Cane Vinegar in YYC

Thanks - appreciate that, need it for an interesting recipe in Saveur...

Cane Vinegar in YYC

Hi - just wondering if anyone has seen this around in any of the Asian markets?

Cake enhancer

You'd probably be better incorporating a small amount of cake margarine into your cakes - check the products on the supermarket shelf - they usually contain Polyglcerol Esters & Mono & Di-Glycerides.

The difference between these & the powdered product in your link kritafo is that the emulsifiers (prehydrated & in the right crystalline form) in the margarine are going to be much more active & efficient in doing their job compared to the powdered product.

I lived in Banff and still kind of do

Belle Patate is truly a hidden gem - hope more people make the trip to this wonderful little place.

Marinated Calamari...in a jar!!

I must have been crazy because I have a glass jar of Italissimo Marinated Calamari sitting in my cupboard - why i bought them i do not know. The marinade is sunflower oil/wine vinegar.....

What to do with them??

NY foodies need help in Banff/Jasper

The Bison did change hands a while ago, it was an independent restaurant now its part of a local chain. Pre-change it was truly fantastic, post change well we've only had the pizza there & it was good but the other restaurants in the chain don't thrill me too much. Best restaurant pizza in the Bow Valley is at Rocky Mountain Flatbread in my opinion.

have to agree here, to be honest in 6+ years living here i haven't really felt the need t go there

two other places i forgot

the fantastic Belle Patate for great poutine & homemade burgers

Pizza Construction Co - make awesome pizzas & its fun to get one & eat it by the river in the little park to the right of the bridge

yes - every Thursday 10-5

i should also include both sushi places downtown - Mara's Way & Chef's Studio Japan - both are very good, a little out of the way is Wild Orchid which used to be good, but we haven't been there in a while. Sage Bistro has an excellent reputation, it is probably the best wine/cocktail bar in town & is a welcome relief from all the other multi-sportsTV wielding/Sysco menu offering bars elsewhere in town - I haven't eaten there but i know they don't skimp on the quality of their ingredients.

Thursday is Mountain Market day - lots of edible goodies in the outdoor market opposite the town hall. If the weather is nice - it's well worth a visit.

Good choices for Banff, especially the Bison - if you are mobile, head 20 minutes east up the Highway to Canmore - a Food Lovers Paradise & a contrast to Banff...

In Canmore you should check out Communitea/Moutain Mercato for tea/coffee, Valbella/Railway Deli for excellent in-house made picnic food, Grizzly Paw for great microbrews made in Canmore, the two Mexican restaurants (especially if the weather is nice), Le Chocolatier & the Iron Goat next to it (sadly the food sucks at The Goat but grab a cold beer or glass of wine on the patio, for the views are truly incredible). If you want a great bottle of wine - the wine merchant underneath the Wood at the bottom end of Main Street is a wine lovers heaven. The Yellow School Ice Cream Bus & The Thai Bus on main street are great fun on a hot day - take your goodies into the park behind the old RCMP log cabin a few yards up the road.

Rocky Mountain Flatbread is always good & the pizzas are innovative & taste great from the wood fired oven.

There's a lot more (Trough Dining Co, Rocky Mountain Bagels, JK Bakery, Crazyweed & the patio at The Wood to name but a few).

Have fun - the weather today is beautiful, the mountains are glorious at the moment but watch out for the bears!!

Canmore - Aromas Mexican Restaurant

You have to take this in the context of Canmore, nothing is particularly cheap here - althoigh there are plenty of deals available midweek or shoulder season. I agree ob the Banff comment as well, Canmore is so much better dining wise - we could still do with a couple of more interesting places especially with the demise of the Quarry and Treo.

Canmore - Aromas Mexican Restaurant

Looks like Canmore is getting a second Mexican restaurant, just off Main Stret opposite the town hall, where the coffee mine used to be located. I think it's a spin off from the increasingly popular Aroma mentioned above.

Canmore is now well on it's way to becoming a Mexican/Japanese hotspot - you are never going to be too far from a taco or plate of sushi downtown :-)

Banff for the day...

you won't miss the 30cm+ of snow thats fallen here overnight!!

China Town on Saturday

Nice! I think I might like those as well :)

China Town on Saturday

thanks for the suggestions!

China Town on Saturday

We are in Calgary this Saturday for the Make It Market - would like to take the kids for lunch in China Town, where should we go? Not fussy about the style of food, they're well educated, adventurous eaters - but looking for something good, kid friendly (ie not fine dining) & fun!

Quarry, Canmore - closed replaced with...

only noticed today but i've been out of town for a while.......

Good Earth as we attempt to beat the world record for most coffee shops per capita!!

Thai Bus / Ice Cream Bus in Canmore

Anyone who visits Canmore and enjoys the ice cream from the old Yellow School bus or the great Thai Street style food from the Thai-it Up bus, please note that these businesses are in danger of being outlawed by the town council.

It would appear to me that their presence is unwelcome competition for some of the tourist traps on Main Street & therefore Bylaw 4.21.0 seeks to make such temporary businesses impossible to operate.

I have no connection to any of these businesses whatsoever, but am just a bit dismayed to see the potential demise of what i had hoped would actually be a growing trend in Canmore (dreaming of East Indian & /or Mexican Food Carts)!!!

Please read & respond if you value these businesses on your trips to Canmore

Pizza Construction in Canmore

We are currently loving the Thai place temporarily using the Summit Cafe in the evenings as it's base. This is the same operation as the Thai Bus in the summer on Main Street - really good food and friendly people running the place. I hear there is a major doubt that the bus will be back this summer which is a big shame .

Pizza Construction in Canmore

Thanks for the heads-up, I've lived here for 6 years & never tried a pizza from this place. It's on my list now though after your glowing review!

Charnushka/Nigella seeds in Canmore/Banff???

hmmm could be difficult then, i live here & have never seen them - i bought my last lot in Calgary

Charnushka/Nigella seeds in Canmore/Banff???

try Nutters in Canmore (end of Main Street, in the small strip mall opposite the Drake pub)

Key Lime

Sobeys here in Canmore has plenty of them, in little net bags - so i assume Calgary Sobeys have them too.

Banff Dining

Breakfast here in Canmore......

Harvest for really nice Cinnamon buns - not sure about their weekend hours at the moment.

Summit Cafe for the best cooked breakfast.

Communitea or Mountain Mercato for the best coffee.

Canmore - Aromas Mexican Restaurant

We did consume rather a lot of alcohol, which pushed the price up considerably & did tip generously as the service was excellent! The food component was probably closer to $40.

I agree compared to a taco stand in Mexico, very pricey - but for an expensive-as-hell mountain town - not too bad. You can easily pay $80+ for a very mediocre meal in Canmore & especially Banff.

Canmore - Aromas Mexican Restaurant

At the bottom end of Main Street opposite The Wood is a little Mexican restaurant called Aroma.

It is run by a local Mexican family & we had a good meal there last night, it was a quiet Thursday night in the shoulder season & the place was not so busy.

The food was good, interesting fresh flavours & pretty authentic, although in hindsight I should have taken up the option on the menu to have the heat increased to Mexican standards.

The guacamole was homemade & tasty with freshly fried tortilla crisps as an accompaniment. My Azteca soup was lovely, vibrant & generously portioned.

I had the Tampiquena for a main, it was a really carefully cooked piece of steak with a ton of flavour & perfect texture, my wife had the Flautas which again was well presented & bursting with flavour.

Having so often been disapointed with Mexican food in Canada & back in the UK - we are thrilled to have this little restaurant in our neighbourhood.

Service was friendly & informative. After the previously poor places that filled this unit, this is a great addition to the Canmore dining scene.

We paid around $80 with tip for starters, main & drinks - reasonably priced for the quality & amount of food.

Perhaps the only criticism is the decor is a bit bland, but this is a hangover from the Albanian(!) & British places that were here before.

We ended up at the new Sage Bistro wine bar, lovely spot for a post dinner drink & the menu there looks very inviting. Must go back soon to check this place out properly.

The Quarry has an international dinner series coming up which looks fun & with many restaurants offering deals to Canmore residents at the moment, the scene is - by Canmore standards - buzzing at the moment!
