I love HEB, but this is more of an "xx reasons why xx is great" opinions piece than a "rating." For example, reasons why it's the best include "Texas shaped tortilla chips" and "funny promotions."

The link I'm referring to:

El Chilaquil in San Antonio

I'll be traveling through San Antonio, and would love to find an inexpensive, authentic Mexican/Tex Mex restaurant. I'll be on my way back from an outdoor adventure, so nothing fancy. El Chilaquil seems to fit the bill, but I can't find much information or a menu online.

If anyone here has experience at this place and can fill me on on what the offerings are and what the specialties are, I'd appreciate it.

Bird's nest soup in Austin?

I think I've seen this boxed up at the Asia Market on the southwest corner of 183 and Spicewood Springs, but not at a restaurant.

Besides Amaya's, who has crispy tacos?

Jorge's on Hancock, Arandas on S 1st, El Borrego de Oro, among others.

Groupon Restaurants to Avoid

Do you actually have experience dining at a restaurant that's done a Groupon? I've been to Groupon restaurants that have sold out of their vouchers, the day after the voucher was sold, and have never experienced dissatisfaction with food or service.

Provincetown on the Cheap

I'm headed to Provincetown in a few weeks and I'm looking for some affordable chow. I'd prefer for it to be decent, of course, but price is key!

Good quick eats off 81 in Virginia?

I'll be driving from Charlotte all the way to Connecticut next week and am looking for some good, quick roadside eats. I have my dog with me so I'd prefer a drive-in/drive-thru place. Anywhere from around Christiansburg to Staunton would probably be best. Thanks!

2 Cheap, local meals in Cambridge/Boston

I'll be driving from VT to the Cape in a few weeks with a short stop in Boston. I currently live in Austin and I'm looking for an inexpensive lunch and dinner in Boston and/or Cambridge. I'd prefer something that can only be found in Boston/Cambridge but would also not mind a cheap, hole in the wall ethnic restaurant. I know this is a tall order but if you could tell me some of your favorites I'd appreciate it.

Not interested in BBQ, Mexican or Vietnamese. We have plenty of that here!

Sonoran hot dogs?

I think I've seen something like this at the La Pulga Market that pops up on weekends in a parking lot at Elmont and Pleasant Valley.

Late evening boudin and cracklins in Cajun Country?

I'll be traveling east towards New Orleans this Thursday on I-10 and am looking for some eats on the way. My usual stops (Don's and Poche's) will be closed when I roll through between 9pm and Midnight. Does anyone know places where I can pick up a link later in the evening?

Best ny/nj pizza in austin

Nikki's and Slices and Ices are good for when you want Times Square style NY street pizza, but if you're looking for more inner-Brooklyn, old fashioned flavor I would head to House Pizza on Airport. It has the char, dough bubbles on the top of the crust, oil sheen, super thin crust-- everything. I'd go for the pepperoni pie instead of the fancy stuff.

Drive-thrus, drive-ins and walk up windows

Hey all--

I'll be taking a road trip from Mobile to DC via Charlotte during the heat of summer and won't be able to leave my dog in my car to go eat. I wanted to know if anyone had recommendations for local, cheap drive-thrus, drive-ins or walk up windows. I will taking the following highways:

65 from Mobile to Montgomery
85 from Montgomery to Charlotte (then on to Greensboro)
29 and 360 to Richmond (or I may stay on 85 if there's good chow)
95 to DC

Chinese buffet?

I'd go for Sea Dragon's lunch buffet. It doesn't have the extensive selections of the other places (no sushi or mongolian grille), but the selections they do have are way above average. They also have some Vietnamese stuff on the buffet.

Places that are Popular to Hate

If Tamale house was ever good, I don't know when that was. No offense to your name, but "glorp" sounds like a good way to describe their migas-- there was more unidentifiable gloppy soupy base there than there was eggs! Maybe this is a good go-to place for hungover UT hipsters from Plano but if you're really into good chow I don't know how you can like this place.

Al Pastor on Riverside - Overrated

If you're talking about a taco trailer in front of the Korean market, that's not the one that everyone talks about. The Al Pastor trailer of legend is down the street-- across Parker and in the parking lot on the other side of Church's. It's not in front of a Korean market, it's in front of a Mexican disco and the Al Pastor restaurant. And they don't run a 5 x $5.99 deal or have that on their sign. It just says "Al Pastor."

You went to the wrong place. Try again. And yes, the right one is "the best we've got."

Best Italian Beef?

I'll be in Chicago late next month and I'm looking for the best Italian Beef sandwich in the city. I'm staying in Lincoln Park and looking for somewhere within a half hour on public transportation as I will not have a car. Most of the city (but not out in the burbs) should be fine.

Smoked Boudin @ Willie's BBQ

Tried Willie's for the first time yesterday, and picked up the boudin and a half-pound of brisket. The boudin wasn't Louisiana caliber, but is the best I've had in town and definitely not borderline nasty like the boudin I got at Sambet's. It's nicely spiced and has a VERY crisp casing that makes it possible to eat straight up instead of squeezing the filling out or dealing with a stringy casing. I would have liked it to be a little more moist and maybe cheaper ($2.85 for a single link).

The brisket was moist and tasty, but could have stood to be smoked longer. I like my brisket to be almost falling apart and this definitely needed some knife pressure, but it was good nonetheless. The ribs looked delicious and I look forward to trying them and reporting back. I encourage everyone to stop by and check out this local institution.
