I've Rendered My Spouse Useless!
A friend of mine recently married and his wife "doesn't cook". Well not only doesn't she cook, she doesn't shop, she doesn't "prep", she doesn't even set the table. She will clean up afterwards but "doesn't cook" to her means that anything to do with setting food on the table is not her job.
I just gave my friend a pat on the back and said "good luck"
Any Oxford/Seymour/Southbury CT recs?
I lived in Oxford for 10 years and well, you're not going to find GREAT food in the immediate area. First Street Pizza in Seymour is the best pizza in the area, take out and delivery only. However they are also the most expensive pizza in the area and I've noticed that they started skimping on the toppings. Rosa's pizza is a nice Italian family restaurant. Food is okay but again, you're not going to find fine dining in Oxford.
I haven't been to Brookside in about 5yrs but the last time I was there for drinks and appetizers everything was good.
Rolando's is your "bar" of Oxford. Its also a family restaurant but the food is iffy at best. Drinks are good.
LaCucinaRustica is similar to Rosa's. Family type Italian style food.
I found the best Chinese food in the area is right on the Oxford Seymour line and the name is escaping me. Its in the plaza behind the new CVS. Again, its Seymour so food is okay but its not going to Wow you.
Crave in Ansonia in my opinion is the best food in the Valley. I'm also hearing great things about the new Antonio's that have opened in Beacon Falls and Ansonia.
Fritz's is a nice place for breakfast, coffee could be better. Sandwich Man is eh at best.
A Nardelli's just opened in Oxford. Nardellis has been on the travel channel for having great sandwiches. I've been to a Nardelli's once in Naugatuck and it was a good sandwich.
I've heard good things about the food at The Lodge in Southford, its a bar, haven't been there so can't really give an opinion.
I've also heard good things about the Trestle Tavern in Seymour, but again, its a bar and I haven't been there.
Welcome to Oxford!
Hot Tamale from Seymour CT to open Main St Ansonia
I was there a few weeks ago, mid Sunday afternoon, for one drink only. I was only there for about 45 minutes, first date meeting kind of thing. It was a very hot day, we sat outside. We were the ONLY ones there are there were two people who worked there, standing in the shade. One was on her phone texting, the other one just stood there. It was a solid 5 minutes before anyone acknowledged us. Can't comment on food or the restaurant itself. This was the first time I had ever been there.

River View BBQ in Seymour, have any of you chowhounds tried it?
I finally went to the River View this past Friday. We were there around 5pm and there were only two other tables occupied. As Pipenta mentions, this location is very nice. I was with my 78 yr old dad and my 6 yr old son.
My dad had asked if they had hotdogs, and the waitress told him only if you're over 65 or under 12. Well luckily for my dad he met the criteria. I found this a little odd as don't people between the ages of 12 and 65 enjoy a hotdog from time to time?
anyway, my dad got his hotdog, I got the pulled pork and my son got the chicken tenders, another under 12, over 65 item. All of our food was delicious and all three came with handcut french fries which were very good. I had tried my son's chicken tenders and for chicken tenders they were very moist and crispy. I wish I had known it was BYOB as I would have loved a nice beer to go with my meal while enjoying the view.
casual restaurants along I-84 & I-95 through CT & RI
I would like to suggest Stowe's seafood, instead of Chicks drive in. Chicks is for the masses, and is a very hard scape...concrete picnic tables. Stowes is literally a few doors down, more of a true "clam shack", and definitely more of a New England style. I also prefer Stowe's food over Chicks.
How much milk do you buy/use? (and how do you use it all up?)
you can freeze milk easily. Try dividing it and freezing half. Just remember to take it out a day or two ahead of time to defrost.
Do you use a lunchbox?
I use this http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/63702?pi=1044555&bv=product-_-1138-_-RLP-_-I-262355-_-productname_link&qs=300008
They updated the design from the one I have but it has the same features. I love it!
Roseland Apizza: ambiance doesn't affect price. Warning: pizzas can cost $85!
Okay, so after 10 years, probably longer I did go back and well it was the same Roseland.
I will say the food was fabulous! I mean really fabulous. We had a party of 6, two had the lobster ravioli, I shared a med cheese pizza with another gal, one had chicken parm dinner and one had shrimp and scallops marinara. We had a large antipasto and mozz garlic bread for the table. We had two rounds of drinks and with tip it came to $275. I didn't see the bill so not sure what it was before the tip.
As fabulous as the food was I have to say the place is a dump. It was filthy! just about every chair around our table had a serious size rip. The bathrooms were not only freezing but very dirty.
We had asked for extra oil & vinegar for the anti and they brought a small can of oil and a bottle of vinegar and about 15 minutes later they had to take the vinegar back for another table...we laughed and joked that they borrowed it from the kitchen..who knows, maybe they did.
Our waitress was a little rough and we nick named the bus boy "The Situation" . He just did not fit in the place LOL! The Situation also gave our garlic bread to the wrong table so they had to make us another order.
So overall - food was fabulous, service was mediocre and the place was filthy.
Will I go back...probably
brazzi`s new haven,ct.
I'm very surprised by this. Brazi's has always been a reliable place to get good food at a decent price.
maybe an off night? has anyone else had a bad meal recently?
I'm usually a lunch eater but I was there for dinner around Christmas and my food was very good.
Have they stopped making Hickory Farms Beef Stick?
the beef stick was always a favorite in my stocking growing up.
looking for caterer for office party
what about Chestnut Fine Foods in New Haven? I use them all the time for business lunches, small crowds but they do larger functions. They have a small shop on State Street where my mouth just waters when I walk in.

Supermarket "marketing" of Thankgiving items
6 years ago when I was 9 months pregnant and hosting Thanksgiving I had ordered the boxed Thanksgiving dinner from Stop & Shop. It seemed to make as many if not more dishes than if I had cooked the entire thing from scratch and everything was loaded with butter. If I were ever in similar circumstances I think I would just make it simple with turkey, mashed potatoes, vegetable and dessert. scratch all the side dishes and fancy serving wear.
Modern Apizza-- is the rest of the food any good?
As much as I love Modern I agree about the clam pie, Pepe's is better and sorry, I've never had anything but pizza there.
A little trick with Modern, you can order ahead. This really only works at lunch time when the place isn't packed yet. I work about 10 minutes away, I call when I'm leaving the within 5 minutes of sitting down we have our pizza.
As I said, this would never work during peak hours but lunch on a weekday its perfect.
What should be on a kids menu?
this is what I do. I have a 5 yr old boy and I ask him what he wants for dinner, many times he does not order off the kids menu but from the appetizers.
As for suggestions on the kids menu...how about a small salad with chicken or other protein. My son often gets a small salad and bread and butter when we go out. Or if we are at an Italian place he wants just a meatball or just sausage.
Looking for great food at nice CT Inn setting
I attended a lunch there last year in December and it was lovely. I don't know how the rooms are but the food was delicious and the service was great. I walked away thinking that was one of the loveliest lunches I had ever had.
Roseland Apizza: ambiance doesn't affect price. Warning: pizzas can cost $85!
I used to live nearby and yeah the pizza is good but I haven't been back in at least 10 years and probably never will go back.
I don't care how good the food is, the service is horrible, employees are rude, the place is small.
I had ordered take out once. The woman got my order wrong and she yelled at me. I would not recommend Roseland to anyone EVER.
Haunted Restaurants?
The Carousel Gardens in Seymour CT is supposedly haunted. Its received alot of press over the years. The place is under a total remodel now so it will be interesting to see if the "hauntings" resume.
Bellissimo, Naugatuck CT
This place opened almost a year ago on Rubber Ave in Naugatuck. I went for the first time this past weekend.
It used to be an old sports bar and the floor shows it. that is the only negative thing I can say about the place. It was Saturday night and there were two tables occupied with a party of 5 and a party of 6. while we were there, two other booths became occupied.
We were looking for pizza so thats what we ordered. Only small and larges, no mediums so we got a large "steak pizza". The steak itself was ok, but it had peppers, onions and for an extra $1 we got fresh mozz. The sign outside said "wood fired brick oven". And sure enough, they have a wood fired brick oven. The pizza was fantastic! I dare say it was as good as, if not better, than New Haven pie.
the crust was thin, and cooked perfectly. The fresh mozz was really what made the pie.
My 5 yr old got a side salad with the house dressing, creamy balsamic, which tasted fresh was. We also got a side of garlic bread. I've never seen so much garlic on bread before.
I think our waitress was a family member and very pleasant, helpful and attentive.
A large pizza, a side salad, garlic bread, 4 beers and a milk came to $43 change. I will most definitely be going back. There is a small bar area which is fully stocked.

Stowe's, for seafood, in West Haven
I completely agree. Chicks is nasty and Stowe's is literally a half block away.
Love Stowes!!
Jfood visits Lake Zoar Drive-In (Monroe, CT) for a burger and fries
Gotta love it!

New Restaurant opening soon in downtown Ansonia, CT .....Antonio's
I don't know about Antonio's but I had to laugh at the Fabulous Downtown Ansonia statement.
I miss the Antonio's that was on Rt. 67 in Oxford many years ago. Rolando's sits there now and sadly their food just doesn't compare to the old Antonio's. An Antonio's opened in Beacon Falls over the last year or so. I wonder if any of these are related.
Big E 2010 -- Fair Food Highlights
am I sensing there is a "fried" theme. Does not sound appealing at all to me.
Breakfast review Top O' The Mornin Waterbury CT
I've been there twice and you're right about the coffee, it needs a bit of help! The corned beef hash is what keeps me happy!
Big E 2010 -- Fair Food Highlights
I went last year and I was not impressed with the food! and make sure you bring your wallet as everthing was $8.
Breakfast in Hamden CT
they still haven't! well I shouldn't say that. The went to the Brown Stone House in Hamden a few times. They don't take credit cards so that is the biggest complaint. I'm trying to get them to the Breakfast Nook. The problem being that never having been there I'm not sure if its acoustics are good for business talk. So, I'm trying to get my boss there for breakfast for a more casual experience first before I schedule an actual meeting.
The next "meeting" is in mid August, I'll update again.
