Any Midwestern-style fish fries in the Pasadena area?

I know this is a long shot - especially because the makeup of a Catholic church community in SoCal is REALLY different from the makeup of a Catholic church community in Cincinnati, where I'm originally from.... but... Any one know of any good Lenten fish fries in the Pasadena/SGV/NE Los Angeles area?

Sometimes I just get a hankering for the cuisine of my former home...

Veggie & carnie options sought for visitors to Playa Del Rey/Westchester (near W. Manchester ave. & Lincoln blvd.)

I lived in Playa for a few years, and I don't see either of my two favorites mentioned here.

Alejo's on Lincoln for great Italian. Garlic, garlic, garlic.
Tandoor-a-India on Pershing (5 minute drive) for Indian. Great service, and they also deliver.

Kenyon College

I wish I'd seen this sooner. I am a Kenyon alum, and I came to appreciate certain restaurants in the area. The Gambier Deli, which is in Gambier - right by the bookstore - is excellent. I still miss their veggie subs. Our favorite Mount Vernon place was Hunan Garden, which, I suppose, is not THAT special, but I still crave it, too - and I live in LA now and can get authentic Chinese any time I want!

Between Columbus and Kenyon is Hoggy's. The first location (or one of the first ones) is located in New Albany/Gahanna, which is right on the way from the airport to Kenyon. It's barbecue and sort of down home cooking. I'm a vegetarian now, but I wasn't in college, so I can vouch for the fact that it's pretty good.

Good Bubank restaurant for work luncheon?

I work with the OP, so... No, we don't work at the studios. We are in northern Burbank. Past places we've gone have included Chadaka Thai, Wokcano, and Gordon Biersch. So that's about our price range. There are about 10-15 of us. We have a few vegetarians, so that's also a consideration. We generally try to stay within Burbank for our holiday lunch.

Legendary, Made-To-Order, Fresh Steamed Buns and Dumplings! (or "Are You Kidding Me?!") - NOODLE HOUSE (Mian Hsiang Yuan) [Review] w/ Pics!

My husband and I tried Noodle House for lunch on Saturday. We enjoyed trying the place out, but ultimately, we weren't overly impressed. Like others have mentioned, our main issue was the underseasoning of the dumplings. They just tasted bland.
We got the shrimp/pumpkin (which I think also contained pork, so I stopped eating them immediately - why don't they put that on the menu?????), the double mushroom/pork (for him), a green onion pancake, and the leek bao.

The green onion pancake was one of the better ones we've had. And I enjoyed the leek steamed bun once I added some chili, soy, and vinegar to it. My husband thought pretty much everything was too bland.

The server did seem particularly concerned that we enjoyed our food - checking on our replacement dumplings (I guess they break when boiling) and making sure everything was OK when we asked for a lot of our food to be wrapped up to take home.

I would have liked to have tried some of the cold appetizers - like the seaweed/bean curd skin/garlic thing or the seaweed salad, but two of us can only eat so much. While we did enjoy the experience of trying a new place, we probably won't be back anytime soon. Next weekend we're going to check out Green Village.

Need Recs between Ontario-Pasadena open late

My sister is coming to visit me for two days later this month, but her flight gets into Ontario around 9 PM. So, I need to find a good, CH-friendly place to eat between the Ontario airport and Pasadena open late. Maybe sushi, Mexican, something ethnic she can't get where she lives (in Spokane). Nothing super fancy or pricey. I'm a vegetarian who occasionally eats seafood, and she'll pretty much eat anything.

Already on her list of places to hit up while here are dumplings in the SGV and some La Serenata in Boyle Heights.

Any good restaurants in Santa Cruz? [moved from SF Bay board]

Used to live there, but I haven't been back in about 4 years, so if some of these places no longer exist, I'll apologize in advance! I really liked Little Shanghai for cheap Chinese (they have lots of vegan/vegetarian "meat" substitutes). Also, O'Mei is great for fine dining Chinese. The small dishes are always very creative. I'm sorry to hear Pearl Alley is closed. I had several work lunches there, and I always enjoyed it.

I know it's all crowded and touristy, but I miss El Palomar. Their salsa is so great - fresh and cilantro-y and just the right level of spice. Just nearby El Palomar is what used to be Costa Brava. I think it's called something else now - if it's even still open. They used to have great pipian dishes.

For a total hole-in-the-wall Chinese place, I ate at Tam's a lot - on Mission on the far northern end of town. I worked at UCSC, and I think my department practically LIVED at Tam's.

I'll second the Carpo's rec. There's one in Soquel and a newer one in Santa Cruz.

Pizza My Heart is good for... pizza. It's downtown.

Walnut Avenue Cafe downtown is great for breakfast, if a bit overpriced. But you won't leave hungry.

Taquerias are really good. I miss them (living in LA now, I haven't been able to find a santa cruz/Bay area representation of the veggie burrito here). I like Taqueria Santa Cruz (one on Soquel, one on Mission). Taqueria Vallarta is also insanely popular, but I think I prefer Taqueria Santa Cruz.

The Dog House in La Canada?

Any Cincinnati-style cheese coneys?

Best Fruit Tart in LA?

Porto's is a great place, but their fruit tart is just not up to par. They actually use some CANNED fruits on it. Blech.

Willamette Valley Wineries

We just did a trip through the Willamette Valley last month. I showed my list of intended wineries to a waiter and the sommelier at Higgins before we went, and they had some changes for us. I'm glad we listened to them! Their best suggestion was to go to Archery Summit. They had the BEST wines we tasted on the entire trip there.

Also, Argyle is excellent. Sokol Blosser is a nice place to have a picnic, but we were quite unimpressed with their wines. Domaine Serene was nice, but the way they move you through the tasting felt rushed and corporate. Didn't really enjoy the experience.

Argyle and Archery Summit were definitely the highlight. Argyle has a sparkling wine made with pinot noir that they call a "black brut." It's out of this world. Enjoy your trip! Or, I hope you enjoyED your trip!

WineStyles - Cool wine bar in South Pasadena

I really enjoy Winestyles. Sure, they don't have the most awesome selection, but most of their bottles are under $20. In the more expensive section, there are some good bottles from some wineries I've always enjoyed - like Frank Family. The tasting atmosphere is welcoming and fun, and my husband and I usually go once every weekend. We are not wine novices, but we still enjoy ourselves. We get exposed to 5 new wines every week, and we generally discover one or two that we really enjoy.

I've tried Mission Wines across the street, and I found them unfriendly and had a bad tasting experience there. The wine bar at the front was completely taken up by middle aged men loudly watching a sporting event on TV. The pourers were not at all attentive, and we had to do our tasting standing up in the back of the store. Sure, they have a good selection there, but I didn't enjoy myself. Winestyles is MUCH friendlier and more comfortable.

Mei Long Village for the Pescetarian

I've read a lot of the posts about MLV, but there hasn't been much mentioned as to good pescetarian choices. My husband (who will eat anything) and I (the pescetarian) are planning a lunch there this weekend, but I'm not sure what to order. Obviously, he will be getting some XLB. But how are the vegetarian steamed dumplings? Do they have fish dumplings along the lines of the ones at Din Tai Fung? Are any of their noodle dishes vegetarian?

What are our "must order" items? I've seen their menu online, and it's huge. We probably want to stick more towards dumplings/buns/noodle dishes, but I'm just not sure what we should get! All help is appreciated. At DTF, we enjoy the shrimp noodles, the sauteed green beans, and the fish and vegetable dumplings (and my husband likes the juicy pork dumplings and the pork chop noodle soup).

Portland - Veritable Quandary vs. Lovely Hula Hands

We ended up at LHH for the meal in question, and it was wonderful! I had the baby gem lettuces and pickled beet salad with Green Goddess dressing, and it was the highlight of my meal. Also had the polenta, which was expertly prepared, and my husband had the burger, which he absolutely loved. What a charming little place. I definitely recommend it.

Portland - Veritable Quandary vs. Lovely Hula Hands

I'm taking a weekend trip up to Portland with my husband, and we have most of our meals already decided on, but we're having a hard time deciding between VQ and LHH. I'm a pescetarian, and he'll eat anything. We're both into fresh, local, organic ingredients and want a memorable interesting meal in a non-stuffy atmosphere that is still somewhat upscale.

Which would you pick? My flight leaves in 8 hours, so time is of the essence!
