Joan's on Third definitely has it! right up front in the new and improved cheese case. William Sonoma also has it mail order.

Any Bar recs in Downtown LA?

I love Redwood but beware, on Friday and Saturday nights there is a D.J. starting at around 10 and the vibe quickly changes from mellow neighborhood bar to loud dance party. Fun though better than any place in Hollywood IMO.

Best Chicken tikka masala

Anarkali on Melrose and La Brea have a fantastic Tikka Masala sauce. Creamy with just enough spice. I will often ask for a side of it to dip naan in in addition to what the dish comes with. You can never have enough sauce!

Where can I get farro

I believe Farro can also be purchased at CUBE on La Brea in the "market" section of the restaurant. But it is much more reasonably priced at Bay Cities Italian Market. I love farro! It happens to go really well with steak among many other things.

The Farm of Beverly Hills

The Grove location certainly is not. I was asked to a lunch there so the choice was not mine. I ordered a Tex-Mex grilled shrimp salad with the dressing on the side. The salad was made from shredded iceberg lettuce, some black beans with no taste and some grilled corn. But the worst part was the the 4 measly shrimp that came with it! I believe the salad was $16.95! for 4 shrimp! I was glad I got the dressing on the side since my friends Chinese chicken salad was drastically over dressed. A much safer bet would definitely have been the burger. The people next to us had it and it looked pretty good. The whole meal was roughly $80 including tax, tip, two salads and a glass of wine each. Way overpriced for what it is. I think of many better places to spend $80. Sorry I didn't have better news. The Canoga Park location could be much better but surely the same prices.

Where can I buy fresh lobster?

Just tackled this issue myself. Had a fantastic lobster dinner at my friends house and the search for the right lobsters was much talked about. We live in WEHO and they live in Silverlake. Went to the Bristol Farms on Bev. and Doheny waaaaay to expensive for lobsters in murky water. Didn't have time to go to SM Seafood but that was my next choice. We ended up with great lobsters that were $16.99 a lb. from the big fish market in Glendale...can't remember name since I'm never there. Well worth it and I would go back for the lobsters there any time, in fact, I wish I lived closer because it is a great place to get fish!

Pollo alla Valdostana (Chicken with Prosciutto and Fontina Cheese)

This is a delicious recipe. You can even pump up the flavor by adding crushed canned San Marzano tomatoes to the butter and white wine sauce. But I have to say the picture above makes this dish look really unappetizing...

Favourite pizza topping combos?

Gorgonzola dolce with toasted pignoli nuts, carmelized onions and a touch of balsamic. OR carmelized mushroom and onions, fresh thyme, talleggio cheese on a whole wheat crust. The nuttiness of the crust is a perfect complement to the cheese....now I have to make a pizza. @!@%&*!&#

Providence chef's table tonight

We brought a bottle of rose' champagne and an amazing French white then ended up ordering a full bodied Italian red for the cheese course. It ended up being a very financially sound decision to bring our own wine. :)

Providence chef's table tonight

Yes indeed. We celebrated our anniversary there this past Saturday night. We did not sit at the chefs table but had the chefs tasting which was 13 courses, 3 of which were dessert, and had an almost identical meal to fooddude37. Quite impressive and absolutely delicious. Still thinking about that foie gras....

I hope these places are not to far to walk....it should take about 10 minutes each way. On 3rd there are numerous places to eat, many that deliver which may be of use to you. I would ask when I go in if they will deliver to the hospital I'm sure many places will. OK. I am channeling my best 14 year old...On 3rd Street
Berri's Pizza 8412 W. 3rd - any type of pizza you can imagine, sandwiches, pastas...when I was 14 I would have wanted Berri's. They deliver

Joan's On Third - Gourmet takeout, lots of imported ingredients and fresh farmers market salads, great desserts and mac and cheese any kid would love. I can only assume not everything on the menu is organic...there will be stuff there for you and him.

Zen Grill - 8432 W. 3rd Street- Asian cuisine. mix of Japanese, Chinese, Thai... the noodles and the soups and appetizers may appeal to him. Delivery available

Chipotle - La Cienega in the front street level of the Beverly Center. chain burrito shop with good quality ingredients. (There is also a CPK there but I have a hard time recommending it)

Absolutely PHO-bulous - Pho noodle shop on La Cienega and Beverly

Delivery only : Vito's Pizza on La Cienega, best NY style pie in the area ( a subject of much debate) great calzones. they deleiver but it takes a long time. 310-652-6859

Bossa Nova - Brazilian food, on Robertson, great sandwiches and salads, rice and beans healthy options and unhealthy but very good options, like the Coxina, shredded chicken and cheeese in deep fried dough...http://www.bossafood.com/

I am falling short on breakfast places...sorry. if I come up with any that are close enough I will let you know.
Good luck to you and your family and may your son make a speedy recovery.

Cupcakes :: the Good, the Bad, & the Ugly...

Bluebird Cafe and Bakery on National in Culver City has fantastic homemade tasting cupcakes. First of all they are huge! A person could easily split one with someone else or just induldge in the moist and creamy goodness. red velvet is my favorite. I brought them to a birthday party and people were freaking out! The cupcakes were a big hit. They thought I made them because they have that slightly unpolished look. Definitely worth the trip to Culver City. Here is the website with all the cupcake info...

The Sunday farmers market on Melrose Place in WEHO has a stand that sells fantastic hummus, tabouli, grape leaves and fresh homemade pita. We stop there every Sunday. The guy will also let you try anything he has.

New restaurants in Culver City?

There are GREAT cupcakes in Culver City on National at The Bluebird Bakery. My husband orders them all the time to bring to his staff and they go crazy!. The red velvet is my favorite. They are quite big and have that homemade look, not like Sprinkles, much better. I brought them to a birthday party once and people asked all night where the cupcakes are from! i encourage you to try them.

LATE NIGHT EATS IN CULVER CITY?

Although Bottlerock is really more of a wine bar than a restaurant they have a few tasty snacks and some great cheese and obviously fantastic wine. But the one snack really worth mentioning is the brioche grilled cheese with truffles...don't know if is truffle oil or sottocenre (sp?) tartufo cheese but it is amazing and I could eat 10! I have on many occasions ordered more than one in an evening. The perfect way to end a long day if you ask me.

I do like Ford's Filling Station, great homemade cocktails and very satisfying flatbread pizzas. Not Hollywood sceney...

I love K-Zo! Glad you found it!

Wilsons is great and the staff is very laid back. Don't worry about it being too fancy. I have ended up there after many a long day.
Kinda wish I lived in Culver City....

Intelligentsia Coffee...boring, sanitized & oh so precious

I disagree. I think they make a pretty good cup of coffee but their Black Cat espresso is fantastic. I grind it at home and brew it as my everyday coffee. I also long for a rich cup of coffee closer to an Italian espresso but have had a hard time finding it in L.A. The Black Cat definitely satisfies my picky taste in coffee, although it is an marketed at an espresso. I have tried Kings Road, which many swear by, but it ALWAYS makes me jittery. I absolutely refuse to go to Starbucks or Coffee Bean. I may go to Peet's in a pinch. I would choose a cup of Intelligentsia coffee over these massive chains any day.

chateau marmont vs bar marmont

I forgot to mention, although the food is good at The Chateau I don't think of it as the kind of place I go for the food. Not a destination food spot. Great atmosphere.

chateau marmont vs bar marmont

I have been to both but haven't been to Bar Marmont in years. I do love to go to Chateau Marmont for drinks as often as possible. The Chateau has a beautiful garden that you can eat and drink in and the food is much better than it used to be. I believe they hired a new chef a year or two ago to revamp the menu and revamped it is. The food and drink is not cheap for what it is. They charge hotel prices. The Chateau can also be a little intimidating at night. It is a spot frequented by celebrities so the door policy gets tight once the sun goes down. I really love it for lunch, much quieter. That atmosphere inside is also very cool and dark a specific to that hotel. Huge antique lamps, dark wood romantic without being precious in any way. Bar Mormont is a bar and gets rowdy like a bar they may serve food too but I do not really remember but I think so.

Fine Cheese "Bar"

Agreed. AOC has the best overall cheese/wine experience. The selections of wines by the glass are fantastic and there are usually wine flight options as well. Really a fine cheese lover experience to sit at the cheese bar, which is a special request, and watch all the perfect cheese and charchuterie go out. BLD has a nice selection as well but it is loud in there! Don't personally love CUBE. Food was really mediocre which sort of ruined the cheese for me.

Batali got the boot (from FN)

No matter what people think of Mario Batali and his many extremely lucrative career moves, there is just no denying that he consistently recreates regional Italian cuisine that is accessible to the masses. All of his cookbooks with the exception of The Babbo cookbook (and even that is not that difficult) are easy to use with great results. I say it's the FTV's loss. There has been new "management" there the last few years and IMO the programming has been seriously slipping. Better for Mario that he gets out now. He'll be great in Spain and Gwyneth will bring in the non-foodie viewers. Smart move for PBS.
