Food-related volunteering [Toronto]

One of the challenges with The Stop is that they generally require daytime volunteers with the exception of people for one-of volunteering opportunities. I've been wanting to work with them for the past few years but couldn't make it work. They do great work though!

Pop-up garden centres in Toronto

I was there this weekend and they had started to put out some plants. I'd also strongly recommend Fiesta Gardens (aka the garden centre at Fiesta Farms). Not sure when it opens but it is always great for random stuff.

Looking for a one day cooking lesson in Normandy or Paris

I've heard good things about La Cuisine Paris. I recently took a baking class at Cook'n with Class but they also do market tours. Class size was small but a tad bit less hands on than I had anticipated.

Grocery cost in Paris

I did the NYU study abroad program about 10 (yikes!) years ago. Coming from a large city (Toronto) and having lived in New York I didn't find grocery shopping in Paris to be particularly expensive. I lived in an apartment in the 16th with a kitchenette (very small fridge, hot plate, toaster oven) and for the most part didn't cook a lot of meat and certainly couldn't do anything requiring an oven.

Your best bet would be to scope out some of the online sites for supermarkets and check the flyers if they have them. I would usually shop at Casino, Franprix or Monoprix.

Best of luck!

Where can I find beef bung or other natural sausage casings in Toronto?

Try calling The Healthy Butcher. They don't keep casings out but they usually have casings in the back. I've never looked for beef bung so can't comment on that specifically.

Bulk Barn - Yonge/College

I checked it out today. I normally go to the Bulk Barn at Vic Park/Eglinton and found this location had a better overall selection. Particularly in the spice section they had loads of spices that I don't normally see in the Scarborough location.

With regards to the WS option. When I checked during the summer all of the curing salts had an expiration date of Nov/Dec. So be sure to check expiration dates!

Bass Pro Shop at Vaughan Mills has it and it is cheap. William Sonoma also carries it but is expensive for a small quantity (maybe $14-18 a jar... can't remember).

Best potato selection in the GTA?

I think it would be a good idea to head to one of the farmer's markets (Brickworks or Wychwood Barns are good bets). Most of the supermarkets have pretty generic offerings when it comes to potatoes.

I'm a fan of Ritz Caribbean food on Yonge just north of College on the west side. Lunch specials are $4.99. I only get the jerk chicken. More of a takeout spot but they do have a decent number of seats.

Best Roti?

I used to get roti from their Dufferin Mall spot when I was a kid and have been following them around ever since! The food is still good and they run a really good business.

I can never find a roti in the city that I like as much as I like Island Foods.

Goody’s Diner – Finally an Ontario candidate for Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives… and it’s in Scarborough

Mostly taste, I couldn't get past it reminding me of meatloaf. The patty also seemed very mixed vs just meat smashed together. Most recently I've been having burgers from the Priest and Chuck's and the texture and look of the meat is very different. Not better or worse just different.

George or Acadia

My birthday dinner this year was at KSR as well :)

I had a great meal at Acadia last night. Every bite I had really left a strong impression (shrimp and grits, halibut cheeks snapper, albacore...). Definitely a memorable meal. But as others have mentioned it's not "fancy". Very casual and fun vibe.

Goody’s Diner – Finally an Ontario candidate for Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives… and it’s in Scarborough

I was there. There was a large group of us from twitter and maybe another 3 or 4 tables.

It was my first time at Goody's. I had the Goody's burger and enjoyed it but thought the meat itself reminded me more of meatloaf. The texture was definitely a bit more mixed and you can taste that they use seasonings in their meat beyond salt and pepper. These aren't bad things, it just boils down to style.
