Good Prime Rib??

Alton Brown is a proponent of the opposite method: start low, finish high. America's Test Kitchen seems to agree, and stated that starting low activates enzymes, mimicing dry aging.

Anyway, I've never been, but the next time I'm craving an inexpensive prime rib, I'm going to try Billingsley's. It's on Pico, in West LA.

Little Next Door - A lot disappointed

I went last night for dinner and was very disappointed. After being seated, we were simply ignored for ten minues. Then the menu came, without the wine list. 10 minutes later, the wine list arrives. 10 minutes later, not even a peep from our waiter. No water, no table setting, nothing. Service was so slow that we walked out. I'm certain nobody noticed. Also, what's with the wine list? It reads something like this: Glass $10.00; In house Bottle $80.00; Retail Bottle $40. I realize that most places probably mark up their wines the same, but still, you can't help but feel like a sucker ordering a bottle of wine there. Especially when it seems like a better deal to just order glasses.

I won't be going back, especially for dinner. It seems like more of a lunch place, they only had three entrees, which are listed on the chalkboard. The menu is all lunch stuff.

We ended up walking over to Food Court LA and were very pleased.

Red Mango Now Open

I'm surprised there hasn't been a thread about this yet. I'm told they opened last Wednesday, and I went last night. It's on Pico, next to Starbucks, across from the Landmark. I'm not a huge fan of yogurt, though I admit it was kind of fun waiting in line at the Pinkberry in West Hollywood when it first opened. The whole fro-yo craze/war seems a little silly to me. Anyway, the yogurt at Red Mango is quite good. It's decidedly sweeter and creamer than Pinkberry. Their literature boasts that Red Mango is made of real yogurt. Though I enjoyed it overall, I left disappointed. I was hoping they would try to differentiate themselves from Pinkberry. Unfortunately, it felt like yet another carbon copy* of pinkberry with similar decor, similar toppings, same flavors, etc. With so many competitors offering nearly identical product, the market just doesn't seem sustainable.

*I use the term loosely, as I'm not sure who copied who. As I understand it, Red Mango actually came before Pink Berry.

I love Lucques, but they're in different leagues. There's no question, I'd choose Bastide any time by any measure (except maybe cost).

Buffalo Burger at Surfas Cafe a solid contender

I tried the buffalo burger over the weekend. Agreed, juicy but not oily or greasy. The meat itself isn't too flavorful. I might try it with blue cheese next time.

Bastide - Well?

There's actually been a couple of reviews of Bastide in magazines lately. Los Angeles Magazine and LAT (or was it Weekly?). I'm sure that it's still going strong. I couldn't wait for it to reopen and ate there shortly thereafter. I thought it was fabulous. It's pricey though. I definitely won't be able to afford it again for a while.

Hip and Happenin' on the Westside?

What's wrong with Table 8? The westside is generally staid compared to the Hollywood spots. Maybe Katsuya or Bandera or the Penthouse at the Huntley.

Jade Palace on California Ave in Palo Alto

I just wanted to bump this thread and heartily recommend Jade Palace. I agree with suzanolivia, the location is awful and difficult to see from the street. Hey, no waiting(!) but it would be a real shame for this place to close down because they serve the best Chinese/Cantonese food in the area. Try the Thai shrimp and green geens. Plus, the decor is pretty nice compared to most other Chinese places in the area.

Best kept secret in PA.

Quick question that I can't find a straight answer to: when braising something, say beef, what is the proper liquid level? Should the meat be totally covered [fully submerged] by liquid?
