What bars do people go to while they're waiting to get into the Violet Hour?

Hi All - We're heading to the Violet Hour after dinner - will probably get there around 11. I have no hope that the wait will be less than an hour, but the website says they'll call your phone when seating is available.

Does anyone have suggestions for good bars in the neighborhood to ride out the wait? We're not from Chicago and don't have a clue.

Looking for Loud & Mexican

Hey All - I'm planning a get-together to celebrate a friend's upcoming wedding. She has no requests save for not having to get too dressed up and being able to drink margaritas. My only request is that we not have to eat lousy Mexican food.

Any suggestions for a place where a group of 8 would be able to get a reservation on a Saturday night with two weeks' notice? We're staying downtown but folks will be coming from the burbs, so location isn't an issue.

Thanks in advance!

Lunch on the way to Santa Fe from ABQ?

Hi All - Any suggestions for good, cheapish eats on the way to Santa Fe from ABQ? We'll be on the road around lunch, and someplace with a vegetarian option would be best. Thanks much for any help!

Baltimore: Pub grub/dining alone in Federal Hill?

Hey All - Here's hoping you can help me pass some delicious time in Federal Hill tonight; I've got an appointment later in the evening and only want to hunt for parking once.

I'm looking for someplace fairly casual, where I won't stick out grabbing some dinner solo. I'm thinking of good pub food, but other suggestions are welcome. Thanks so much in advance!

PS: Lighting that is not too dim is a plus - I'm in the middle of a good book.

Save Us from Applebee's

Hi All: My parents are flying in from the West Coast on Thursday for a slightly belated Thanksgiving the next day. They get in to Logan around 5 and I'm casting about for a place to get a bite without committing to all the fuss of a restaurant Thanksgiving. Does anyone have any ideas for a place that will be low-key (but open) on T-day? Maybe a bar with a decent menu? No huge turkey buffets or fixed menus, and (sadly) nothing too exotic/exciting. Open to locations from Boston to southern New Hampshire.

Thanks in advance for all your help - I have terrible visions of cruising up Route 3 looking for an open Cumberland Farms.

Pig picking caterers near Durham

Hi All: Just wanted to report back for folks who might be searching the archives. We went with David Sparrow from Pig in the Pen in Pittsboro. He's very flexible - can smoke at your house or bring over a pig he's already finished. He had no problem doing pig-only, and we made the fixins ourselves. Nice man, good pig.

First Anniversary Dinner?

Hi All,

My husband and I are planning a weekend anniversary celebration in Boston. Friday will be Fenway franks - where should we dine Saturday night? Prefer romantic but not oppressively so, quieter but not tomb-silent, terrific food, thoughtful wine list. I've been to No 9 Park (several years ago) and loved it. Walking distance of Copley Square would be a plus, but isn't a must.

Appreciate any/all suggestions!

PS: If you're feeling particularly generous with your advice: Sunday brunch? Someplace neighborhoody, fun and casual?

Pig picking caterers near Durham

Hey All, we're looking to host a backyard pig picking and are hoping to get some recommendations from the board.

I read the article in the Indy from last summer - it mostly suggested restaurants (Bullocks, etc), which seem to want us to get the whole meal through them. Does anyone know of someone who does this on the side? Any good/bad experiences? Thanks much!
