Planting apple trees
So I found my Zone 4 parents (they live in the Adirondacks) a roxbury russet apple tree, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roxbury_Russet . Any tips on planting and pruning?
square foot gardening and companion planting
I love it! your library might not have it, but I got it for the reduced price on the sliding scale and now I keep it in my garden bag. It has a lot of neato ideas like making your own seed starter cups out of recycled newspapers and making cold frames out of straw bales.
square foot gardening and companion planting
Thanks Crockett! I have been following the advice of this little book http://microcosmpublishing.com/catalog/books/3613/ and it echoes your suggestion. Strawberries and tomatoes are tricky to include.
barVino in North Creek
great to hear! my sister and her fiance live in North Creek. I'd love to check it out with them sometime!
square foot gardening and companion planting
thanks! I'm putting in my seeds today :)
square foot gardening and companion planting
I'm putting in a vegetable garden and have been reading a lot of different blogs here and there about companion planting and square foot gardening.
I was wondering how much difference have you noticed companion planting makes? I've been trying the best I can so far, with the info I've found, but am worried I will accidentally put two plants together that are not "friends."
I like the concept of square foot gardening, but I just don't really have the plant selection to group plants by square foot every square foot. I've been trying to do 2x2 beds next to companion plants. Will that work? Is it worth it?
And one last question, has anyone had any luck getting pole beans to grow up cornstalks?
Artichokes!!! Any low fat alternatives to butter with garlic & lemon????
Earth balance is a tasty butter substitute
Making heartier tomato soup
I add red lentils and soaked raw cashews to make a hearty soup.
WORST and BEST in SARATOGA SPRINGS
I had a horrible meal at Lillians the last time I was there. My dish was over salted and they couldn't cook a filet for my dad to save their own life. My coffee cup also had lipstick on it. I would avoid that place like the plague.
Eeek! Mouse-proofing my pantry?
we went with natural pest control at the bakery I work at. They come and spray down super concentrated peppermint oil. Works great! I've never seen anything like a mouse there.
Gluten Free-Yeast free-Egg free Bread
Not a recipe, but these are some of the best breads I've found that might meet your requirements: http://www.samisbakery.com/. People seem to have mixed reviews over their stuff. If you are super sensitive, I might try something else.
best vegan substitute for heavy cream?
soy or coconut almond milk in the half and half style work well for this.

Need delicious green smoothie recipe
We've been making a green smoothie at the bakery I work at with 1/2 an avocado, 3/4 cup orange juice, a big handful of Kale and Spinach, and some hemp seed. It is great! (well everyone who tried it liked it, even people who had dubious thoughts about greens in their smoothies.) We do add ice, but you might be able to get away with frozen strawberries instead of ice cubes. Also, we have to let green smoothies blend the longest.
What is the biggest baking catastrophe you've ever had?
I made 2 loaves of pumpkin bread from scratch, including roasting the pumpkin, grinding the spices and completing them with a crumb topping.
I took them out of the stove and placed them briefly on top of the oven. (I had to move something to make a little more room on the baking rack, very tiny kitchen.) The glass loaf pan exploded everywhere. I just stood there, heartbroken for a moment, before throwing out both loaves.
It was beer o'clock after that.
Questions after making coconut milk ice cream
I'd also try using different coconut milk brands. I use "A Taste of Thai" coconut milk and it usually comes out the smoothest.

I have had a lot of luck with recipes off of this website! http://glutenfreegoddess.blogspot.com/
Cheaper alternative to Weber grills?
I bought a small, cheap gas grill and it didn't last a season. I got a weber baby q grill and it has lasted me four seasons and hasn't had any problems at all. My brother got the same grill secondhand, and when he had a problem, the company helped him with the replacement part quickly and easily.
If you can afford it, I'd get a weber. In the long run, it will save you money, because you'll need to buy a new grill less often.

Saturday breakfast in Albany
Miss Albany Diner isn't what it used to be, but it is still good and open early. Also a lot of nostalgia and near the highway.
I miss eating the georgian eggs like no one's business, now that I can't eat eggs :)

Fresh fruit recipe to lighten a heavy brunch menu?
We do brunch at the bakery I work at and often offset the heavy items like pancakes and hash browns with a kale salad with dried cranberries etc or we also make a raw hash in the food processor using yellow squash, zuchini, red & green peppers and onions served with a maple lime dressing. It was really good!
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/17/dining/17minirex1.html I've also wanted to try this too.
can a pie crust taste good without butter?
I usually do half earth balance and half organic palm shortening, EB has a tendency to shrink, so the shortening helps. Also use the sticks. They work better!
Help Getting Past White Zinfandel
Have you thought about a nice green wine/ vino verde? It is pretty easy on the palate, and pretty easy on the wallet. Although it may not be the most accessible in the state of Penn. Casal Garcia is one my favorites and about eight to ten dollars a bottle.
What Food Trend are You So Sick Of?
corn and quinoa noodles are way better than rice pasta, but are also a lot harder to find. :)
Foods you can't keep in the house because you can't stop yourself eating them
peanut butter cereal, me or my roommate can't stop eating the stuff
If you live in Europe, what American products do you crave? [Moved from International board]
I had a couchsurfer from Berlin who was in love with some local dill havarati I had and I took her out for her first hot fudge sunday. Slightly off topic, but those were foods I thought would be available everywhere.
Good non dairy yogurt?
I work in a vegan bakery and we've had pretty good success using coconut yogurt in baked goods. I think we use soy delicious, both soy and coconut unsweetened.
Anti-inflammatory foods - what to make?
Sammy's Bread! is very good and gluten free. Also comes in hamburger bun and hot dog role style. I got rid of my inflammation going wheat free vegan. It isn't easy, but the pain went away which is what I really wanted.
