New Fish and Chips Joint in Brighton Center

Large Filet, with one piece per order that was more than enough. Think batter, but it wasn't as crispy as usually would be the case.

New Fish and Chips Joint in Brighton Center

It's called the Battery and is on Washington Street across from Boca Grande. It seems to be Irish-owned and is mainly a take-out joint. I think that a lot of money was put into it, as the space, a former pizza joint, has been completely transformed.

I tried the fish last night, but they were out of chips and tarter. They substituted a "potato pie" which was essentially fried mashed potatoes with cheese and onions. The fish was very fresh and tasty, but the skin was not removed for some reason. Service was very slow, but friendly. I think it was the first night, so I will definitely try it again in a few weeks when they work out the kinks.

BBQ South of Boston

I'm heading down to a show in Mansfield this weekend, and I am wondering if there are any good bbq joints off of 95 that would be on the way from Boston. Any suggestions are very welcome.

Thanks!

Casual Restuarant in Charlotte

I'm going to be in Charlotte in a few weeks and need to find a place to eat on the Friday night that I will be there. I'm looking for something relatively casual and reasonably priced. I would rather a place with Southern influences than something that is ethnic. It also should be within the updown/downtown area.

Thanks for the help!

Billtmore (Newton Upper Falls) Review

I decided to check out this place tonight because I figured that it would have the Red Sox game and pretty decent food.

I parked in the liquor store parking lot across the street, because there was no on-street parking.

There were people waiting outside to be seated, and the bar was packed. I ordered a Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA (good East Coast IPA, similar to Smutty IPA and Wachusett IPA) and waited for a stool at the bar. After about five minutes, some people stood up and took their seats in the restuarant area, and I took their spot at the bar. There was a very large HDTV in the corner, for me to watch the game.

There were several specials on a blackboard behind the bar. Listed were Fried Artichokes for $3, Tomato & Mozzarella Sandwich for $4, and 2 Fenway Franks and a PBR for $5. Additionally, the bartender told me about a swordfish entree special.

I ordered the Fried Artichokes as an appetizer. The fried artichokes were scrumptious. They were well-fried in a beer batter and served with a creamy sauce. The freshness of the artichokes and the simplicy of the preparation really shined.

For my main dish, I ordered the fettucine, which cost $14. It was served in a creamy pesto with fava beans, cherry tomatoes, sweet corn, water chestnuts, and carrots. The noodles were quite al dente, but I like them that way. The sauce was thin and there was a lot of it sitting at the bottom of the pasta bowl, so I added some freshly ground salt and pepper. The corn was clearly frozen, but its texture and sweetness still shined in the dish. The carrots and chestnuts were both very thinly sliced, which worked well in the dish. The tomatoes were whole and very hot, and I am glad I did not burn the inside of my mouth. The beans were rare and a bit out of place in the dish. It was all served with a delcious piece of grilled baquette. On the whole, I appreciated the creativity of the dish, but it was not great. However, for an American bistro, it did the trick, and was definitely something interesting to try. I would rates its creativity an 8 and its execution a 6.

The bartender was a youngish girl, 20 maybe, and good looking. She was very busy making drinks alone for the whole restaurant, but I appreciated the way she checked in with me about three minutes after serving both the app and the entree.

The bill for the fried artichokes app, the fettucine, and two Dogfish 60 Min IPAs was $28.

Overall it was a good experice, although definitely not great.

Where should I eat tonight...MetroWest

Ty for the suggestion. I wasn't really in the mood for bbq, and decided to go to the Biltmore in Newton, which is about 10-12 mins from where I am. I will post a review.

Where should I eat tonight...MetroWest

I am looking for a place to eat tonight alone within 15-20 minutes of South Natick. That distance would include Framingham, Needham/Newton Upper Falls, and perhaps Waltham. I am looking for a place where I can sit at the bar and have good food. A tv for the sox game is preferable. Any suggestions?
