Creamy Carrot Casserole

I ever so slightly modified this recipe by chopping the garlic finely and then leaving it in the topping, creating magnificent garlic crispies throughout the panko.

ISO Malawi Tea in Los Angeles

I had a lovely Malawi Tea at a hotel in DC and am in search of loose leaves (or bags if that's all I can get) in Los Angeles. I've also checked the usual suspects online (Upton Tea etc) without success.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you!

Sticky, Gooey Monkey Bread at Home

Monkey bread is such a cinch to whip up; I can't imagine why anyone would need to buy it from the grocery store! :-P

Old fashions are great - but I want to know where the glass in the photo came from! Beautiful!!!

Good Polish Food?

I third Polka! :-) It doesn't taste like my polish grandma's cooking, which was a little hard to get past. But once I stopped expecting it to taste differently, I was happy and enjoyed my pierogi!

Electric skillet-anyone using one? What do you make?

Alton Brown suggests using it for poaching (because you can set it to such a specific temperature). I got one for christmas, and can't wait to give it a try!

What products at Trader Joes to avoid?

I'm a HUGE TJ's fan, but didn't care for the canned clam chowder.

Best Homemade Food Gift

I made that recipe, and although the coating is delicious it did not stick to my cashews very well. Not sure what went wrong, but would be willing to try again.

your favorite way to use ground lamb?

When you say Greek Lasagna, I assume you mean Moussaka? If not, Tyler Florence has the BEST Moussaka recipe in the world at http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ty...

Do you ever choose the store (or generic) brand over the the national one?

I think it's all been said... but it all comes down to testing things out yourself. I find that store brands vary in quality in grocery stores, i.e. Albertson's Oatmeal vs. Ralphs. It just takes time to determine what you think tastes okay. I don't tend to worry about safety, just flavor. Trader Joes is usually a safe bet, however, I don't care for their canned clam chowder, everything else tends to be wonderful. Consumer reports had a really great article about store brands, and how they come about, interesting stuff!

If you like Square One, I recommend you try Alcove Cafe (and cheese shop) in Los Feliz.

What's your "secret ingredient?"

A pinch of cumin also adds a great, subtle smokiness to guacamole

What's your "secret ingredient?"

Nutmeg is a wonderful addition to alfredo sauce too!

To Rinse or Not to Rinse...Chicken

That's correct, do not rinse your chicken. Here's an extensive PDF to clarify...

Yes, We're Still On

I threw a party for my boyfriend's birthday, and oddly enough, the people who RSVPed Yes, didn't show, and those who didn't RSVP at all, did. Very odd, and we still had about the expected number of guests.

Dandelion Greens Flatware

I checked these out in person, and while they are gorgeous on screen, I'd just like to note that the etching is really shallow, and you can see the screen patten in the laser design. Be sure to stop by and check them out before ordering. I was also a little bothered that they didn't come in a protective box, but instead, tied together with twine.

Black Pepper Martini

sorry folks, I'm an also avid martini drinker, and although I excitedly made the syrup this afternoon, this martini is sort of gross. By gross, I mean it's pretty darn sweet, too sweet for me.

Good Polish Food?

Polka, in Glendale is good, often has a line outside. It's not quite what I grew up on, but the cozy atmosphere and friendly staff make it an enjoyable experience, just not my grandma's cooking! :-) The kielbasa has a nice flavor, but does not snap, and the pierogies have a very delicate dough, which is very nice. The prices have gone up over the years, so it's not exactly *cheap*.

carrots: sauces, dips, recipes? strange sauce or dip for veggies?

I love to make a wasabi-mayo to dip carrots (or any other veggies) in. Be sure to use a good and strong wasabi, and it will turn out great!

Corned Beef Novice...why so tough?

I think you might have the same slow cooker as me. Last year, I tried the same thing and after over 14 hours of cooking, the meat was still tough. I ended up transferring it all into a large stock pot and boiling it some more. That worked, the meat did become tender. My (and probably your) crock pot just didn't get hot enough, which may have been a result of too much water in the crock pot to efficiently heat.
