Hollywood restaurants

Might have been good once but....

Hummus and babaghanoj were passable. Turkish pizza was greasy and not at all great. Best of the lot was the house made gyro sandwich.

Fine Dining Fresno Area

Ate at Trelio's last night and was totally underwhelmed. Lackluster service, overcooked halibut, tough to chew tri-tip, chocolate desert that tasted a bit litke it shared the fridge with the blue cheese....oh well, life is full of disappointments.

Banquet at 3660 on the Rise Reviewed

Several months ago I posted a request for a suggestion for a wedding dinner near the Kahala Resort in Honolulu. After looking at the board's responses I selected 3660 on the Rise in nearby Kaimuki.

The party was a great success. The food was spectacular, the room lovely and overall I was very impressed with quality of the operation. The seared Ahi was one of the best if not THE best I have had in MANY years of eating that dish.

Unfortunately, when we arrived en masse in the limos at the appointed time, there was no one to greet us. The girl at the desk had to be approached and asked where we should go. Her unenthusiastic response was..."down the hall, first door on your left." We were left to find our way on our own....not a very cordial greeting.

Once in the room the cocktail ordering procedure was adequate if a bit slow. A few more waiters would have sped the process along. After that, the service was excellent and the pupu's superb. The panko crusted scallops and the kailua pork egg rolls were both amazing.

The braised shortribs were heavenly and the sauce on the chicken was exquisite. The bread was made from taro and was delicious. The mashed potatoes were as light as clouds. Certainly the best banquet meal in memory. Tab ran about $70 per person for food, liquor, wine and tip.

Darren, the banquet manager was helpful and efficient.

Overall, highly recommended.

Recommendation near Kahala Resort on Oahu

I was very impressed with 3660 on the Rise ( a less than 10 minute cab ride from the Kahala Resort). The seared Ahi was exquisite.

Wedding Dinner Help

My son is getting married Monday, December 10 on the beach in Kahala/Waialae area of Oahu. I have offered to host the wedding dinner for about 20 people and am looking for suggestions.

The brides parents are coming from suburban Tokyo for the event...the grooms family are reasonably adventurous eaters from LA.

I am thinking $50-$75 per person food and drink (not heavy drinkers and no need for expensive wines).

So...good food in an island elegant (not stuffy) setting is what I am looking for.

Unfortunately, I am a bit out of touch with the Honolulu food scene since I haven't been back since graduating from UH in 1972!

Thanks,
Wayne

Mama's Fish House 2007

I have been going to Mama''s at least once a year for the last 16 years and I am sorry to say I have dined my last there.

It has expanded again...into the patio and bar area and it has finally outgrown itself. The food has always been reliably good at Mama's, never stellar but solid quality. The draw for me is the locale. I have always waited for a window table because that is the only reason to pay the $100 plus a person to eat there.

Now, even waiting for a table (formerly a pleasant experience in the airy entry/bar) is an ordeal.

All good things must come to an end, I suppose, but it is disappointing to see a beloved place drown in its own greed.
