Kolaches

I guess its a matter of preference then. I had a friend who worked at the Village Bakery so I have had them many times, but certainly not better than Ole Czech. Well at least if you are ordering the meat or poppyseed varieties. They are better than Czech Stop in my opinion. Not near as large of a selection at Village as there are at Ole Czech or Czech Stop.
Now my mom and dad LOVE the bakery in Hillsboro. It is good, but I like more fruit/filling than dough so I like Ole Czech better, as do my siblings and cousins. But my older relatives tend to like the Hillsboro ones better so they may be the more authentic.

Don Panza is Back (Now it is La Carreta Argentina)

I'm so glad that we found Don Panza's again! They changed the name (now it is called La Carreta Argentina), the location and the menu has a bit more added to it, but the empanadas are delicious as always. http://www.lacarreta-argentina.com/

There were 8 of us and we ordered 3 dozen empanadas (so about 4 each). You do have to wait a little bit to get your food, but when you get it ....YUMMY! My favorite are the ham and cheese, but most people in our group liked the spicy beef. We also tried the garlic fries (good), a caprese salad (okay) and their version of potato salad (I'm a mustard potato salad girl, but I'll admit theirs was interesting in a good way and had peas in it!) Over all we LOVED it!

The new location is fabulous and I love the decor inside. The bar is gorgeous and should be opened next week according to the owners (hopefully their liquor license will be in). They plan to have Tango dancing sometimes and other dances/entertainment. There are lunch specials for $7.50 with a different special everyday.

I recommend it highly and think that the husband and wife who run it are very sweet and I wish them all the best of luck!

Waco Food?

My brother loves Lolita's (I am not a fan of Mexican food at all). He lives in the US Virgin Islands now and anytime he comes home he asks for Lolita's beef fajita with salsa. It is kinda a hole in the wall type place, but according to my brother and dad very, very good.

My Waco recommendations are Cathay House on Wooded Acres just off Valley Mills Drive. I love their Chicken in Garlic Sauce or Hunan Beef. Their Hot and Sour Soup is also a favorite of mine and my sister. I live in Dallas now and I have not found any Chinese food as good (yet). BTW, I think that they are closed Mondays.

Also, Uncle Dan's was just introduced to me this past week. I love Potato Salad, but I hate onions so it is a rarity for me to go out to eat and love the potato salad. But Uncle Dan's Yellow Potato Salad is awesome! I see that someone posted that they will ship to you, maybe I can get some potato salad here STAT. Yummy. The BBQ beef was also very good.

Bridesmaids Luncheon Venue

Not sure where the church and reception sites are so these may all be too far away, but check them out.

Love the Arboretum! It is probably my favorite, especially during the blooms (end of March until beginning of May). I think it is about $30 a person. They also do a light salad lunch that I have been to for a bridal luncheon.

Maudee's on Lovers near the Petco (or Petsmart one of the pet stores). I think it is about $18 a person. Nice, but the scones are just so so. Very intimate for tea, as it is a small shop.

Grand Lux at the Galleria. Really good scones, but the tea is in bags. Not really my idea of tea, but the food is REALLY good. The noise level in there is soooo loud so make sure to go in the middle of the afternoon. My sister did this for her bridesmaids and we liked it.

Adolphus. It has been a while since I've been there, but it was nice. Very, very formal and the most expensive of any of the above. I probably wouldn't recommend it for a bridal party unless you like the extremely formal and prim and proper thing. Also, you have to valet park.

Arlington Hall at Lee Park. I haven't been there yet bc you have to have a group of 8 or more to reserve, but they have several different tea menus. I think that they specialize in Bridal teas. If you decide on this, let me know what you think. Here is the web addy:
http://www.arlingtonhallatleepark.com/TeaMenu.htm

Chocolate Angel Tea room in Richardson (now also in Plano near the Willow Bend Mall). I haven't been but have heard rave reviews. I think that they are also a little less expensive.

I saved this from the guidelive.

It is a feature on teatime in Dallas.

Best places in Waco?

Yum to Schmaltz's. My sister always wants to go there when she is in from DE. I also LOVE the Cathay House, the best Chinese food. My parents are big fans of Heitmillers off I-35 just north of Waco. I'm not a big steak lover so I think it is just ok (also they are renovating it now and the inside is kinda a mess). I love Rosa's. I know it is a chain, but it is delicious.

Dallas - Argentinian Restuarants

Is this place still open? I don't see the website anymore.

DFW- Best scone request!

Thanks for your tips everyone. I can't wait to try Central Market's scones. Still haven't made it to Doughmonkey, but it is def on my to do list. I made the scones for our tea and luckily they received rave reviews (or everyone was being very nice).
Anyways, if any new scone places come up, let me know.

DFW- Best scone request!

Don't waste your time with Sweet Temptations. Really not very good at all. I will try Doughmonkey and hopefully I'll have a winner. Since I tried Sweet Temp's, I have been trying to make them on my own and think I may possibly have something better than what I've had in DFW so far (aside from Grand Lux).

Kolaches

I am from West and LOVE kolaches. However, it surprises me that so many people think Czech Stop has great kolaches. So next time ya'll are headed the West direction, go into the town a little bit and stop at Gerik's Ole Czech Bakery. (If coming from Dallas, go east under the overpass on Oak. It will be on the right side of the road past a car lot). Guys these are much better b/c they are made with better ingredients, ie cream, butter. Not better for you, but if you're eating a kolache you probably don't care about that. The dough will taste sweeter and more buttery. Try one first to make sure you like them, but they are delish.
Now they have these huge non-cinnamon rolls that are fabulous. They are in so many different flavors like poppyseed (my personal fave), strawberry cream cheese, Italian cream, apple strudel and peanut butter. I try to go in every time I visit my parents to get some and they are always sold out of the poppyseed spins so I would call them if you want them to save you one. 254 826-3309 . Also, their ham and cheese kolaches are melt in your mouth wonderful.
Oh, and Czech Stop is by in no means bad, especially if you are driving through late at night and they are the only place open. They have some awesome cookies chocolate/coconut. Like a Mounds bar. But really, I only go there for the cookies.

DFW- Best scone request!

I am having a garden tea next weekend and wanted to have some great scones. Any ideas? I love the ones at the Grand Lux (but they are kinda pricey). Today I am going to Sweet Temptations to try theirs. I also saw on here that someone recommended Drip Coffee for their scones.
Thanks in advance.

Yummy Donuts (DFW)

I've been looking for a good donut place. But which place are you saying is good? Yummy Donuts on Lovers or Kountry Donuts in Grapevine??? Thanks for the info.

DFW -Lesser known restaurants near downtown

Thanks for all the info. I'll let you know how we liked Kavala's.

DFW -Lesser known restaurants near downtown

Hey all,

Some of us at work are starting a dining out club to meet once a month at a little or lesser known restaurant near downtown. We work at Parkland and would want places no farther than 15 miles from work. First up we are going to go to Kavala's. I also wanted to bring up Don Panza (sp?). Any other good suggestions for me??? I'd LOVE at least 10 more places.

Thanks

DFW-Good Chinese near the Arboretum

I just moved out by the Arboretum and was wondering if there is any good Chinese food in the area. I saw the Szechwan Pavilion in passing. Is this good? Any other recommendations for Chinese or other good food in the area?
Thanks
Val

Best Gift Baskets in the Dallas Area

I'm looking for Holiday gifts to send to my doctors, dentists, etc. Anyone know of some really good gift baskets, with yummy food inside. I've seen the Edible Fruit arrangements, but they're kinda pricey. I'm wanting to spend around $30-$50. I'd like something local.
Thanks in advance!

Finding REAL Dr. Pepper

The Dr Pepper Museum in Waco has it.

Looking for Tea Rooms in North Dallas

Been there. (Meaning Petit Four). It was good, but not great. I love really, really good scones and these were just so-so. Nice though b/c they let us just sit for hours and talk and didn't make us feel like we needed to leave.

request for suggestions for lunch in Waco

I love the Cathay House for Chinese food. It is the place that I like to eat when in Waco. BBQ.... Hmm, I think Michna's used to have really good BBQ, but not sure anymore. I like Rudy's, but not necessarily the best BBQ. For Tex-Mex a lot of people like La Fiesta, but it is not my fave. I think that Rosa's offers better Tex Mex.
I'll call my parents and see if they can give more suggestions.

Looking for Tea Rooms in North Dallas

In the Galleria, the Grand Lux has a nice tea. Not traditional cups and pourings, but great tea sandwiches and scones. Really inexpensive for tea too. I think less than $20. Also, Maudee's on Lovers is good. If the Arboretum is already open for Holiday tea, that would be the best choice.

Texas sausage makers - wieners

Not sure how far you're willing to travel, but in the Czech town of West there are 2 great meat markets. The first is Nemecek Bros. I love their weiners and ring bologna. My dad prefers the Hot Chubbies and the West Specials (pork coarse ground hot dogs...kinda garlicy). Also, there is a bakery with a Smokehouse there, I think Ole Czech Smokehouse. They also have good sausages and kolaches.
Here's the site for Nemecek's:

Salem for Halloween

Thanks for the responses. I am going to print these out and take them with me. Is the Mexican food restaurant really an authentic restaurant? I've tasted Salsa from the north and it tastes more like marinara than salsa. Of course, you guys have the sandwiches, pizza and seafood there so everything can't be perfect.

Salem for Halloween

My friends and I are going to Salem for Halloween and we would love to know some of the great places to eat. If you don't mind, please specify the prices as low, med, or high. I would love a great sandwich (b/c as everyone knows Texas doesn't make sandwiches like ya'll do) and delicious pizza. But any variety of food that is really good be sure and list for us.

Thanks

NYC Style Deli in Big D

I tried Deli News after a trip up North, but the sandwiches don't compare at all. I couldn't put my finger on what wasn't right (certainly less variety in choices of sandwiches). I may go back and try the pastrami on rye with the pickles as recommended. But if it doesn't measure up again, I won't bring my brother in law there and try to pass it off as a good sandwich.

Tea/Afternoon Tea

My friends and I tried Petit Fours a couple of weeks ago. It was good, but the scones were sub par. Too dense. Otherwise, a very nice experience. We weren't rushed at all and we sat there for over 2 hours enjoying tea. Also, I got a petit four to go and it was delicious!

Waco, Texas Chinese Buffet

The best Chinese food in Waco would definitely be Peking (off Valley Mills Dr) or Cathay House (I can't remember the location). My family is a big fan of Cathay House, but we usually don't get the buffet there. Try the Hunan Chicken or Schezwan Beef. Hot & Sour Soup. I wish I was there right this second.

Best Bakery for Petit Fours and/or Sugar Cookies (Dallas, Richardson, Plano area)

I love the petit fours (mmm, the double chocolate) at Petit Fours on Blackburn at McKinney downtown. They are kinda pricey $5 a petit four and south of the Richardson area.

Urban Taco

I love Tecole. I am in love with the Grilled Corn Elotes! I can't wait to have them again. I had the Smokehouse Combo, which I thought was good since it allowed me to try different things. I wasn't a big fan of the Chicken Mole Taco, too sweet for me. But I liked the Pork Carnitas and thought the Beef short Rib taco was great. I would definitely go there again.

Tiff's Treats in downtown Dallas

We ordered these today at work. We loved the cookies, but were disappointed when they told us you had to order at least half a dozen of a certain kind. You couldn't order just one chocolate chip, 3 oatmeal ch. chip, 5 snickerdoodles, 3 oat raisins to make a dozen. Delicious though!

Cafe Ashton - FW

I've heard good things about the tea there, but haven't been there myself yet. It was on one of the Texas morning shows and all the sandwiches and pastries looked sooo good.

Tea/Afternoon Tea

Has anyone ever been to Arlington Hall at Lee Park? I'm not sure, but I think that I heard that it is run by the person who did the tea's at Lady Primrose. I hope that I am giving accurate info. Here is the website, it looks like it has a wide variety of tea menu's.
