Father's Day lunch?

I'm looking to take my large family (15+ people) out for a nice Father's Day lunch this Sunday... however, with a big family there are TOO MANY food preferences/dislikes. My grandparents are extremely finicky about what foods they will eat. They generally want to stick to Asian cuisine or avoid food that has rich butter or milk-type sauces. They prefer dim sum or sushi. On the flip side, the kids are tired of eating dim sum and sushi whenever we go out to eat. We ate at a Korean BBQ on Mother's Day and it was expensive and not filling enough for some people. This is really becoming mission impossible... please help?!? Looking for Chandler/Tempe/Mesa locations. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

2 week visit to Phoenix-- must eats?

I've been in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere in Asia for the past year and am heading back to the valley for a couple of weeks before heading back for work... I want to hit up all of the international and comfort foods in Phoenix, specifically the Tempe/Chandler/Gilbert areas. Please give me your suggestions for must-eats. Thanks!

shao long bao- phoenix?

does anyone know where i can get shao long bao in the valley-- preferably east valley? since shanghai palace has transformed into tottie's asian fusion, they no longer serve dim sum, and i have such a craving for some good steamed soup buns! thanks.

Mini Pho Tour in and around Chandler, AZ

since you did a tour around chandler, az...

i noticed a new restaurant called pho hai san ("seafood pho") opened up on ray and kyrene, where the wang's chinese food restaurant used to be... haven't ventured in yet... anyone know about the merit of this place?

Brunch in the Scottsdale/Phoenix/Tempe area?

a charming place is house of tricks in tempe: http://www.houseoftricks.com/.

don't know if it's as upscale as you'd like, but i think it'd make a wonderful wedding rehearsal meal location. good hope!

deer valley, az restaurants?

i'm in the east valley, but decided i wanted to make the long haul over to deer valley to see harry potter in imax projection. any notable lunch spots in that area? i'd prefer something less chain-y unless it's exceptionally good. thanks!

Pho Sapa (Tempe): I would have liked to review it

Wow, that's too bad-- I've really been looking forward to eating there. The broth for Pho takes a bit longer to make, but anticipating a Friday crowd should have put them on notice for making more. Yes, I think I'll wait awhile for them to get their staff under control and then go check it out. Thanks for the review!

Cold-Brewed Coffee-- PHX?

I read about this cold-brewed coffee on arizona-coffee.com recently, and now I have a sudden craving-- okay, I won't look to fill it right now since it's 11pm. But does anybody know of any local coffee shops that make a good cold brew? And what exactly is a toddy coffee or coffee toddy (not the alcoholic, hot toddy)? Thanks!

EV/PHX: need.scallops.

wonderful, thanks for all the suggestions! i'm going out for some scallops!

EV/PHX: need.scallops.

i went to shanghai palace today for lunch but didn't get the scallops. the pork chop noodle soup, shao long dumplings, and fried banana i had were yummy. i'll definitely have to go there again for scallops!

Mini Pho Tour in and around Chandler, AZ

i've tried most of those places and i definitely agree! i LOVE dragonfly, they are wonderful! the seafood pho and vietnamese coffee are delicious, the place is clean, and the servers are friendly and unintrusive. a pho sapa is opening near me on elliot & kyrene- wonder how that will measure up...

EV/PHX: need.scallops.

I've been craving scallops like mad and don't know where to go! I'll take them any style they come in, but they have to be well-prepared and fresh! Thanks!

Cheap E.V. Chinese takeout??

I remember Lin's-- apparently now with a name change and Sangrila in Mesa used to be pretty good back in the day. How about Wang's (Ray & Day St) or Wong's Place (Baseline & McClintock)? They certainly serve some authentic dishes, but Wang's at least serves the basic American-Chinese grub-- fried rice, chow mein/lo mein, orange chicken, sweet & sour, egg rolls, etc. There was this really great place on Baseline and Kyrene awhile back that had great food... but they closed it and the last I knew, the owner went to work for Panda Express. Grrr...

If you don't mind other Asian style food besides Chinese, why not get some pho at Saigon Pho or Dragonfly (Southern & Dobson) or Cyclo, or some Thai food at Swaddee Thai (Ray & Rural) or Yupha's Kitchen (Elliot and Rural)? Or for something really different, try Chino Bandido (Chandler & Dobson). You can't go wrong with good bad foods from two cultures!

If you discover anything new you like, please share!

Mieles(Tempe)?

i've only taken out from there, and i must have ignored all the signs! it does seem a bit dark and unfriendly though. i recommend trying the white pizza if you do end up trying it... gobs of mozzarella (not greasy though) and a buttery garlic scent that will stay on your hands for hours afterwards. the food makes up for the ambience, in my book. and maybe you can give the owners a friendly suggestion on changing their signs. good hope!

PLEAISSANT CROISSANTS BAKERY- TEMPE

If you're in the area, check this place out! And then either stay in store for a cup of delicious coffee or go two stores down to Bunna coffee-- best start to your day!

I've been frequenting this small bakery for years, and wanted to share the goodness with you. If you want croissants, this is the place to go. They have terrific breakfast and Lunch sandwiches too. I love to get a egg, veggie & cheese (your choice of american, cheddar, jalapeno jack, provolone, or swiss-- you can add your choice of meat as well) before I go to work. Allow some time as they're currently expanding to a new space and have two workers in store. I'm sure that will be remedied once they move to the bigger space (just 3-4 doors down).

However, P.Croissant is known for their filled croissants-- they serve at least 10-12 of the following flavors: almond, apple, apricot, bavarian cream, blueberry, blueberry cream cheese, cherry, chocolate chip, cinnamon, cinnamon apple, cinnamon raisin, cream cheese, chocolate bavarian cream, lemon, peanut butter, raspberry, raspberry cream cheese, strawberry, strawberry cream cheese. They are absolutely delectable-- a couple of my favorites are almond, strawberry cream cheese, and bavarian cream.

Review: Da Vang Restaurant - Phoenix (w/ photos!)

you have to try dragonfly's vietnamese cuisine in mesa-- nw corner of southern and dobson. i went there recently and the seafood pho i had was so fresh and the french drip coffee was amazing. great!

Chinese Bakery?

i don't know if you found the cocktail buns... usually they have them in the dim sum restaurants here... so great wall, jade palace, c-fu gourmet, etc.... they don't have them in bakeries here. but since you used to frequent the bakeries in san fran, i say go to asahi bakery like the others were saying... amazing asian style cakes, veggie and meat buns, etc... i know the owner well and love going there! everyone should try it!
