Week in Escondido/San Diego

Next time you are in town ( I have 2 kids) and take them everywhere : The Wooden Spoon, Bellows, Cucina del Charro, Roma Market, Northgate market or Vallarta (just a grocery store but great tacos inside), Ali Baba (Iraqi food), Vintana patio outside. We have great mexican food, HdV is good but we go there for setting. Stone Brew has become a giant PITA to go there with all the beer bus tours. There are some tiny tiny taco shops and mariscos places that I can suggest. Bull taco in Oceanside too

No kids then: Vintana inside, The Bellows and get extra cocktails, Bellamy's, Stone Brewery but make a reservation, Land and Water company in Carlsbad (HEAVENLY..amazing), Paon

Lunch in Carlsbad

Loved Paon and I really really really want to go to Land and Water. I actually really liked Green Dragon Tavern, great space inside and very good lobster roll.

The Wooden Spoon in Escondido

It is on East Valley right next to Wedekin's bakery and we sat outside. We got there at 5:30 but inside was full already, it is tiny. Think of a taqueria shop with an order counter and a handful of tables that got converted. The outside patio is nice. It is very relaxed.

The Wooden Spoon in Escondido

We (2 adults and 2 kids) went last Saturday to check it out and had a fantastic meal. I think the articles in UT and Eater have served as great advertising.
Started with cream of tomato soup, salt and vinegar pork rinds, pork belly toast with pesto and aoli. Entrees were the spoon burger, the lamb shepherds pie, the Japanese eggplant and the 4 cheese grilled cheese. Dessert consisted of chocolate chip cookies made to order with cold organic whole milk, butterscotch budino. Keeping the review simple because we want to go back. Nice and rustic outdoor seating with heaters, casual. It was busy!!!!!
Best of luck to the chef

ISO: your favorite croissant in San Diego

I love Darshan Bakery in Encinitas near the Self Realization Fellowship. Their croissants are excellent IMHO

Coming from LA for a few days...

In Little Italy: I would go to Bencotto/Juniper and Ivy/ Ironside Fish and Oyster
Point Loma: Point Loma Seafood because it is a fun area and you could go to the lighthouse after.
La Jolla: George's the top outdoor area for a spectacular view and good food
Tadokoro sushi or Sushi Ota for sushi..must eat uni, it is really good in SD
I think you would have fun at the Little Italy Farmer's market

Chow in Escondido?

Went once to El Tapatio and never went back. Too mediocre for the many choices in Escondido. I am personally a big fan of the food areas at Northgate market and Vallarta market.

Chow in Escondido?

The Bellow is wonderful and one of our favorite places. We are within stumbling distance and love having something so good so close.

They open tomorrow. "The Bellows" opened by the owner of Churchill's has been received very well by the community. Inland Tavern will be in a good location.

"Inland Tavern and Grill: (Formerly British Pub, Penny Lane) Chef Rob Conaway plans a menu that blends coastal California ingredients with international flavors in San Marcos"… hilarious, let us see what they come up with. It will be a major revamp and the sad Penny Lane def needed it.

You should stop on your way down at Chino Farms in Rancho Santa Fe..a Gucci veggie stand, cash only, very interesting produce. Chefs from local restaurant acquire vegetables from them and proudly state it on the menu.

Foie ban no more??!!!

Sweet baby Jesus..I hope this story is real and I hope a restaurant here in SD will be courageous to serve it ASAP. PLEASE oh PLEASE. Been making it at home but would rather leave it to the professionals to serve a perfectly seared foie.

You will have a great time, I am still suffering from post vacation depression and withdrawals from daily fruity/girly/island cocktails.

Oh and for maximum relaxation with a cocktail in hand (add $9 to have it in a pineapple) get one of the lounge chairs that faces the beach instead of the pool. See the difference in the two views!!

haha, we came from So CA too. Happy hour at Monkey Pod!!!! Great drinks for $8 and good apps and pizza. Aulani has a downstairs bar where they had music at night, good drinks there too and specials on pupus. I think a walk to Longboards at lagoon 3 is worth it for the frozen Mai Tai, i was skeptical but that baby was orgasmic in the middle of the day.

I would def suggest a walk to Roy's and Monkeypod. A burger at the poolside lounge at the Aulani was $18 and came covered in onion rings and BBQ sauce. At Monkeypod for $14 you get this amazing flavorful saimin, local veggies, local family made noodles. An entire prix fixe dinner at Roy's was $45.. appetizer, entree and dessert.

No! it was not good, you can read all the Tripadvisor reviews too and the reviews on this board. We did not try Ama Ama but everything else was mediocre. BUT BUT BUT everything else was fantastic, it was fun, gorgeous, great cocktails, great rooms, service etc. Typical Disney, they do everything well except the food..in general. There are so so many other options around the island that it is worth getting out. I was expecting it so we planned accordingly. Just a quick walk across the street you have several options. You will have a great time! One of the poolside shacks had good coconut shrimp, the poolside menu had the typical dry burger, bland chicken fingers, some salads. It does not matter, you are in paradise and it will taste better.
