Best fried chicken in Durham and Chapel Hill NC
Many may laugh but Time Out has great fried chicken (and yes I've had it sober.) The other that I'd reccommend would be Acme, much more so than Dip's.
Bald Head Island - any suggestions for good food?
Simple answer is no good options but island market (the grocery) does a decent job with breakfast. The selection is okay but it's kind of like food lion items at whole foods prices. This is generalization and you can get decent meat, middling produce and surprisingly (for an island) weak seafood unless there was a fishing event on the weekend. Wine selection is decent for new world tastes but not for small european producers.

As of today not yet. Usually mid to late June they start rolling in.
Rocky Mount , NC for lunch?
Central fits that bill just fine. Is the burger greasy? yes. Are the fries frozen? yes. Is it a heck of a lot better than Wendy's? yes. It's not Toast or Sandwhich but it is still a perfectly good quick lunch in Rocky Mount. It is along the same lines as Sutton's in CH.
Looking for a gathering place (drinks & light food) for a largish group after work in Durham or Chapel Hill after work…
On a Friday evening, I think you're going to find most places will require a fee or minimum if you get close to 40 or 60 people.

As an eastern NC boy, I agree with B's, Wilbers and the nod to #1. Heck and even Stameys but The Pit? Skylight or Parkers could've been included.
new in chapel hill
The Crunkleton is bar only but very well worth it. Excellent beer and liquor selection with solid, inexpensive wines by the glass. It's name comes from the owners, Gary and Megan Crunkleton. The interior is tans and browns with mission furniture. The artwork on the walls are original Michael Banks' pieces. Great atmosphere and great bartenders but I admit bias having been a member before they opened. It is a great addition to West Franklin.

I hope I heard incorrectly but there is an ugly rumor that Sandwhich is closing due to their loco landlord's new rent. I really hope this is not the case.

Can Champagne Go Bad?
Champagne ages but can go bad just like another bottle of wine can. Vintage champagnes from good houses definite can get better with some age. It depends upon the vintage and your taste in wine. I like yeastier, older sparkling wines but my wife cannot stand them. She prefers them closer to release. Either way if you received it last Chritmas, it still is perfectly fine unless it just happened to be a bad bottle in the first place.
Cheap Soul Food in Durham/Chapel Hill area?
I've only eaten there for lunch and I know it's served at least the five week days.
Chapel Hill, NC recs
Merrits is open at 7am and a single layer BLT is the best breakfast option in town. The grill is closed on Sundays but every Saturday I hit it for a sandwich before I run my dogs.
Aside from their beer selection I believe Milltown to be mediocre these days (at best). It is pub fare just not what I consider to be tasty.
Southern Rail, Carrboro
Mike Benson is a very nice guy and I'm sure the place will do well. Cafe St. Ex is uber hip in DC and Mike is a very good fit for this location. I'll give it a couple of weeks to settle in but I have a lot of confidence in his ability.

Retail Southern Season carrys both varieties. In restaurants both 411 West and Lantern sell it in Chapel Hill.
