I'm sure many places will be fine, but give us an iea of price point and exactly where you'll be. OC is very big.
I live in OC and have a gig in Nashville, so kinda have that same question!
nashville, local style eating?

nashville, local style eating?
We live in Califonia, so have plenty of fancy whatever places to eat at home.
We will be in Nashville for Dec 31, Jan1 and leaving the night of Jan 2 2008. That leaves us all day New Year's day and most of Jan 2 to eat.
We want local food, BBQ places, breakfast, that kinda thing.. Casual or a step up please.
A NYE place also welcome.
some ideas ive gleamed:
JACK'S BAR-B-QUE
Rotier's - Nashville, TN
CANTRELL'S BAR-B-QUE
Prince's Hot Chicken Shack
Gerst Haus
Ideas? Comments on these/others for overall chracter?
We'll have a car, so out of town places are ok too.
Also wonder if things in general are open NY Day, as we have no plans whatsoever of what to do...

Franks Philadelphia in Costa Mesa
While I think it's tasty, I've eaten lots of cheesesteaks in Philly, and I'm not sure Franks is special enough to drive from LA for.
It's just a sandwich shop that has good cheeseteaks. Nothign like the experience of going to Pat or Genos..
costa mesa rut
All good suggestions so far, but have been to them all. :)
Please feel free to include medium cost restaurants too..
We seem to end up too often at Plums or Skosh Monahans and that Italian on 19th/Newport19th...Yard House is pretty good too.
costa mesa rut
We live in costa mesa (newport/harbor area)
Been here 15 years
We are stuck in a rut. always seem to go to the same places to eat.
I'm looking for hidden gems that even us locals may have overlooked.
cheap is great cos we eat too often.
CM or NB please
I hope there's some places we've driven by a thousand times and just never thought to try, or new hidden ones, but I think this will be a challenge as it seems like we've eaten everywhere, and it's all a bit tedious. :)
2 Days in Austin
we have this sat night, sunday and monday day in Austin.
looking for local food in old funky places
so we'd like off the wall breakfast places, BBQ, etc.
nothing corporate or chain like in any way please!
prefer low cost to anything fancy
we get too much fancy where we live and not enough funky
[i have a car and a map so PLEASE include an address or cross street please.]
In search of great steak in OC
many places!
what city? old school steakhouse or new fancy style?
costa mesa
I live in costa mesa. these places mentioned are all over the board as to *types* of places. they are all pretty good spots, but vary a lot from a simple sandwich shops to local restaurants to local bars to slightly fancy places on the water. it's hard to tell what your priorities are, so hard to narrow down these many suggestions...
the pier area in newprt beach is only 10 mins from where you'll be staying. Many of the places mentioned here in repiies are in easy walking distance of each other, so maybe thats your best bet. Sharkies, Beach Ball, Crab Cooker, The Stag, Rockin Baja Lobster, and Mutt Lynches are all right there. Blue Water is kinda on the way, and next door to The Cannery as are some others mentioned.
Out of the places mentioned:
Slightly upscale: Blue Water, The Cannery.
Gourmet food but casual: Plums, Haute Cakes
Bars/casual: most everything else
