Party Venue

The Steak Frites in the village has a private room downstairs and it's byow. I'm not sure what the requirements are to reserve the private room.

What happened to Grillades Da Silva?

There is also a Da Silva in the Village area. It's at 926 rue Sainte Catherine Est (not sure if it's the same resto)

Anyone check out NUVU?

I've just checked their website and on Tues and Wed. plates start at $1 when you spend a minimum of $20 on alcohol.

New Scichuanese Restaurant in Town-very authentic and delicious [KanBai restaurant]

It's KanBai (1813 St Catherine W). The Gazette reviewed it last month: http://www.montrealgazette.com/life/food-wine/Casual+Dining+KanBai/5546698/story.html

Mulling over Mulled Wine

There's a Christmas market on Place Jacques Cartier running until December 24. I haven't been but apparently they have a tent dedicated to gluwein (mulled wine).

Antoine's $20.11 lunch

Does anyone have any recent experience with the lunch special? I've read mixed reviews and just not sure if I should axe it from my itinerary. We're a party of 5, staying in the FQ, and will also be dining at Commander's Palace (been before) and August both for lunch but trying to fill our Saturday lunch with another deal.

If Antoine's just isn't worth it, I was thinking of either:
- changing Muriel's dinner to Sat lunch;
- brunch at EAT;
- or brunch at Atchafalaya

Any thoughts greatly appreciated. This trip is Feb 8-13.

Iron Chef worthy Downtown Mtl

I agree with the Kazu suggestion. Kafein on Mackay had a nice cocktail menu when I stopped by earlier this year (I don't know what the scene is like at night): http://kafein.ca/

Though I haven't been, a drink deal option may be Cartel on Crescent (http://www.cartelstreetfood.com/). It's a street food bar with a cocktail menu but the reviews have been hit or miss. They apparently do $5 margaritas and $2 tacos on Tuesdays. The deal is shown on their Facebook page.

LV restaurant week 2011

I'd love to hear any reports on LV restaurant week experiences. I've looked at all the menus and still can't decide.

Lallouz - Kebaberie

Lallouz opened in the Village about a month ago. Does anyone know if the restaurant relocated or if it is a second outpost?

Good place to get drinks around Parc and Bernard in Montreal

Why not grab some drinks at Nouveau Palais? In case you didn't know, you sit in the resto and order the tacos at the table (they make them in the kitchen).

Ice House

I went last Friday as well and it was packed!. Got there around 9.30 and waited about 20 mins. for a table. My friend and I shared the 1/2 bucket of ribs and one pork and one steak burrito. Ribs come with potato salad, coleslaw and biscuits. The biscuits were incredibly buttery tasting. We were tempted to steal the biscuits leftover at the table next to us from a couple who ordered the fried chicken. Potato salad and coleslaw were both served creamy. I just wished there was a bit less dressing because they were a bit soupy but that's just my preference.

As for the burritos, both were flavourful. My only complaint is that the ingredients weren't dispersed evenly. The meat was in the middle (mixed with other toppings) while the ends were only veggies (pork burrito was filled with sweet potato and the steak with french fries and veggies).

The only real downside is the price of the alcohol. I inquired about the wine and the server said it was $10 a glass or (I believe) $50 a bottle (I guess it's a standard price for all of the wines). The spiked lemonade is great but is also $10. I didn't think the prices mirrored the casual feel of the resto or the food prices.

I'm definitely going to go back (perhaps when it's not as busy) but with the late hours and the terrasse out front, it's going to be great in the summer.

Quartier General?

I went last night and wasn`t that impressed. Each dish was alright, nothing good, nothing terrible. For starters my friend and I had the crab cake and the suckling pig in phyllo, both were served at room temperature. The pig was sitting atop a (soy?) based sauce. It would have been better if it was drizzled on top because the roll absorbed the salty sauce.

Mains were the beef topped with cheese, served with a raspberry sauce and mashed pot. and the deer with mushrooms and lentils. Dessert was the cheesecake and chocolate mousse. It just wasn't for us. The place was full though.

DNA, Kitchenette ou Le Comptoir

I haven't been to DNA but Kitchenette has many fish and seafood options on the menu. I was there about a year ago and the cioppino was outstanding. Comptoir is probably the least vegetarian friendly. I believe the tuna carpaccio and the salad may be the only two non-meat dishes.

I also recall reading on this board that someone called ahead to DNA and requested a vegetarian tasting menu.

Yo-Mama's Bar & Grill‎ crawfish boil

No, I'm going to give them a call when I'm in town but wanted to see if anyone had any info about it on the board.

Yo-Mama's Bar & Grill‎ crawfish boil

Does anyone know if they will be doing this by the end of February (I'm in town from 23-28)? And if so is it from Thurs-Sun noon till 7ish (based on info I've seen on other sites)?

Thanks

Private dining for surprise birthday party

I am looking for a similar thing, lively ambiance, 15-20 people, good drinks/cocktail menu a major plus and apps/light food (for those that might not want a meal). Do you know if Confusion has a cocktail menu (I didn't see one online).

Has anyone ever booked a group at Au Chaud Lapin? Their website seems to offer a lot of options for groups, including open bar, set menus and hors d'eouvres.

Last year I reserved the back area of Jello Bar for a party, brought in my own snacks and had open bar. It worked really well but I would like to go somewhere else. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Commander's Palace brunch Feb. 26 or 27?

Someone commented on another site that the streetcar isn't operating on the weekend and that there may still be some traffic if we take a taxi. The suggestion was to go for lunch to avoid traffic, something which I'm now considering.

Commander's Palace brunch Feb. 26 or 27?

I am looking for some help on deciding what day (Feb. 26 or 27) and time to book brunch at Commander's Palace based on the parade schedule (what's convenient and which ones I should and shouldn't miss). I will be staying at the Place D'Armes hotel.

Thank you

Need to pick up finger food/hors d'oeuvres near Villeneuve & Parc

I ended up going the PA cheese route but thank you for the suggestions.

Need to pick up finger food/hors d'oeuvres near Villeneuve & Parc

I need to pick up food for a small gallery event tonight (15-20 people). I could go the grocery store route and grab some cheese, fruit, veggies, etc. but I would like to get something a bit nicer. Anyone have any suggestions of somewhere I can run to on my lunch break to buy some finger foods (nothing that needs reheating)? Anywhere that's a few blocks from Villeneuve. Thanks

Speakeasy type bar in Montreal?

I've been to the Violet Hour as well as places like Death&Co in nyc and unfortunately we don't have places of that caliber in Montreal. The best, that I can think of, that use fresh ingredients are Plateau Lounge at the W, Distillerie and Lab. I like Lab but I find their drinks too weak.

Does anyone know of any fine dining restaurants that have creative cocktail menus? I know cities like Vancouver and nyc do but we're lagging behind. Perhaps it's because of our love of wine.

O. Noir

On that note, has anyone eaten at O Chalet recently? Most of the reviews online are from when it first opened.

Saturday AYCD brunch

I recently came across a list off all you can drink brunches and am wondering if anyone has recommendations on the list.

We would go on a Saturday in August. One person in our group of 5 does NOT drink, so I am looking for a place that charges an additional fee for the aycd rather than it already being incorporated in the price.

I also want to choose a place where both the food and the drinks are decent. Maybe I'm hoping for too much but I'd rather skip the aycd idea than pay for tasteless food or overly sweet/watered down drinks.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

I thought the following sounded the most interesting:
yerba buena
barbounia
agua dulce
sunburnt cow

Has anyone tried Crazy For Cupcakes (www.montrealcupcakes.com)?

They were willing to make an exception for me and delivered my order for an extra $10 but this was a few months ago before they opened their shop. The vanilla minis I ordered were a bit dry but the limoncello and tiramisu cupcakes were moist. I'd try them again.

vegetarian in downtown montreal

La Banquise has a vegetarian sauce on offer now. I haven't tried it.

Restaurant Closings - 2010

I walked by today and the space is being taken over by a new restaurant. I'm sorry I forgot to write down the name (it was one word). The name is written on paper on the bottom right of the window with "nouvelle administration" written next to it.

Pushap restaurants

Thank you, it was something I was always curious about.
