Nola mothersday cookbook [moved from New Orleans board]

Thanks for all the help. My mom tends to like cookbooks with pictures in them...not so much because we look for recipes that look good but we sometimes need help figuring out how it should look. The Paul Prudhomme's ones sound good. Hopefully the greater complexity would be more of a fun challenge for my mother and I to recreate. Thanks for the suggestions and Happy Mother's Day.

Nola mothersday cookbook [moved from New Orleans board]

I am a graduating tulane student and have parents that love new orleans cuisine. They have even made trips downn here just for the food and not to see me...but they wont admit it. jk. anyways, they will most likely not be coming down as much after my graduation but i would love to find a cookbook that has recipes (not so much of your typical blackened whatever or fried this or standard gumbo) of more i guess fancy or fun/funky new orleans cuisine...more so your brigtsens, uperline, NOLA, GW Fins type foods. Also, my mom is alergic to shellfish so as long as its not too packed with shellfish, i think it would be a perfect gift. Thanks for the suggestions.

overrated restaurants

i am usually a corned beef person, but after sampling the pastrami at katzs, i have never been able to eat anything there other than that, or have i managed to find a better deli meat. If anyone has any recomendations for better pastrami or great corned beef i cant wait to hear. their hotdogs aint half bad either.
i thought second ave deli was overrated but i guess thats y they r shut down.

What's the best Mexican fast food chain?

great place i went to when visiting a friend @ maryland u. cant remember the name exactly but think it was called california burrito and it is a chain around the mid-atlantic...greatest aspect was the 30 or so bottles of sauces you could choose off their wall. Best sauce I tried was JT Pappys which ive only seen in NOLA since but it was amazing

Hattiesburg- Meridian- Tuscaloosa - B'ham-Chatanooga-Knoxville-Harrisonburg

Making a road trip back home from NOLA to NJ and have already received some great sounding ideas but I think I will be taking my time on this trip and could probably use some more stops along the way. Fairly fast, inexpensive, and delicious are all major pluses.

Willing to go slightly off the beaten path if the place is a knock out. I love food and whenever I hear some place is the best, I have been known to do almost whatever it takes to get a taste. I will most likely be by myself for this journey so I dont need any fancy places or 3 course meals. Especially looking for great BBQ, meat and 3, possible dessert places (possibly pie, bakery, or ice cream shops) for quick pick up and eat snacks along the way, hidden gems, and down right can't be missed stops. Breakfast Lunch and Dinner are good because I have no idea when I'll be passing through each of these areas.

Thanks for all previous suggestions and any new light that can be shed on these areas.

If you ever have questions about places like this in NOLA...that is my specialty.

Best in NOLA

Places that I have come to love over the years...

For an extremely fun atmoshpere with deliscious food that you can't replicate, Jacque-i-mos cafe is top notch, only warning is that the food is on the heavy side, but definitely worth the calories. that is uptown on oak street.

My favorite seafood restaurant of all time would have to be GW Fins in the FQ.

If you're dying for foi gras being from chicago, cuvee's on magazine street near the quarter is second to none.

For a big name chef pick, just recently ate at Emeril's NOLA and was nothing short of exceptional.

Upperline has a great menu with an art packed atmosphere which constantly brings me back. They also claim to be the first restaurant to have combined fried green tomatoes with shrimp remoulade and from my experiences...they also perfected it.

For very fine dining, you cannot go wrong with Restaurant August just below the FQ. Havent been there in about 4 years but am chomping at the bit to go back which luckily will be in 2 weeks.

Iris, another restaurant uptown just past carrolton has been open for about a yearish now and has not wasted any time impressing. A very small restaurant with friendly and attentive staff, chef Ian combines his Food and Wine's, Best New Chef cooking ability with a very inventive and delicious drink menu.

I have not been to all the places you have but Commanders and K-Pauls are still terrific.

In response to steveds... Bayona is amazing (get tuna if they have it on the menu that night) and have not yet been to Stella!

Other places I would consider for a great meal would be Brigtsens on Dante Street uptown, or Dick and Jennies down Tchop Street.

roadtrip stops back from school

its basically a trip that goes from NOLA and I pass by hattiesburg to Meridian to tuscaloosa - birmingham-chatanooga-knoxville-Roanoke-harrisonburg-harrisburg-then NJ. The exact map is below and I guess I pretty much want to stop off close to that route without too many detours. I actually have a book made for roadstops across the US but the places to this point have been on a range from superb finds to mediocre and being the last trip of this kind for me I don't want to miss any of the can't-misses. Thanks for all help!!!!

Best Restaurant Deals

This needs to be continued as I am on a budget but love new orleans' food. Ralph's on the park brought back 3 appetizers and a glass of wine for $25...i would check the website to get all the details. I also read that cuvee will be adding a prix fix lunch on Wed. and Thur for $23. I also feel that being able to eat Crabby Jacks for less then $10 for lunch is a steal. Asian Cajun also has a very competitvely priced lunch menu...any one else have some suggestions?

roadtrip stops back from school

Unfortunately my college adventures are coming to an end, but I still want to have more things to look forward too, and whats more exciting than food. My trip is one from New Orleans back to NJ. I go through Miss, AL, the northwest tip of GA, Tennessee, VA, W.VA and western MD. Any places that are must-go-tos along my path. Love anything but need at least one great BBQ place. Nowhere too expensive or too slow. I look forward to seeing where this roadtrip back home before the real world takes me. Thanks for the help.
