I hate myself for going to Harbour Sixty
magic...you are not alone. loved the service, the food and the desserts.
The Lobster Trap
yum........guess it depends on your expectations. fine, some here love starfish. great for them. i cannot comment as all negative comments regarding starfish seem to mysteriously dissapear. lobster trap has always worked for us though. so enjoy your next outing there. for those that are planning on going.........do not let the food snobs steer you away. food is decent, service is awesome and location is ideal.
The Lobster Trap
i have to agree with yum2mytum. my husband claims that the lobster trap is the best restaurant in toronto....and not just because of the food. he remembers family events being held there as well when he came from out of town. he says the service is the best in toronto (though i do not think it is the best, i have to admit it is pretty damn good). he says the seafod is the best (he is not much of a seafood eater, but he DOES know fresh from frozen) and it is interesting for visitors. we have had many out of town guest for dinner there as per his request and no one has ever disiked their meal.
yeah...............it's not the absolute standard for seafood...but it sure as hell beats red lobster. it also is fun for a family get together.
Good weekend breakfast/brunch in Markham/Scarborough?
what about "the wexford"?2072 Lawrence Avenue East
good value, good breakfast, great fresh squeezed juices...and chracter to spare
About Egg Rolls (again) in Toronto
golden king. scarborough. vp and st clair. amazing canadian chinese.
sultan of samosas...what the????
i would prefer to just go to a new place. i have a lead on a delicious samosa joint in scarborough...........just wanted to know if others have a had a gross experience lately. also wondering if quality control is a new issue?
sultan of samosas...what the????
so........
i love the sultan. never did me wrong........ever. but i was there last week and was really dissapointed. i bought a twelve pack of mixed. first bite of a lentil...........a big chunk o' salt, and i mean a BIG chunk. gross..threw it away, figured it was a mistake. the veggie ones had the addition of lima beans and chick peas. the chick peas were umm chickpeas. i love a good curried pea so could not complain, but the limas.........they were the extremely mealy, not tender, frozen variety and not a welcome addition. beef was great, as usual. the chicken was the worst though...so much cilantro i had to search for the chicken part.
has the sultan fallen off? did i just hit them on a bad day?
when pot roast goes horribly wrong....
no i do not normally use round but I do pot roast in a crock pot so I figured it would come out ok. guess i was wrong. another member suggested the bbq beef idea as well though which is an interesting idea.
when pot roast goes horribly wrong....
approximately how much did you add? one packet to a normal beef stew recipe?
when pot roast goes horribly wrong....
do you think this roast could survive medium to medium well done this way? my picky kids will not eat anything less then medium. the teriyaki sounds really good actually........do you just buy a marinade or do you you make your own? would love the recipe.
Good Irish-style brunch/breakfast?
diasagree. canned veg is a big part of most lower to middle class irish households for cost and conveinience reasons. and yes, HP is english but in Ireland they have brown sauce and it is very similar to HP but I said HP as you can get it in canada. i was speaking from my experience as a child lving in the UK including northern ireland. this is what we always had as a special breakfast...i guess the meal is differs by family.
Football fan-guy friendly veggie dish??
deep fried tempura veggies! brocolli, eggplant, zucchini, mushrooms and insert any yummy dip or serve well seasoned alone. perfect for picking at while watching the game.....you can do them in batches so you can take a break in between to socialize.
when pot roast goes horribly wrong....
I made pot roast last night and it was bad.....really, really bad. I can't understand it. I have a no fail recipe I have been using all my adult life. My family loves it. there are never leftovers.
I believe the culprit is round roast. I bought an extremely giant whole round that was to good of a deal to pass up on. I cut it into four roasts......froze the other three and made a pot roast last night. It was so dry and disgusting that I could not serve it. It breaks into a dry sawdust when you try to slice it. A pot roast.....dry?
So.......now I have a roast uneaten sitting in my fridge that I have no idea how to try and salvage it. I hate wasting food and can't bear to throw it away. I was thinking maybe I could try to break it up into really small peices and mix it with a gravy for shepherds pie, however I am concerned that it will be more of a saw dust pie. Any ideas?
Also..........I am not attempting a pot roast with the rest of the meat. What can I do with the rest of the meat I have frozen? I have about 10-12 pounds still in the freezer.
Good Irish-style brunch/breakfast?
a good fry.
lots of butter..on everything. everything fried in butter as well. lots of HP, fried blood pudding, sausage, fried potato bread, toast, fried tomatos, fried potato (either left over mashed or canned) bacon, beans........and sometimes a fried egg.
basically a heart attack....but in a delicious once a year kind of way. a christmas day breakfast for my family.
McVeigh's Pub Recs?
grubby? yes. it also depends on who your kind of people are. it's mostly locals and irish ex-pats looking for a chat, a snack and a beer. staff are great. i really like the place...but its definetly not bay street slick....which is probably why i like it so much.
"80's" Cuisine?
lean cuisine is definetly an 80s thing as is the boneless skinless chicken breast trend.
What do CHers consider GOOD service
yeah, this thread is great. as an interesting anecdote lending to this thread:
in my uni days for my first serving job i worked at a particularly questionable "restaurant" (read:booze can) as a bartender. it was the kind of place where the owner would "accidentally" order all the female uniforms too tight. i had a shift manager who had a strong dislike for unruly customers. his usual plan of action was to come running out of the kitchen and scream at them "don't you know you get a helluva lot more with sugar than with shit!!". usually followed by some other choice expletives if the customer continued to give lip.
was actually one of the best jobs of my life...so many good times.
What should I do with kale?
use any dried sausage if chorizo is not available. i use smoked itailian sausage all the time...works great, so does keilbassa. but fresh is not ideal...comes out too greasy...use dried or smoked. the kale is the best part of the soup...the sausage is just the flavouring.
What do CHers consider GOOD service
agree. that customer certainly seemed unreasonable and was probably downright rude to you. however...using tact and compromise a server should make the customer "feel" that they are always right or at least validated with their concern or objection. i know this is hard (i was a server many, many eons ago)....but it is a standard in the service industry.
What do CHers consider GOOD service
a polite and efficient host/hostess who sets my expectations appropriately as to when i will be seated, i do not blame the restaurant, server or host if i have to wait for an extended period of time. this is my own fault, i should have made reservations. i like a server who allows me to order everything at once if i have somewhere to go, or lets me linger and talk if i desire. and a server who makes suggestions for what to order, always give my condiments and silverware. thats about all i can think of.....oh and i tip 10% for bad service...and it goes up to 25 for really good. i also leave a thank you not on the bill if the service is great.
"80's" Cuisine?
not invented in the 80s but definetly trendy at the time: beef carpaccio, american style chicken teriyaki, pita bread or english muffin pizzas, chips and salsa, natchos, pita and hummus, bruchetta (again, american style), stirfry, souvlaki, pavlova, bagels with anything... omg..i could go on and on.
my daughter tells me NOW that's it's mulitcultural day tomorrow!
not to sure where you live but if you have a chinatown in your city....get thee to a chinese bbq restaurant for bbq pork. just have to slice it and you're done. i'd suggest making it yourself but it really needs to marinate for at least a day. chinese bbq pork tastes good with everything..........so nothing else needed and it's great served cold.
Secret Food Myths - Let the De-Bunking Begin!
yeah sounds delicious. pasturized or not........i'll pass on the manure and keep washing my schrooms.
Overly salty meat results in arrest [moved from Not About Food board]
cathy as per the scenario you described.......if my kids got oversalted burgers i'd hope that would put them off fast food. i would then hand them two peices of bread, a slice of cheese and perhaps a slice of ham, a couple of carrot sticks and pronounce it dinner.
big deal, the cop got an oversalted burger. lesson learned. fast food can be really gross.
Secret Food Myths - Let the De-Bunking Begin!
agree, i always wash mushrooms.........don't you know what those things are grown in!
Secret Food Myths - Let the De-Bunking Begin!
oops..one more. "never lift the lid of the crockpot while cooking"
not true............i have, on occaision, lifted the the lid.....just to see what will happen. nothing happens! it doesn't slow down the cooking time, nor does it make any difference in flavour or texture.
Secret Food Myths - Let the De-Bunking Begin!
what about washing meat first?
maybe its just me.......but my family never washed their meat before cooking. i feel cooking to the proper temperture kills any bacteria. my MIL? she freaks if i cook anything before washing, she feels that by not doing so will result in food poisoning. i dunno if its cultural or an age thing........maybe its even just her, or maybe its me?! but i don't wash meat....
If you had never eaten in Toronto before...
i second perigee and the peameal sandwich at the market.
for a cool night out........try little india at coxwell and gerrard. park your car, walk around, go into a sari shop, browse, enjoy, have a couple kingfisher beers on your way through. the buffets are alright...cheap, edible and different. the pakistani bbq can be downright fantastic sometimes, lahore tikka house has always been my favorite on the gerrard strip. there are many other south asian places in to........but the gerrard strip gives the best walkable experience.
World's Best Mustard? Please stake your claim.
no one has said french's yellow? on a deli turkey sammy or hot dog.........can't get any better than that!
Where to find chocolate cups in Toronto?
any chocolate shop should do this for you if you call ahead. some may even have these on hand. i like using meringue cups filled with berries and whipped cream. the PC ones are ok but you definetly need to let the berry mix sit in the cups for a couple of hours to soften the meringue. making either of these options at home is very easy though..........
