Elevage "pop up" in Tampa Oct 15 -19

Everyone should keep in mind that this is not a true pop up, it's more of a dress rehearsal. Therefore, it seems to me that uneven execution would be somewhat excusable. I couldn't make it to Sidebern's this week, but I'm not going to judge Elevage's food on the basis of reviews of this "pop up".

Thanks for the thread, though, Telstar. This board never has the latest information any more.

Edison (Tampa)

Sorry, I don't get these accolades for Edison. By "consistent", you must mean that entrees are consistently disappointing; by " a bit pricey", you must mean that that disappointing $30+ entree would not have been out of place at Denny's, only with a much lower price tag.

Look, my smoked clam chowder was wonderful, but expensive at $14; my gnocchi were greasy, albeit admirably airy, but the sea urchin that I presume explained the $19 price tag was nearly imperceptible; and the less said about the (overcooked, oversalted) cornflake-crusted fish, served with unseasoned raw carrot slaw, the better. The other two entrees at our table were merely so-so. When I told the waitress, politely, that the fish was overcooked and generally not great, she said she could send a manager over but it would be a while as he was busy. Uh, no thanks, got a concert to get to.

The wine and beer lists were great, IMO, and not overpriced.

Will we go back? Probably, because the ambition is interesting. But I can't recommend the place.

One dinner at Datz -- what are their specialties?

OK, andy, I get it. Your cuisine reigns supreme. I'll leave Chowhound to you.

Yep, you are. And discerning.

Is this how you want to treat a dissenting voice on Chowhound? Ever wonder why there's no one posting about Tampa any more? If I have to put up with your personal insults when I disagree with you, I won't either.

Have fun, Lou, and please let us know how Datz goes for you. It's waaay better than Toojay's, and I doubt you'll be seriously disappointed. If you are, you can drown your sorrows in Frenchy's bisque! (JK)

CFishman, I make a distinction between a dish that is poorly executed--overcooked, undercooked, that kind of thing--and a dish that I just don't find successful. I hope you won't think I'm splitting hairs, but I don't have problems with the execution at The Refinery. A while ago I myself posted about overcooked entrees and the like, but IME they fixed all that and it's been smooth sailing ever since. There have certainly been dishes I wouldn't order again, because the flavor and/or textural combinations just didn't work for me, but I enjoyed them once for their creativity. Believe me, if something is actively wrong, I have no trouble sending it back. In fact, I did send a fish dish back once because it was virtually raw--they fixed it quickly and politely and all was well. But I also had to send a dish back at Pane Rustica once because the rice was crunchy. I don't consider a very rare error to be a deal breaker if it's handled well.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree, andy, because I've never had a bad meal there, and we go once a week!. Some dishes are more successful than others, but I think that's what comes with creativity: not every flavor profile will please, not every combination will really work. Service is always excellent, the servers are knowledgeable, and the food, in my view, anyway, is always somewhere between Yummy and Wow.

As for the James Beard nods, your reply stymies me: what would impress you more than the opinions of actual diners?? (She asks on Chownhound)

Oh, and one more thing, the "market" at Datz is teeny, tiny--nothing like Zingerman's, not even a ,little!

If your boss raved about it, I understand why you want to go, but I agree with the other two posts, it's not really all that. The menu looks good, yes, but...well, it's just not all that. I agree with all the ideas here, and would like to add The Refinery, which is more like the Ravenous Pig in its ambition and creativity, and also has a couple of James Beard nominations under its belt. I would rank my suggestions this way: The Refinery, Pane Rustica (very good for lunch, excellent for dinner), Boca (third only because, like ccat3, I've only been once). Haven't been to Edison, but the chef is a local celeb and it's getting good word of mouth.

cocktails/appetizers downtown Tampa

I suggest Fly, which has great cocktails and small plates, and outdoor (as well as indoor!) seating. It's not along the river, though, it's about 2-3 blocks from the Straz on Franklin.

If you really want to sit by the river, the Straz serves dinner and drinks both indoors and on its terrace.

2 days and 2 nights in Tampa – Suggestions Please!

I agree, solid choices! I would add another half-dozen or so, lol, but your list looks great as it is. (I am not familiar with the West Tampa Sandwich Shop. If it is a lot like Aguila I might suggest Pinky's instead for a different kind of place, but this is just a quibble.) Enjoy!

Best thin crust NON-NY Pizza in Tampa Bay

Dude, you keep asking the same question and insulting the pizza most people around here like enough to recommend! Maybe the thing you're looking for doesn't exist?
Btw, what they call pizza in the midwest is a cracker covered in thick cheese to my palate...

Can you take home bottles of wine at Bern's??

Also correct, especially when it comes to the rarer and older vintages. Just go to Bern's a half-a-dozen times and order one of those beauties each time...I can think of a worse solution!

Can you take home bottles of wine at Bern's??

Anything you buy at the restaurant must be opened, but you can take home leftovers. They recork the bottle and put it in a sealed plastic bag, as I recall. But if you want half a dozen bottles, contact the wine shop sunshine links to, it's about a block down Howard from Bern's, attached to Sidebern's.

Mise en Place - Tampa

I'm glad you had a good experience. I was underwhelmed by the food--some things were very good, others were poorly executed--but it's one of the few places you can go in Tampa for top-notch ambience and service without a three-ring circus (Bern's, I'm looking at you).

Costco & Trader Joe's Arrive in Sarasota. What food to buy/avoid?

TJ's has a lot of prepared foods, which some people avoid. I find it to be of higher quality and less unhealthful than most prepared food, but it is what it is. It's an unusual store, so sure, opinion is polarized.

Costco & Trader Joe's Arrive in Sarasota. What food to buy/avoid?

Sep. 7, for those too lazy to Google :-)

OK, here's what I crave from TJ's: snacks! Nuts, dried fruit, rice crackers, wasabi peas, sesame sticks, crackers, pita chips, cookies, chocolates and chocolate-covered things, most made by TJ's but some imported, all better (natural, some organic) and way cheaper than at my local grocer/health food store. I also buy certain jams, whole-wheat couscous, and I like all the flavors of hummus and similar dips (also all-natural, some organic). I rarely have the chance to buy fresh food at TJ's, so am less familiar with cheeses and such; rarely could buy frozen, so am interested to see what's available, if it's all-natural, but prepared food is prepared food. Was never a fan of their baked goods. Coffees and teas are decent for the prices, which are low. Ditto wines.

They have really good canvas--real cotton canvas--tote bags, too, in which to haul home the booty.

Tampa: Asia(n) Cafe on Dale Mabry south of Gandy?

I drove down Dale Mabry south of Gandy recently and noticed Golden Orchid, my fave Thai restaurant in the area, is gone--bummer! The owner is a sweetheart and I wish her and her mother well in any future ventures. In its place I see a sign for Asia or Asian Cafe--anyone know any details about it?

Where to Eat in Lakeland...or Should We Just Drive to Orlando?

Bosphorous is on my list for our next visit to Lakeland.

We had a good dinner at La Porta Rossa last weekend--not great, a bit overpriced, but excellent service, a nice wine list, lovely desserts. (Avoid the gnocchi.)
Its sister restaurant, The Red Door Market, which is also on my list, looks more casual; it was packed on Saturday night, surely a good sign.

Base Camp: The Don (St. Pete Beach)

Thanks so much, julie and joan, these are great ideas! We've heard about Middle Grounds for years, so maybe we'll finally make it over there. And we're already booked for the Sea Porch one night. As for the other places, they ALL sound good--how many meals can we eat in 2 1/2 days??

Base Camp: The Don (St. Pete Beach)

I know I've been absent from this board for a bit (lurking, actually), but I'm hoping y'all will overlook that and help me out anyway with a locals question...

SO and I are taking a long weekend break at the Don over Memorial Day. We live in Tampa, but spend woefully little time at the beach or in St. Pete. So--I'm looking for ideas for breakfast, lunch and dinner for a couple of locals who still don't know their way around over there.

Drinks and wine are a major plus; neither of us eats meat, but seafood is great; any cuisine is also great, exotic and spicy are welcome. I've heard the brunch at the Don is a must--is it? I think we'd like at least one "nice" dinner, but otherwise, fanciness is not necessary.

I look forward to your thoughts, thank you!

Tampa recommendatons please (Researched!!)

The allegations I have heard include not paying servers and vendors, and I absolutely do not want to support a chef who treats her staff and other businesses in the community poorly. Do I know these allegations to be true? No. But I have heard enough from good enough sources to believe they cannot all be false. So it's my decision to miss out on KB. I would not try to convince anyone else to do so; it's my call.

Decent casual restaurant near Tampa airport?

I agree. You could do worse than Ocean Prime or Roy's, both nearby, both consistently good, but you could also do much better if you're willing to drive a short distance. Is there something you're craving? (Stone crabs are in season...)

We have reservations, but I am thinking about canceling them. The bad press about Pierola's questionable business practices, together with lukewarm reports about KB4, are making me think twice.

Tampa recommendatons please (Researched!!)

Bummer. She'd better be careful. Tampa's a small town, and even a culinary genius like Jeannie shouldn't burn too many bridges.

We have reservations for next week. I was put off by the hagiography surrounding her, but realized that that's unfair and was finally convinced by way too many great reviews of previous KB popups to give it a go. We shall see!

Xmas Eve Showdown- China Yuan or Yummy House?

Yes, it's been discussed, but I'd like to revisit the question, b/c I do think the "occasion" nature of the 24th warrants it.
I tend to think that China Yuan does better with meat dishes, and Yummy House with seafood, tofu and veg. I realize that this is a bit too general, but I don't eat meat and while I read a lot of beef dishes at CY being praised here, I have always preferred YH. So that became my theory!
So I'd pick YH, but which location?? There's the rub...

An afternoon in Tampa?

I think a walk around Hyde Park would be lovely, too. One could have a nice lunch at Sophie's (limited to soup/salad/quiche/sandwiches), The Wine Exchange or Timpano. None are as iconic as The Columbia, but they're good, and the restored bungalows in the neighborhood, the mature trees, and Bayshore Boulevard make for very pleasant strolling.

Ybor is unique, so I hesitate to say anything against it; it's certainly redolent of Old Tampa. But the trashy bar quotient is high.
