Emidios

went there last night for 1st timePortugese place.Got there at 630,not very crowded.Server, maria, came right over and everything sounded great--we went with 2 specials, the chicken soup and a marinated pork chunk dish.Well the soup was excellent--but the pork dish with clams was bad.We had asked to put my wifes clams on the side since she hates clams--thats didnt happen. The pork was not trimmed and was very grissly/tough---just a bad cut of meat.Half the meals here are pork based,so assume they all have the same cut. When i looked at Urbanspoon before goingIi saw may of the reviews had little history reviewing, all reviews were very good and excelent, figure must be stuffing the reviews with friends
Then when we wanted to leave it had gotten very crowded and it took 30 minutes and 3 requests to diffreent folks to get a bill--we never saw maria again, iand i think shes an owner--we wont be back

The ups and downs of a weekend in Midtown

thanks for thje post--we like to know the bad as well as the good. There are so manay very good steak places in town,MCKendricks,Rathbuns,Bones.Chops--its a shame you didnt go to one of those--For sure theyre are priceier than where you went but they are consistently very good.Even Long Horns sounds alot better than your experience

if you read the whole post youd see this comment

"but if there is something that is absolutely not to be missed, I would definitely consider it."

McKendricks fits that bill. Flemings and Firdbirds are priced pretty fair for a burger

vortex is a smoke allowed deal--brgers are OK,but i cant stand smell of smoke.I love the varisty, but it more of a very casual fast food spot-Great chili cheese dogs,Its more of a lunch place--have car hops too.

I live near Perimeter and the best steak place youll vere go to is at McKendricks--Tooka friend of mine,a fellow NYer who owns the COPA there a afew wesks ago, and he said best rib eye hes ever had. Also have lobster potatoes,au gratin, great lamb chops if you go ask for Taco as your waiter, tell him Bob sent you.Gold fish is also nearby, very varied menu. LaGrotta is in the Crown Plaza too, very good Italian--alll walkable. For hamburgers Flemings is very good, and Firebirds ,close but maybe 15 minute walk. If you gte car or want to cab it Gu's Bistro is the best Chinese in town. Its Szechuan, and very good.Maybe a 10 miniute cab ride on Buford Highway.Claosed on Mons Have fun

N. Buckhead/Brookhaven - Lenox Park - Atlanta - Restaurants?

bistro Niko and Bones are very good spots. Buckhead diner (which isnt really a diner) has an excellent lunch --daily catch is great, and you have to have the blue cheese chips as appetizer

Marietta?

BBQ is like pizza--it all depends on what you had as a child--then all pizza et al has to e that wayas an adult--same with BBQ folks from Texas like beef BBQ, south like pork, some like SC sauce or NC sauce, some like chopped--imfrom NYC where BBQ really wasnt big till the koreans showed up--but i lived near Lexington NC, the home of southern BBQ for a while and like the pulled pork with slaw, and hush puppies, with the NC sauce each to his own,but there are some better places around

Marietta?

BTW Grand Champion BBQ is execllent--its in Marietta--their beef brisket is unreal, pork is excellent. As i said i did live out your way,and Gu's is in that class. But your right about trying something new. There are lots of very good spots in town, which woud be maybe 30 minute drive from marietta,South City Kitchen may fit your bill

Marietta?

been to both Greenwoods and Pastis--both very good.Greenwoods has great southern type food, and makes their own cakes et al.
Pastis is very good country French--both are in Roswell---For country French, i like le Petite Maison better--its about 15 minutes fromPastis, but id drive 285 to Roswell rd--in no traffic time itll be maybe 25 minutes fromMarietta Its run by a French family and is execllent and not expensive--get their house salad and thei "perfitorles" as dessert.I usually just get their special.
If you like Szechuan trek over to Gu's Bistro--itd be maybe a 30minute run but its the best in Atlanta--again family run, but check out their menu.I lived in Palo Alto for a bit, and this is as good as any Avenues spot in SF.Enjoy

downtown Gu's

heres an announcement on smaller Gu's downtown

Gu's Dumplings will open from the team behind Buford Highway's popular Gu's Bistro. It'll serve dumplings and noodles as well as a few starters and other dishes like the spicy dry eggplant. Unlike at the bistro, which serves all pork dumplings, there will be vegetarian and other meat options available in Krog Street Market. The owners say that they're making the move into town because they listened to their customers. "A lot of our customers who travel from in town to Buford Highway say there are no authentic Chinese restaurants in town and that we should open one," says Yvonne Gu Khan. "At first, we were just going to sell dumplings, but they said, no you have to have these other dishes as well." The restaurant will not have its own seating, but the market's common areas will have tables and chairs for guests to utilize. On Twitter: @GusDumplings
