fried chicken and mac @ Roscoes ckn n waffles ?

I've been going to Roscoe's for 25 years and for me it has always been good but never great. I think the chicken is good (again not great), and the waffles are better. The mac and cheese is boring. If you like grits, though, I would say that their grits are pretty tasty. They are quite generous with the butter.

Berkeley Dog opening in O.C.

Wait. This is too good! The Trotskyites from Berkeley are giving us a reason to celebrate May Day in the OC. Bravo!!!! I ate many a Top Dog during my college years and hope this is a reasonable facsimile. I am conjuring wonderful taste memories of bocks and brats.

Favorite things you've eaten at LA casinos?

I'm chuckling because this post reminded me of the old (20-25 years ago) radio ad for the Normandie Club. "The Normandie Club where the service of fine food and beverages is an art form." Which was true if having your food served to you on a tv tray next to a gaming table was an art form. I remember a tasty hot turkey sandwich with gravy, but that was 20 years ago.

Whisk LA - Excellent Coconut Macaroons

I must give post-seder props to Whisk LA for their positively insane coconut macaroons. These pyramids of chewy coconut perfection were gleefully devoured by a group of people that were already stuffed to the gills. We had three varieties: plain, dark chocolate and white chocolate. I couldn't pick a favorite; all three were scrumptious.

Rivera vs. Church and State vs. Lazy Ox Canteen

I realize this is moot now, but for future readers of this post here's the skinny on the distance: Church & State about 2.5 miles; Lazy Ox about 2 miles; Rivera about 500 feet

Yes, liu, that's the location. I didn't know they had other locations either. They do make a delicious horchata! I love their tacos and their tortas.

LA - Japanese restaurants

Pamela18, please pardon the snideness your posting has generated. Unfortunately, there is no shortage of sushi snobs on this board; people whose myopia prevents them from understanding that different people have different tastes. If something in the vein of Koi is what you desire - AND THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT PEOPLE, there are several restaurants which fill that bill. The aforementioned Sushi Roku, Katana, Matsuhisa, Nobu (which, of course, you already have in NYC) and Katsuya should all meet your needs. Have a good time and enjoy, and ignore those who throw their arms up in exasperation and cannot possibly imagine anyone having a decent meal at the restaurants you like.

Save me from the horror that is Benihana. I need a PLAN B fellow hounds....stat.

I enjoy good teppan (read: I do not enjoy Benihana), and I would highly recommend Garden Grill at Kyoto Grand Hotel fka New Otani Hotel. It is not cheap, but it is very tasty.

Good steak near LAX

I think that Shula's 347 at the Sheraton Gateway makes a very good steak. I was taken here by a client who needed to catch a plane, and I went skeptically. But I was more than pleasantly surprised.

Best Ethiopian near mid-wilshire?

Yes, but until BART goes about 300 miles further south than Fremont this information is pointless on the Los Angeles board.

Pizza at Angelini Osteria on Beverly ,

The pizza is excellent and is served at both lunch and dinner. So many dishes are outstanding here. I especially like the octopus salad, the stuffed zucchini blossoms and the amazing lasagna verde. Oh, and for dessert the torta de la nonna.

Hong Kong in June - Dining suggestions?

For one lunch, I recommend that you go to Yung Kee. Ask for a table upstairs. Their roasted meats (pork, duck and especially the goose) are delicious. You can order a combination of all three.

I also recommend dim sum or dinner at the China Club. It's private, but a good hotel concierge, or Amex platinum or centurion card will get you in. I prefer the dim sum over dinner, both are very good. The main draw of the China Club is the atmosphere - 1930's Shanghai or HK. David Tang, who created Shanghai Tang, is the driving force behind the China Club. I think it's the most beautiful restaurant in Hong Kong.

And, because it's your honeymoon and you should splurge, go to Fook Lam Moon.

The First Dinner Service at the New Bastide

Oh, I almost forgot... Mahon's Bastide for three people with a very good bottle of Burgundy was about half of what dinner for two was at Bastide's previous incarnations.

The First Dinner Service at the New Bastide

Took the folks to Bastide tonight. I must concur with much of what Kevin H has written (although my party did not sample the entire menu!). What we ate we truly enjoyed. We started with the watercress custard, onion soup, spinach tart, scallop and asparagus. Tough to pick a favorite among these five excellent dishes. For our main courses we had the lamb shank, salmon and the chicken. These were the dishes recommended by the kitchen. I thought the lamb shank and the chicken were both superb (I was fine with the celery root puree - so silky), but I was completely blown away by the salmon. The fish was cooked perfectly and the port wine sauce, which has a nice amount of ginger in it, is sublime. Yes, Kevin H, very reminiscent and absolutely in the same league of Le Bernardin. Finally, we shared the tart. I adore tart tatin and this is very good. The apples are not overly glazed so the dessert is not cloyingly sweet. I would have liked a little more of the salted caramel, but it was excellent. Of note, Chef Manzke was dining there tonight. His was my favorite version of Bastide (after my first meal with him as the chef, I ate there at least once a week until he left). Chef Mahon's Bastide is excellent, and I will eagerly return.

Madeo on Beverly, anyone been for the pizzas there?

Second the Bolognese. Also, I love their vitello tonnato ( I believe this is a special, but they always have it), cotoletta alla milanese, and (when they have it) the roast veal carved tableside.

In Search of Great Food That's not overhyped

I think if there is someplace you have an interest in trying, then you should try it. Your taste is your taste. The opinions of the peanut gallery (myself included) are only opinions - they are not the gospel. I say this because both Bazaar and Animal get some rave reviews, too. If you don't try them, how will you know? Only you can say, after you've eaten at a restaurant, whether or not it is overhyped. My suggestion is to try any restaurants that pique your interest. Who knows what you'll discover? Then you can tell us all about it here and we can say that you're overhyping it! LOL

Caviar and dessert for V Day

The best kind of caviar is beluga, but it is currently not legally available in the US (endangered species). The second best kind of caviar is sevruga. There is a great purveyor of caviar in your neck of the woods.
