, VA) - worth a 3.5 hour drive?

Just got back from our trip to Marion/Chilhowie. In a nut shell the trip is well worth it. The food is wonderfully innovative. We did the nine course tasting menu with wine pairings and it was well worth it. I do not have time right now to describe in detail, but will do so if someone would like to know the new menu. I do not think it it is up on their website yet.

Also the Black Rooster in Marion was very good. Live music on Tuesday nights!

Town House Grill (Chilhowie, VA) - worth a 3.5 hour drive?

I am so excited, we will go going to dinner at the Town Grill this Wednesday! We will be arriving on Tuesday, does anyone have any suggestions for dinner on Tuesday night?

We hope to be doing Creeper Trail on Wednesday, any suggestions for lunch? From what I understand there are places you can stop and eat while on the trail?

We are staying at the Lincoln House B&B.

Thanks!

French Fry Recommendations? Cary/Apex area

Spirits in downtown Cary also has Wedgies with truffle mayo. The fries are far from shoe string, more like a potato cut into thick wedges with the skin still on. Always very crisp but not your traditional thin cut fries.

Boone, NC - Suggestions for Lunch, Dinner

We will be heading to Boone next week for parents orientation at App State. We will be able to enjoy 2 lunches, 1 dinner, and perhaps a wine bar after the BBQ at App state. Arriving Wed evening, leaving Friday mid afternoon. We like creative foods, emphasis on quality not quantity, appreciate a good wine list, price is not an issue. Does not need to be 'fine' dining, or fancy. We live in the Triangle area and like places like Four Square, Piedmont, Rue Cler, Savoy, Daniels, Revolution, Saffron, etc. What is the best that Boone has to offer? Thanks!

Springtime at Town House, Chilhowie, VA

I have been waiting and drooling to make it to this restaurant. Looking on line for places to stay, would the closest town be Marion? Can anyone recommend a nice place to stay close by? I think it is also fairly close to Damascus and the railroad trail you can ride bikes on? Any suggestions for hotels, other restos, cafes, etc would be greatly appreciated. And, I seem to recall from another post they close most of July? Thanks!

When to go to Burger Bar to avoid a wait (in Vegas)?

I have been a few times during 'peak' times but have always managed to get seats at the bar, even as a four top. If you keep working your way towards the back, you will increase your chances of bar seating. Really limited on veg though. Fried zucchini was decent, but really wouldn't consider that a veg. Sliders are good too. First time we went we got the foie burger which was excellent. Dessert burger not so much.

Morrisville NC help

You won't find a better cheese selection than at WF Raleigh, which is not really that far out of the way. There is a Caribou at Preston corners, near intersection of High House, Cary Pky in the Brueggers building. Also in the same complex is La Farm bakery which offers a cafe experience now for lunch/brk. There is also a Wine Merchant there. Not too far away, on Harrison/close to interstate 40 is a Sam's Club with decent wine prices if you have a membership.
Saffron in Morrisville is usually good for Indian. Also in Morrisville on 54 is Rub's BBQ (name might be different now) which is good/informal

New Pub in Cary - Spirits

Great sports themed bar where the Triangle Grill was next to Circus Circus. We stopped in Saturday night after the soccer game, which was pretty cool because the whole team was there after hanging out with the fans. Interesting menu - Scotch Eggs, fresh ground beef for the burgers, Conch fritters, bacon wrapped sea scallops, currywurst, and these to die for fried potato wedgies with truffle mayo. There are lots of beers on tap too with a pretty cool mix.

I think they just opened and I couldn't find any info on a website, but the address is 701 E chatham street, Cary.

Durham NC restaurant recommends?

We recently had dinner at Revolution last week. It is fairly heavy on seafood. We had fresh oysters which was what was expected and well priced, 9 for $10, the octopus was incredible, we had periwinkles on crostini which was a bit too salty and they do have a bit of a funky taste (which was appealing to me, not DH), fried zuchini with blossoms still attached which was ok (oil could have been changed in fryer) scottish salmon with lentils and red wine butter sauce (very tasty) The bread is from Tribeca grill in NY and was very good. Service was very good and friendly with good suggestions. Atmosphere is 'urban' in feeling, lots of white with hints of rich colors thrown in. All menu items were priced well for what you got. It is a laid back feeling, servers wear t shirts. Make a reservation.

On stage: An evening with Anthony Bourdain

I recently saw him at the Durham (NC) center for performing arts, Feb 19?. We splurged on the VIP $100 ea seats which allowed you to attend a backstage book signing. I was a bit disappointed in the show, mostly because WITH prewritten audience questions it was barely an hour long. The pre question monologue was a rehash of things seen or read before - Food Network bashing, Rachel Ray bashing, etc. A bit of NR tales, mostly the anus meal.
Luckily, we were some of the first to wait in line for the signing, and while he wasn't conversing with anyone or seeming to be too glad to be there, he would inscribe the book with whatever you had written down on a card beforehand. After 100 or so people, I can see that getting pretty old.
Being in the food biz, I appreciate his sense of humor, because I think he does tell it like it is. All in all, I am glad I went. I think his NR and Cook's Tour shows capture his personality very well.

Hey Quality Counts - you were right on about Haag and Sons. We were there yesterday after a very disappointing experience at Pelicans. Lockwood folly oysters, Beaufort Oysters, off the boat head on shrimp. Very happy and will certainly check them out again. It had been a few years since we had been in there so thanks for the nudge.

I have gotten live crawfish at Grand Asia Oriental store at South Hills mall in Cary, by the Walnut street, Buck Jones rd interchange. I have not been there in a few months, but we are coming into season for them.

Love the nomiker 'Quality Counts'. You are right that quality is important. We used to go to Haag & Sons years ago, but nothing really stood out as anything being better than anywhere else. We have found the best local shrimp to be from the coolers on 210 just before Dosher cut off. When they are there, the shrimp have been very good. However, based on your input, next time we are there I will def. check Haag out again. Haven't been to OI in a few months, anything new or interesting happening? Last time we were there in Sept, we went to the recently opened Dead End Saloon (?) at the end of Fish Factory Rd. Although the kitchen was extremely slow, the food was worth the wait on most marks.

Sat lunch on Long Island

Fred19- Thanks for the rec. We ended up at Cull house in Sayville. We enjoyed the steamers! We also had the NE chowder - which was ok. Lobster roll which was good, oysters on the half which were excellent blue point, and oysters rockefeller which were very good. Service was very good, atmosphere was exactly what we were looking for.
We ended up getting lunch to go on Sunday by Orient Point ferry. The restaurant, not the deli. Lobster rolls were mostly Krabmeat, the grilled chicken I had added to a salad could have hammered in nails. I know there are lots of great places out that way, but we were pressed for time with a ferry reservation.

Sat lunch on Long Island

We are flying into Islip this Saturday, and wanted to have lunch, pref seafood, before driving into Roosevelt. I have been looking through various websites, and two places have caught my interest. Any feedback on Fatfish Wine bar and bistro in Bayshore, or Papa Joe's Shrimp and Crab in Port Jefferson? We were hoping to have something with local seafood on the water. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Southport, Oak Island NC

We were recently there, and have a few more restaurants to comment on.

Fishy Fishy at the marina is under new ownership. We enjoyed a lunch and a dinner there. One of the better wine lists in town, but that is not saying much. Only a few fried items on menu. Food was good, service greatly improved, and still the best outside seating in town.

Chagalls (where Bogarts used to be) was mixed. Good wine list, better than Fishy Fishy. Generous portions, enjoyed most of what we had. There is a new wine store in town on 211 called Grape and Ale, in the new center Dutchman Village (?) across from Hampton Inn that has a deal if you purchase wine there and bring it to Chagall on Wed and Thur (with receipt) or Turtle Island on a couple other days, the corkage fee is waved. Check on days, not positive.

NEW RESTAURANT!! Dead End Saloon in south Harbor village. Outdoor seating, menu with something for everyone. Burgers, pasta, seafood, some fried stuff, steaks, chicken, etc. It used to house Fish Factory, the relocated Table One, and had been empty for about 2 yrs. They were only open for two weeks when we were in for lunch. Not sure about wine list, wouldn't expect much for wine there.

Blu Seafood and Bar, Durham, NC- Chef's Table

Sounds wonderful! Could you give a ball park figure how much it was per person with wine? Is it a menu based on the particular day's offering or is it a menu they run for the month? Is the Chef's table in the kitchen area or in the dining room?

Long Island foodies please help

I am planning a trip that involves flying into MacArthur on a saturday around 1pm then driving to Nassau Coliseum area. I used to live in Islip area 15 yrs ago and would like to take the couple we are traveling with to a decent lunch once we arrive. A great diner would be fine too.

Sunday am we are driving to Orient Point to take ferry. Any suggestions on a nice Sunday lunch spot, pref. seafood/clam type thing? The trip is end of October, so not sure if any of the outside areas would still be open.

Any suggestions for stops on the ride out on a Sunday from Uniondale to Orient Point, i.e wineries, farm stands, etc would be appreciated. I am sure the area has changed a lot and any input is greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!

NC Beaches: Best Seafood Market?

I would suggest Oak Island. Although the restaurant scene is lacking a bit, unless you like fried seafood, wonderful fresh fish can be found. The beach at Caswell Beach is very sparsely populated, esp the time of year you are considering. Long Beach is also very nice, but suffers a bit from the view of a long strand with lots of houses on pilings. At the end of Long beach is Kings Lynn which in addition to Caswell, offers a wonderful view of both the ocean, and the marsh/intercoastal.
Southport is a wonderful old village that is a few minute drive from the island. Many movies have been filmed there and the marina has Potters Seafood where you can get fish straight off the boat. Tatums Seafood also unloads there, but I think now they have a retail store in a different location, on rte 87 which is off the main rd. (rte 211)
Along the road to the island are two seafood stores; Clems and across the street Pelicans. Pelicans also offers seafood cooked to go to order. Clems usually has a good selection of local shrimp, clams, grouper, snapper, flounder and also sells seafood from larger food distributors.
On Oak Island there is also Haag and Sons.
There is also a road side area that offers wonderful shrimp (when it is available) that you can get with the head on. It is located on rte 211 which is the main rd between 17 and southport.
Be aware however that weather is a large deciding factor on local seafood, as it seems a lot of boats will not go out unless the fishing is ideal due to fuel costs.
There are also a few threads on Oak Island/Southport as far as restaurants.
Oak Island is located south of Wilmington, about 50 min north of Myrtle Beach.
Also consider Bald Head Island, but you need to ferry over, no cars allowed. Golf Carts only, but most rentals will include the golf cart. You will also be limited by the fresh seafood selection there I think. Bald Head is next to Oak Island.
