Dennis Foy - Lawrenceville Inn? Anyone been there?

My husband and I had dinner with some friends at the Lawrenceville Inn this past Saturday. The food was very good. Highlights included butternut squash soup, fettucini carbonara, grilled veal chop, salmon, apple tart and chocolate mousse. Portions of some of the dishes (like the salmon and scallops) were on the small side and my husband left the restaurant still feeling hungry. Two of the four rooms were open-one of the rooms shared space with the kitchen so you were basically eating a few feet away from the chef and kitchen staff. I prefered the other room away from the kitchen. The service was spotty. Our waitress was not as familiar with the menu as she should have been and had a hard time answering questions. We also had to request things like silverware, water and milk for the coffee several times before we actually got them. On the up side, we were there for almost 3 hours and never felt rushed. One final thought...the restaurant had only been open a week and I was surprised that no one such as the chef/owner/manager came over to greet us, see how our food was, etc. In fact, while going to the bathroom I slipped on the wet/slippery floor in front of the entire kichen staff and not a single person came to my aid or asked if I was ok. Not the best way to build a clientale.

Bia in Ocean Grove ~ Jersey

After reading these reviews my husband and I decided to go to Bia this past Saturday night. First, let me say that we really wanted to like this restaurant given the lack of good restaurants in our area. When we got to the restaurant we were escorted to a table for two--nice enough but when we sat down there was a rush of cold air from a vent under our table. When we asked to switch our table to a nearby empty table (also for 2) we were told that the restaurant was too crowded for us to change so we stayed at the drafty table. My mussel appetizer was very good but my husband's shrimp appetizer was cold. We then waited at least 45 minutes for our entrees. Our waiter apologized, saying that it was a very busy night for the kitchen. When we finally did get our entrees, my crab cakes were burnt (it seems that is how the chef prepares them as others have voiced the same complaint) and my husband's tuna was raw (even though he had specifically requested that it be prepared medium) and his vegetables were cold. We then spent 10 minutes trying get our waiter's attention who, after seeing us, scurried into the kitchen. We finally found another waiter and requested that the tuna be cooked as ordered. Once again, apologies we made, with an explanation that the kitchen was very busy. By the time my husband got his tuna back, we were no longer in the mood to eat so we skipped dessert (we had already been there over 2 hours) and went home. I would suggest skipping this restaurant altogether.

Casual in Cape May

I'm looking for a casual restaurant in Cape May where we can get a late lunch/early dinner (preferably seafood). We are stopping off there on the way home from Rehoboth Beach so we will not be dressed for anything too fancy.

Rehoboth Beach Restaurants (upscale)

I am going for a long weekend with my mom and sisters at the end of July and we are looking for some suggestions as we all love to eat really good food. Any thoughts on the following: Chez La Mer, Blue Moon, Eden, Espuma, Nage or Big Fish Grill? Any other suggestions. Thanks for the help!

Overrated in Monmouth County

Definitely Doris & Ed's. Always highly rated in Zagats but we had an awful meal there with awful service and it wasoverpriced to boot.

Any info on Brandl in Belmar?

I went there a couple of years ago and just didn't find it to be worth the money. Try Moonstruck or Matisse instead.

Whisper's

Its pretty good but in my opinion a little overrated and kind of pricey. The room is small and quaint--maybe a little drab. The menu never changes and they don't have lots of specials so I wouldn't go more than once or twice a year or you'll get tired of it very quickly! Try the lobster special.

Julia's in Atlantic Highlands

Thanks. We moved here from NYC a couple of years ago and have struggled to find good local places to eat. I actually like Italian food but have yet to find a really good one in the area (most are pretty awful!!) although "I Cavallini" is not bad.

Has anyone been to Julia's in Atlantic Highlands? I'm new to Chowhound so forgive me if this has been asked & answered recently.
