Where are you going for S Jersey Restaurant week?
Sunday brunch at the Tortilla Press is one of my favorite things in Collingswood. Chorizo+eggs=great way to start the day. =)
Where are you going for S Jersey Restaurant week?
I'm new to Collingswood, so this is my first South Jersey Restaurant week (March 9-15 this year, it's been extended one day to include Saturday the 15th.) Perusing the menus online, I really liked the options at Anthony's in Haddon Heights. Do you have plans, recommendations, or anecdotes to share about restaurant week? Here's the index of restaurants participating this year:

Places to eat before we expatriate [Moved from Mid-Atlantic board]
I'm so glad you chimed in here! I've followed your recommendations before and you've never led me astray. =)
The words "Amish hot pretzels" immediately set my husband to mapquesting ... the trip is planned!
Cippoli Cannoli should have been on that list of favorite places--can't believe I forgot it! Your description of the creampuffery had the same impact on me that the pretzels had on my husband ... we'll definitely be checking that out, too.
Thank you again!

That's the one! My husband and I absolutely love it, and it would be great to see it getting more business. Really simple authentic Mexican comfort food; I usually get the fresh guacamole, a chicken taco with cilantro and onion, a corn tamale and a Coke (real sugar!) or a Tamarindo Jarrito.
Here's a thread about it: http://www.chowhound.com/topics/362540

I like a long to-do list. =) We've decided to have a local adventure every weekend until we leave ... not involving eating out every time, but fairly often. Thank you for recommending Alisa Cafe! It looks like a good place (best duck ... I'm there!) and we're looking forward to checking it out.

A good hot chocolate sounds perfect right now. =)
We love food festivals ... got to go to a couple good ones when we lived in Texas. We were sad to miss the Greek Festival last year, but this year we'll be sure to catch it!
Thanks!
Places to eat before we expatriate [Moved from Mid-Atlantic board]
My husband and I are moving to Slovakia in July and we're not sure when we'll be back ... we're very excited but also a little bummed about all the good stuff we're leaving. We're making big to-do lists, including a to-eat list with favorite restaurants. We'd like to include some places where we haven't been but really should go to before we leave the country. Any recommendations? We live in Collingswood and work/go to school in Philly.
Here are our favorite places:
1. Oh Yoko in Cherry Hill
2. Taco House in Pennsauken
3. Cafe Antonio II in Collingswood (for pizza)
4. McMillan's Bakery in Collingswood (for donuts)
5. Everything we've ever experienced in the Reading Terminal Market
6. Random snacking in Chinatown
We love casual, relatively inexpensive authentic places with amazing food--all cuisines welcome. We'd be willing to spend a little more money than usual for a really special experience.
Thanks in advance for your input!
Taco House on RT 70 in NJ (Cherry Hill/Camden area)
Also, they've recently done some nice remodeling ... moving the cold case to free up more seating space, for example. Wonderful comfort food in a comfortable place.
What sort of salad to go with gorgonzola risotto cakes?
I like pairing gorgonzola with pears and strawberries--a fairly standard combo, but great, and both go well in salad. Strawberry and spinach salad is a lovely summer thing.
Celebratory eating in PA and NJ?
We are huge fans of casual and inexpensive Vietnamese ... it's something we've missed since we left Houston. Thanks!
Share your favorite rather simple dinner recipe
Great question! I'm going to keep checking this post to pick up some ideas, too.
My husband makes fantastic fish tacos--the basic recipe is pretty simple and quick, but you can get fancy if you're in the mood. It is basically breaded, fried fish (something white like tilapia or flounder), with remoulade, and finely shredded red cabbage on soft flour or corn tortillas. If you've got picked onions and cilantro on hand that's good too, but the basic fried fish, remoulade, cabbage and tortilla is great.
You cut the fish in nuggets or strips, then dredge in flour (seasoned with salt and pepper), egg (seasoned with salt and pepper), and then breadcrumbs (panko, matzoh meal, or plain breadcrumbs, seasoned with oregano, pepper, and maybe basil... don't use Italian flavor breadcrumbs, though.) Deep fry or bake until crispy and golden brown.
You can make your own remoulade, but we've found that Thousand Island or Russian dressing works just as well and makes it a much less complicated preparation. If you feel like getting complicated, though, here's the remoulade recipe we use:
Remoulade Sauce:
1 cup mayonnaise
1 tablespoon capers, minced
1 cornichon, minced
1 or 2 anchovies, minced
1 shallot, minced
1 teaspoon minced fresh chives
2 teaspoons minced fresh parsley leaves
2 teaspoons ketchup
Mix to combine... we usually just pulse the capers, cornichons, anchovies, and shallot in a little food processor then add everything else.
Sauerkraut?

Glad to help! Cheddar Cornbread Mini-Muffins sound delicious. =)

I'd knock it down to 350 or 375 and start checking them at 15 minutes (they might go to 20).
Celebratory eating in PA and NJ?
Thank you for these recommendations! After my exile in Connecticut, I am so ready for some good Vietnamese food. Thanks also for the good first anniversary wishes--congrats to you "first years" too!
Celebratory eating in PA and NJ?
Thank you! All these suggestions sound like places we'd enjoy--especially the trip to the Italian Market! And it's been a long time since I've had a good brunch; all the decent brunch places in New Haven are lines-out-the-door on the weekends.
Our first romantic date was at a Japanese-French fusion place in Michigan, an experience we somewhat replicated at a similar restaurant in Houston the night we got engaged. Are any of your favorite Philly spots Japanese-French fusion?
Celebratory eating in PA and NJ?
After two years apart while I've been in grad school, I'm finally moving from Connecticut to join my husband in Collingswood, NJ. We're planning on celebrating with vacation from August 7-14, staying close to home but seeing the sights (and eating the good eats) in and around Philly, Collingswood and Sea Isle City (where we'll stay for about 5 days of our vacation.) We have adventurous palates, a limited budget, and a good chunk of time to see and do some fun stuff. We are willing to drive for food, especially if it coincides with a neat place or local event. We've done some research, but suggestions for things to do, places to visit, and especially places to eat are most welcome. We will celebrate our first wedding anniversary on August 12 in Sea Isle, so any recommendations for romance-ready Jersey shore restaurants would be welcome, too!
What things do you add to your oatmeal to make it interesting?
Definitely craving oatmeal now. My standby is pretty simple: chopped dates added while the oatmeal's still cooking so they get all gushy. No need for any additional sugar. It's not very summery, but very comforting on cold mornings.
