YVR 'hound in Bath seeking recommendations for casual dining

Bit late i realize but King William is a fantastic little pub doing excellent british fayre at a good price. Cracking roast on a sunday too. 10 ish minute walk from Pulteney Bridge.

Does anyone have any updates on best place to try in Bath for somethign a bit more fine dining. We're there in March for the night and fancy a splurge?? Needs to be in town as i'm a cab'o'phobic.

British Cheese

they do tastings at neals yard that are fantastic. you taste 10 different cheeses, and all come with a story, pairings and back history from the very knowledgable guys.

i think i'm right that the name stichelton is old english for stilton and was a bit of a poke in the eye for the cheese council who refused for the cheese to be called stilton as it's made with unpasteurised milk and the recipe for a ture stilton dictates making it worse through pasteurising.

i'd recommend tunworth, berkswell, obv stickelton and on it's day liconshire poacher - my favorite.

Tom Aikens - a little bit sad... [London]

my recolection of the exact bits and pieces we ate back in January gets hazy but your report totally matched our experience. meal started great especially the breads which were amazing, but took a steady decline throughout. we had a pre desert combining curd cheese, ice cream and somethng very fruity which i ate for the flavour experience but didn't enjoy and the gf couldn't eat at all. desert was so covered in a desicated chocolate powder that it was also hard work - the sous chef's heavy hand again.

another tell for a restaurant in trouble, i guess, is the fact we were there on a voucher and not paying full full price. fact we still left dissapointed is well - dissapointing.

Dining in Wandsworth [London]

I used to live in the middle of Wandsworth and now just round the corner.

Chez Bruce is fantastic. Been quite a few times and loved it every time i do think it helps it's on my doorstep.
I'd recommend Artisan and Wine on St Johns Hill. v. freindly, knowledgeable staff and a great less mainstream wine selection.
If you're into curry jump on a bus down to Tooting - my personnal favourite is Apollo Banana Leaf, but they're all good. Masaledar is a bit smarter after the refit.
Pub food - the Alma is good, as is the East Hill.

I could keep going - it's a great base for some good eating.

Hereford Road vs. Harwood Arms [London]

Definitely Harwood Arms over Hereford Road for me as well. The Scotch Eggs alone are worth going for. Hereford Road was good but too similar in concept to St John and latch notch or two below in my opinion.

Eating in Mallorca

OK We're back and thought i'd give a brief summary....

We didn't make it to Ca Na Toneta unfortunately due to the pool, beach, and evening test match sessions being too attractive so can't comment althoguh everythgin i've seen and read makes it sound superb.

The stand out best meal we had by far was in Restaurant Siller. It's exceptionally well run, the food is fantastic, mains of roast suckling pig and paella, precedded by mussles and figs (not together) - all of it generous and delicious. Well priced, definitely not cheap, but with 2 bottles of low end wine we were out for £55 a head. Worth it !!

From the sublime to the ridiculous. Avoid Sinbads on the seafront in Pollenca. It was the busiest joint on there in a strip of similar tourist traps. We should have known but chanced it. We ordered suckling pig but after a 20 minute wait to be told the suckling pig was off had to switch to a promised 'fresh' seafood platter to share. It was OK in places and frozen in others. The wine was undrinkable but battle hardened after few pints watching the cricket we struggled through it. On making a polite complaint when receiving the bill the head waitress, lets call her ugly, instantly got my back up by saying you ate it you pay i'd merely suggested she might like to remove the callamari main she charged us for despit us ordering it as a starter to precede the suckling pig. We had eaten it but we'd also eaten all the bits on the seafood platter despite most of it being frozen!!. I don't know lets just say ugly had a shocking customer service manor. She called the police when we refused to pay 10 euro of 60 euro bill. Rather than really rile the local and without enough words of Spanish we paid up and avoided the spanish gendarmes. Food is awful, staff rude, it's for chumps not c'hounds. Please don't go there !!

Finally our stock favorite everyday dining out place was C'an Ferra. A friendly team who look after youin a simple place on 2 sides of an alley of the seafront. The rotund proprietor is a jovial host and while the place is touristy they had many locals in too. Stick to the much ordered classics calamari, Paella, Pig, etc etc and you don't go wrong...the fish wasn't fresh the calamari was but they pointed this out to us when we ordered. Struggled to spend £20 a head even the night we had paella for 4 between the 2 of us.

Go to Siller, everynight if pockets allow, but you shouldn't be dissapointed in C'an Ferra.

Eating in Mallorca

these places sound fantastic, will definitely check out Siller. and Ca Na Toneta sounds perfect. We're flying out tomorrow. Are there any other similar sorts of good traditional less touristy places people would recommend.?

Cheers for the local knowledge so far. I'll post back on what we find.

Pollenca - majorca

Dear hounds,

My friend and I are off to Majorca on Wednesday for some R+R in the sun. We're looking to take it easy, soak up the sun and relax for 5 days. I can't do that without good food, well i could but what would be the point., so are there any places you would recommend please?

I'm not really looking for fine dining just local fare served in a good setting at a good price. Happy to take the hire car up to the mountains, to pretty villages etc in search of true majorcan delicacies but i'd like to avoid Palma and the more local to Pollenca the better.

Cheers in advance,
Fat Eddy

My London Restaurant Plans (so far)

If you don't mind venturing bit further a field Tooting has some amazing curry houses. my personnal favorite is the Apollo Banana Leaf. Does fantastic Sri Lankan food - Dosa's, Stringhoper fry, Rotu Khoti etc. Brick Lane deosn't even get close.

The Best - Haggis [Scotland, near Stirling]

thanks folks - Macsweens it is

The Best - Haggis [Scotland, near Stirling]

Dear hounds,

We're off to Scotland in a few weeks and want to try homecooking a Haggis. I did some research and found Dalbeattie seemed highly thought of but I wonderred if any hounds had any other recommendations or does it not make that much difference?

We're going to be near Stirling.

Best,
Fat E

Good burgers in London.

i'll second Wolfe's. went with the family a while back and had great kobe burger. place is more than just burgers and was great value - only downside a major lack of atmosphere.

Best Sushi in Manhatten

Thanks everyone. From what i've read here and elsewhere on the board I've booked in at Yasuda infront of Yasuda. Shoud i be slightly scared, i'm happy to try anything but i'm not that clued up about sushi?

Best Sushi in Manhatten

Hi Chowhounds,
Appologies if this has been posted before but i'm in NYC for one weekend only at the end of May.

I'm looking for great Sushi which i hear you're good at.
My main criteria:
Value for money counts lots.
I don't mind where it is - good food is worth travelling to.
The food should be the star, i'm less worried about service.

Any suggestions would be very appreciated.

Gull Egg Season

I've heard that gull eggs are great and need to give them a try. What does everyone think, are the good? Also does anybody know when the season is and where to buy them in London?
