Sweden: Stockholm & Umea
Hi onlydon,
I'm also headed to Stockholm shortly. I'm looking for cheaper eats, and/or something that shouldn't be missed (streetfood/snacks/pastries/cheeses... anything really!)
Thanks in advance!
ISO Delerium Rode (Red) in Holland (AMS, DH, Rotterdam, Utrecht)
I tried Delerium Rode once in Brussels and fell in love. Does anyone know where they might sell it in the Netherlands? I'm open to suggestions of bars and retail outlets.... anything really! Thanks in advance.
Restaurants in the Hague, NL
I agree with Ming Dynasty. But you do need a Cantonese speaker - or at least know how to order from seeing a picture, as they have a helpful photo menu as well. I recommend the egg tofu/asparagus/egg white/seafood dish, and fresh steamed oysters with vermicelli, garlic and green onions, and their buddha's delight noodle for pescatarians, and if you like fried noodles, they do a solid Singapore fried noodle as well.
Rotterdam Eats
Hi Juniper! Thanks so much for this list. It's great to have recommendations from a fellow Torontonian.
I live in The Hague and I wish I could give a comparable list but unfortunately, there hasn't been much to write about. Because of demand (low demand - eating out isn't huge in Dutch culture, nor is is trying new foods) and supply (stagnant incoming immigration), ethnic food of all sorts (other than Turkish/Moroccan) is expensive and of low quality, when compared to what's on offer back home. And don't get me started on Dutch/European restaurants in The NL...
There is one exception: Ming Dynasty, near Central Station serves decent (even by downtown Toronto standards) Cantonese fare, at moderate prices. I recommend in particular the Egg Tofu with Asparagus and Seafood in Egg Whites, and the fresh steamed oysters with ginger/green onion/garlic and vermicelli.
I'll have to go check out your recommendations in Rotterdam, which is so near by. Thanks again for the detailed post!
A week in Belgium (suggestions please!)
Thanks so much atomeyes. I'll put it on the list too :)
Amsterdam - moderately-priced restaurant NOT closed for summer holidays?
I went to Eetcafe Vlaming yesterday and we had a really nice time. The young, lovely waitress was friendly, cheerful and so helpful, offering advice on where to go for good sandwiches and live in Amsterdam. My friend and I had the vegetarian option (risotto croquette, with roasted vegetables stuffed with goat cheese or Gouda... hot, very tasty, and satisfying), and the daily salad (beautiful butter lettuce, a tangy creamy dressing, big bacon bits, chicken, avocado and tomato... really nice). It was reasonably priced, with our mains around 14-15 euros, and wine at 3.25 to 5 euro per glass. I'd go back.

Thanks so much Klary. I love macarons (good ones, that is) and I'll have to give del Rey a shot!

atomeyes, do you have suggestions for Antwerp? I'm headed there in a couple of weeks and would appreciate some interesting, affordable suggestions. Cheers!
Amsterdam - moderately-priced restaurant NOT closed for summer holidays?
Thanks Kat! I'm putting it on the list. Has anyone been to Eet Cafe Vlaming?
Amsterdam - moderately-priced restaurant NOT closed for summer holidays?
Balthazar's Keuken, Gartine, and a couple of other places I've searched are shuttered until late August. A girlfriend is visiting from Canada and we're going to Amsterdam for a day. I need to take her somewhere delicious.
We're both vegheads/pescatarians, adventurous and on a limited budget. We're looking for somewhere central (Jordaan, the 9 streets... )
Bedankt, in advance!
Good restaurant near Pearson?
Hi xrestogal, I've eaten at the Grand a number of times for dim sum over the last couple of years. Enjoy!
Khao San Road Review
Hi SWS, totally in agreement with you there. The sauce is phenomenal. And going forward I'll ask for my pad Thai "Thai Spicy"...
Khao San Road Review
Have also been recently and loved the yellow curry beef. Great spicing, many layered flavours, perfect meat and potatoes.
Also enjoyed the squash fritters, although I wouldn't say they're a revelation. It's deep-fried squash, people: of course it's tasty!
Was underwhelmed by the pad thai. I'd tried this dish out during one of the trial dinners pre-opening, and I loved it! It was spicier, and just more fragrant. Not sure what they changed but perhaps they're still working out kinks.
I'll go back for sure. The curry and the tasty fritters warrant making this gem a Regular place on my roster.

I'd heartily recommend Grand Chinese Cuisine, for its creative and delicious dim sum (I haven't been to dinner there and the reviews on this board are less positive). It's at the Doubletree Hilton. The rice roll with cod, grand scallop dumpling, baked cod pastry and green bean jelly dessert are consistently delicious.

Sushi in the Annex
Thought not in the annex, for the closest sushi, I'd add a second vote for Yuzu. And the fish at Japango is still way above average for the city. Also not in the Annex.
Went to Sushi Couture last night. I had the chirashi sushi, which is an assortment of the freshest fish, some seared, some raw and tamago arranged on a bed of sushi rice. It was $13.99 with soup and salad and I'd say it was worth the price. I've had better but at higher prices (the most recent example being Japango)

best burgers in T.O.
Have to disagree re BQM. On a friend's recommendation for the burgers and onion rings, I went one night and ordered a burger + rings combo. With a coke, it came out to something ridiculous like $18. WTF. I got it to go, as I live a few minutes away.
The worst part is that the burger was meh. It was beefy, but really not worth the cash. AND they gave us fries (too oily, all stuck together) instead of the onion rings. I will not be going back.
Vegetarians - or those (like me) just leaning that way - which restaurants are best??
Hi trane. I was disagreeing with your characterization of Fressen as "truly satisfying", intended or not, as michelleTO pointed out.
Some good suggestions on this page. I'd second recommendations for Tabule.

Went to Fressen a week ago and have to respectfully disagree. Everything but the Moroccan stew was bland, or oversalted. Incredibly small portions. Moroccan stew was nice enough but I make a comparable version myself.

Canton Chilli Restaurant
Bump. Anyone else been and able to review? I don't know of any other Chinese/Indian food in the core/Chinatown.... so it would be great if this place was decent!
Suggestions for dinner near Hilton (Queen/University) - cosy, cheap and cheerful?
Hi BlueGoo - thanks for reporting back. Where is your go-to place for saag paneer?
Suggestions for dinner near Hilton (Queen/University) - cosy, cheap and cheerful?
Yuzu is definitely reasonably and moderately priced for downtown Toronto, agreed, phoenikia. It is also quite bright -- and definitely, the servers are cheerful.

I second Trimurtri and Queen Mother. As much as I like Yuzu for delicious sushi and fresh fish, I wouldn't call it cheap, or particularly cheerful (very minimalist, modern, bordering on cold design)

Frank's Kitchen
First, I think prices have gone up about $1 across the board since the prices quoted here and in The National Post article.
I went to dinner here with a friend last week and I was pretty disappointed on a number of fronts.
We ordered the lobster ravioli, the elk and foie gras, and the chocolate souffle cake.
The good: the epi baguette and brioche in the bread basket were delicious! perfect little buns and accompanied by a delicious olive tapenade. The amuses were also very much enjoyed -- the shooter of a creamy potato/green veg soup was particularly luscious and lip smacking. Beautiful flavour, not overwhelmingly creamy, well salted. We also enjoyed the $34 bottle of Patriarche pinot noir (we dont' know much about wine - but it was clean, and just dry enough, and also $34. ha.)
The not-so-good: the lobster ravioli ($19) was very pedestrian. pasta was a bit thick, the filling tasted of haddock more than lobster (and the lobster was overcooked), and the tomato broth was kind of bland. The elk wrapped in foie gras and truffles ($30!) was the biggest disappointment. It was overcooked (slightly pink in the middle only) and as a result, tough and dry. The foie gras wrapping was tasteless though creamy. And there was no hint of the advertised truffle.
And finally, the chocolate souffle cake had no elements of a souffle. It was a cake. Basically your flourless chocolate cake with molten innards. It was good, but ... poorly described.
Service was enthusiastic and knowledgeable.
Yet another "mid-range" (how is this mid-range?!) Toronto restaurant that I regret spending my hard-earned cash at. Harumph.

After holiday excess, where do you like to go? And what do you order?
Happy new year phoenikia! I haven't been to the Yonge/Eg Hosu in ages so I can't make a comparison, unfortunately.
Honestly, re the Hwae Dup Bap, the fish isn't the best quality (i.e., pretty tasteless, but reasonably fresh). For what I'm paying, I won't complain. It's a bowl full of plenty of protein, whole grains, and made tasty with korean hot sauce and crunchy veggies. Plus you get the regular banchan side dishes. Better for you than your regular fast food, which is what I'd put it on par with.
After holiday excess, where do you like to go? And what do you order?
Hi phoenikia -- unfortunately only Hosu has brown rice on offer (although I suggested to the server yesterday at Ka Chi that they could also consider using brown rice)
The only two things I order at Hosu are the tofu stew and the Hwae Dup Bap, both with brown rice.
I agree with your comments on coconut milk, phoenikia. Everything in moderation...

Tom yum is pretty healthy and as far as I know, doesn't use any coconut milk. Tom kha soup, however, does require coconut milk.
I like going for soon dobu and/or chirashi, preferably with brown rice if available (Buk Chang Dong Soon Tofu, Ka Chi, Hosu... cheap standbys). Some of the salad bowls at Fresh (esp. the Macro greens, with dressing on the side) are decent.
