Fresh garbanzo beans
Thanks so much for this! I just bought a huge bag at an El Super Grocery store in Orance county. I had never seen them before and all the lables in the market are in Spanish...asked a gent what they were,,,,he told me garbanzos and pointed to some dried one in another bulk bin.
I couldnt wait to get them home to figure out what to do with them : )
Fork Bistro - Montrose
Wow, looks as if you had the same great experience that I did! Our group of 7 was there on Tuesday night too : )
We took over the bar and 2 had to trickle over to a table since some lame-a**ed dude wouldnt move over to make room...whatever.
Anyway, I LOVED the brussels sprouts, the steak,a nd everything else.
2 of us went back yesterday for lunch. I had the BLT and I was soooo happy! My partner in crime had the chicken sandwhich and he loved it too. I know I will be visiting often! : )
Knife Sharpening Where Should I Go?
Great info from all y'all!
I cannot thank you enough!
Knife Sharpening Where Should I Go?
Re: "take the edge off "
Ha : D
Hmm, that does kinda make me have to hesitate...but for free, I can use one of my other crazy knives...I just hate the idea of having my knives outta the house.
Knife Sharpening Where Should I Go?
Thanks timtab!
Awesome! I'll hit the Sur La Table this week!
Knife Sharpening Where Should I Go?
Does anyone know of a great place to get my knives sharpened/edged and all that good stuff?
I'm in Glendale and would be willing to travel if I have to.
Any suggestions and links will be much appreciated.
Thanks y'al!!
The Horror ... Branson
Favorites when I was in Branson:
Vaskins Deli for sure!!!
Top of the Rock (closed fro remodeling)
Jose's (off the beaten path, east of Hollister...with my last name being Gutierrez, I'm a bit picky of my mex food and was beyond-surprised when I found this amazing gem!!!)
Dylans Pub (if you can deal with the smoke in the bar, the burgers were excellent along with the seasoned tatertots!!!)
And of course:
The Sunday Brunch at Big Cedar lodge!

The Horror ... Branson
I used to LOVE Billy Bob's from 1995-2000. But I think Billy Bob passed away baround 2004.
Celebratory dinner for 11 meat eaters and a vegetarian
I would go to GRACE.
Meat.
Game.
FIsh.
and if I were forced to be a vegetarian, I could survive on the chefs ability to make veggies and vegan dishes to satisfy me.
I have ordered a vegetarian item once just becasue it sounded so goood and it was excellent!
The wine list is great too!
Enjoy.
LA folks - Couple of questions
Hello masnole,
Save the "extensive wine by glass list" for when you get to the "valley"...there is an excellent place in Glendale called PALATE
( www.palatefoodwine.com ) and their wine list is amazing along with the food.
Also in Glendale is BASHAN ( http://www.bashanrestaurant.com/ ) which also has excellent food and wonderful service.
Have a great visit!
Happy Hour Bailout!? Eagle Rock/Eastside
OINKSTER
has my favorite happy hour.
BURGER+FRIES+STELLA (on Tap)=$7.00
Whoo-hooo!
The burger is EXCELLENT and it's big enough for the 2 of y'all to split it. They have 2 big screen T.V.s but it's not a dumb-ass sports bar. The ketchups and pickles rock adn there ar other beer specials from 3-6.
ENJOY!
Porto's Bakery -- I am speechless!
Your " it was like a drug deal going down " is priceless.
Thanks for the giggle.
Hitachino Nest question
Oh, I've fallen in love with Hitachino Nest (the pale one)!
It's is so delicate and refreshing, like drinking a beautiufl prosecco that goes well with a burger but doesn't leave you feeling too full.
I'm going to try Red Carpet since they're close.
Thanks y'all for bringing up this topic...can't wait to go hunting for that cute little bottle.
Good eats Glendale
PORTOS
for sure!
2 Potato Balls
2 Meat Pies
2 Guava Cheese Danishes
Can be consmed in one sitting (don't do it in public, people will think you haven't eaten for days) or enjoy over a couple of hours...it is so hard to resist saving the goodies for later.
Help! Need Eastside bar (full bar) with good food!
Good Morning cinnberry,
I think your group will be just fine.
I will warm y'all, there are LOTS of smokers outside and they keep the doors/windows open, so the smoke pretty much blows into the place...one of the main reasons I do not go so much anymore-especially if I want to eat-there is nothing more disgusting than having to smell smoke when trying to enjoy something to eat.
If smoke is bothersome, try to go before 7pm-ish...never had a smoke-problem on a weekend afternoon.
Great Dinner @ Bashan [w pics]
Good Morning Griller,
I'm beginning to creep myself out now...a friend came in from the west-side last night and wanted to "try that new place by La Cabanita"...yep, she meant BASHAN...went again last night (these people are gonna think I'm crazy-showing up all the time)...I let my friend choose everything since she hadn't been...wound up with the pork belly (this one was exceptional), sweebreads, gaspacho (golly, even better than the last time-my friend just wanted to have a tall glass to drink) duck (she said "well, I've never really liked any duck, I wanna try this one to see if it is any better...she barely shared it with me) the duck has these delicious little figs that I could eat like candy, and the halibit...this was the regular portion size-wow-excellent, and we had the peach napolean for dessert.
I'm not too sure about the corkage, I don't think it's more than $15...I think it's waived if you buy a bottle from their list too.
I hope you get a chance to try it out again.
I'd love to know what you think since it's obvious from many of your posts that you have great taste.
I do know that one of the reasons I adore the place is because of the hospitality...we are never rushed-sometimes spending 4 hours to chat, sip, and nibble.
Gotta go kayaking...gotta paddle off the pork belly.
Have a great weekend.
Oh, maybe you should try a visit tonight...Rosso wine, the little place next door is having their anniversay party from 4-8pm...start there, end at Bashan.
Osso Buco - Where can I find the best in LA?
There is one random place that I used to go to just for their Osso Bucco...FAR NIENTE on Brand Blvd in Glendale.
It's been about a year since I've been, but I've always loved it and they serve it with the best risotto...I must make a visit soon, it's been too long.
Great Dinner @ Bashan [w pics]
burumun,
Great pictures!
You have great taste.
This is one of my top 3 favorite so-cal spots, for many reasons.
I noticed you've had the great fortune to visit L'Atelier in Paris...envy envy envy...been to the Las Vegas on 6 times now...love it, obviously...I do adore Bashan's sweetbreads even more than L'Atelier (don't tell anyone).
Have a great day!
Great Dinner @ Bashan [w pics]
Wow Griller141,
I must be completely clueless, but I have been going to BASHAN since they opened and I can hardly say that the menu has gotten stagnant.
In fact, I went a week ago Thursday, the we were there again on Saturday, and again the next Tursday...each visti was excellent!
The new salmon prep on Saturday was outstanding, the first Thursday I got a brand new Halibit prep that kciked my ass, the tuna tartare and the beautiful gaspacho was like nothing I've ever gotten to enjoy in quite some time.
I can never tire of their sweetbreads or their prokbelly...always wind up with duck...last Thursday, "jet-set-playboy" and I ordered oysters, sweetbreads, tuna tartare, gaspacho, pork belly, duck, and the (amazingly perfect) 28-day dry aged beef...hmmm, far from a stagnant line-up...ohm I almost forgot, e had the peach napolean too...so good!
As for Verdu, the place did not "fail", the owner went on to other things, nothing to do with "failing', Verdu was packed every night.
As for the "sleepy-ness" of the neighborhood
Bashan was packed on Saturday as well as on of the Thursdays...to top it off, what I love the most about the place is that you'll see plenty of returning faces who are always super-friendly, wine-loving people. It's not going to be packed every night of the week, it is on the higher end of dining, but well worth it.
Another great thing about BASHAN at this moment is taht there is a young lady who is in charge of the wine list and she is dead-on with food/wine pairings.
On Sat, we did the WINE and DINE LA tasting menu, with wine pairing, and it knocked our socks off!!! There is no attitude with the wine list, just considerate selections that will showcase/compliment the food...the just got a few new dessert wines-yum! They are also great when you bring in your own bottle...I love that there is a place so close to me where I can celebrate a bottle of wine (good wine should be celebtated...with good company and good food) and know that there will be someone there who will know what I have brought and wilol be happy to make great suggestions on what to order to enhance the wine or let it just sing with the food.
Hi Diana, love your opinion on plenty of places, but I goota tell ya, BASHAN rocks!!!...the portions are perfect, far from tiny...the pates they use are pretty big and the portions of any animal-bit are prett hefty...considering the richness of each dish, quality of ingredients, and the artistry of the presentaiton...holy cow, I would die if the protions were any bigger..then again, we like to order many different things.
REVIEW: Chronic Tacos, Newport Beach
la tache burger,]
I Love your taste/revies of all things super-swanky-pants-places.
I have to say, I had no clue you'd be "slumming it" with some of us at a taco place.
You Rock!
REVIEW: Chronic Tacos, Newport Beach
Wow,
forgot all about this place.
A year ago, 4th of July Weekend, we ended up there on our way down to Rosarito...just pulled off the road to get gas, realized we were hungry and need to coat our bellies before the rot-gut margaritas made their way to our bellies...walked in to a Subway-left...it smelled sooo bad and no AC.
Saw a big banner for a Grand Opening of Chronic Tacos (silly us, we had no clue about "chronic" since our drug of choice requires a glass, cork, or a sugar cube) headed over and it was AWESOME!!! Huge burritos, grea guac and salsa and the people were super friendly.
Only ate 1/2 the burrito...it traveled well, tasted great at 3am after too much beer/margaritas...always think I'll get to another sometime but I always head south to kayak at 5am so no place is open.
Oh, the tortillas were perfect, even at 3am, after sitting in a truck in July in Rosarita.
Help! Need Eastside bar (full bar) with good food!
YORK
YORK
YORK
did I mention: YORK
I've been thinking about them quite a bit lately, it's getting closer to the time to go enjoy some of those fish and chips and a great beer.
Hmm, I wonder if thye're still serving their Heirloom Tomato salad...anyone know?
Pretty good wine list.
They mix great cocktails too.
Elmer Dills, 1926-2008
Aaah.
I have fond memories of waiting with my Grama, to watch Elmer Dill's food commmentary. The weekends always revolved around watching Julia Child, The Galloping Gourmet, Great Chefs of:, and that Cajun-Cook guy, and Elmer Dills.
I guess I was a foodie-in-training since I was a tot.
Elmer Dills was a part of the beginning.
Kinda like the Huell Howser of food.
RIP
Tasting Menus?
I've really enjoyed the "art" of the tasting menu at SONA.
So many random things that I would never had thought of putting together worked out great.
EX: Fois gras (how do you spell it), aspic, and creame fraiche parfait as a dessert. It was amazing..along with everyhting else we had.
2x
I've also really enjoyed HATFIELDS (a few fun quirky things)
and of course BASHAN. Their amuses are always a delight!
Wine in the Movies
Can't say that I've "learned anything" from wines in movies...but, boy, they really get me in the mood to drink some.
Last Friday, "Jet-Set-Playboy" and I went to see Bottle Shock...movie ended, we looked at eachother and said "WINE. Gotta go get some wine."
Thanks goodness Palate was willing to let us order since we didn't get there till 10:10pm...had just a hint too much wine...felt it in the morning, but it was well worth it.
Sunday night pre-fixe
It may be outta the way (but at least you will have plenty of FREE street parking and no attitued) but I would highly recommend BASHAN in Northern Glendale.

Review: Divina Cucina, Montrose
Yeiks, you're killing me with the porky-goodness. I guess I should try to make it to the Foundry sometime but it's almost impossible to get myself to venture out with places like Bashan and Palate and the chopped salad and carpaccio, and pizza fro Davina.
Wasn't the "swinealicious" dinner at Ingredients amazing?
Funny thing is, I am writing this to you from atop of the beautiful chopping board/back counter from Ingredients...it's my desk now...my fitness studio is in the Ingredients space...much good food is enjoyed in this place, still.
As a matter of fact, you can read about how much I've enjoyed some leftover pizza from DAVINA here, several times.
I do really enjoy their pizza, especially for it's ability to taste amazing the next day without being refrigerated...also love their beef carpaccio...I get it with just a drizzle of their sauce and some arugala...so good.
I hear Alfi (from Bistro Verdu) is on one of the places that Mike is watching over...Sgt recruiter?
Good value wine bar for a date?
I would highloy recommend BACARO Los Angeles off of Hoover and, I think, 24th, near USC, but I guess that's not in your area.
Really wonderful wine selection. Great small bits to eat. Friendly staff that are passionate about food and wine.
I wish I had more reasons to be downtown so I could justify some more visits to them.
Enjoy if you get a chance to go.
