Good eats near Sea World with 20-month-old toddler?

sorry but I don't see OB Noodle House as a great place to bring a toddler....blasting music and it is pretty cramped for table space. Damn fine Happy Hour though!

If you go to OB, head a block over from Pizza Port to Newport Ave (the main street with the businesses in Ocean Beach) and there is an ice cream place right near the water (by South Beach Bar and Grill).

If you husband wants to get some fantastic beers to take back home with him, head up Newport, make a right on Sunset Cliffs Blvd (going South), and go two blocks to Olive Tree Market. They have a parking lot and a great selection of local (and international) craft beers as well as a tasty deli if you need sandwiches for the road.

Have a great trip!

Where to find gluten, soy, canola oil, peanut, egg, cow dairy, corn free breakfast in San Diego?

haha good catch.

I try to explain to people, just because you don't want to eat something doesn't mean you are allergic to it!

And if anyone actually exists with these type of food allergies, I would recommend eating at home.

San Diego CLOSED Restaurants - Replacement for old board.

sorry, I forgot to mention it was a "prix fixe" menu, and the menu was listed in courses...so shouldn't they be served as courses? When I had dined at Apertivo in the old location they didn't bring out the dishes in randomized order or randomly not-at-all.

IMO it was over with well before the move. Hoping for a decent revamp after the move, I begrudgingly went for a group dinner (6 of us) a couple of months ago and it was a complete disaster. Seriously, probably the worst service I have ever had in SD. Main courses were coming out with the appetizers, a few main courses weren't brought out until they were also bringing out desserts, and they got mad when we had to remind them about one of our missing entrees (asked 3 times over 45 minutes). When we asked if there was a table mixup because they were bringing out some of the entrees to people that hadn't gotten their appetizers yet, they said "that's how they are served". Ciao!

I'm craving...

I found the vegetarian broth to have far less flavor in it compared to their regular broth...we've done the side by side twice. BC, I suggest soaking a patty melt in the vegetarian broth first!

(or a heaping spoon of that ghost chili paste and bring some napkins for the tears)

San Diego New Places Opening Thread, Part Deux

It looks like they bailed on evening service due to lack of local residents, and they now are open for breakfast and lunch only.

Old Town San Diego

We had horrible dinner service at the Cosmo, but have grown fond of weekend brunch there. You actually get to eat outside in a large open space, and enjoy a drink or beer, and the menu is well above any other places in the area. The food has been more consistent than El Comal (the last 6 months at least).

If locals can bear the thought of having to be seen near those wretched tourist things, and deal with parking, Cosmo is a great choice for lunch.

Whisknladle coming to Little Italy?

thanks for the heads up!

San Diego New Places Opening Thread, Part Deux

I went last week and the menu said 11am to 7pm. Not sure if it is really up to speed yet.

Opening Day at Petco Park..Where to eat?

had a pre-paid ticket for the Parkade so no choice but to slowly wither in the traffic down 10th. Ugh.

What is a Vegan patty melt? A piece of bread with nothing on it? ;)

Opening Day at Petco Park..Where to eat?

Well, we wanted to make it to Mission Brewing before the game but there was absolutely no traffic control for Opening Day so it took about an hour to get down 10th, ruining those plans.

Went to the Block Party to get a beer and some grub but the lines for the beers were ridiculous. We walked over to Proper "gastropub" and had a few beers on the patio with a nice view of the Park.

Checked out the new Hodad's....I believe it might be the best addition to Petco or Qualcomm ever. Prices were extremely reasonable, like you weren't even at a sporting event, you can get some decent beers, and the registers were running efficiently. I talked with the owner, he was thrilled to be in there and even mentioned he wished his parents were still around to see him at the Ballpark. Pretty cool.

Went to a Bull Taco stand outside the Omni area and had the lobster + bacon + chorizo. Quite tasty but somewhat puny at $10 for a taco.

There was an addition of many more craft beer stands at that level too, which is much appreciated.

I couldn't find a Patty Melt stand, sorry BC!

Opening Day at Petco Park..Where to eat?

I am hitting Opening Day. There is some block party along J street at the Park that is supposed to have a few food trucks.

I am more concerned with where to get some grub AFTER the game, since it starts early heh heh.

Great news re: old Police station

hahah I figured the Fashion Valley lines were the overflow from the Gaslamp!

Best Seafood Restaurant in San Diego

They had some issues early on (that aren't allowed to be posted on Chowhound) so I think a lot of people just wrote them off. heck, I didn't even know they were still in business. I used to live near there and would go often for a quick bite or for Lobster season but never think to go back now that I live elsewhere. Oops.

Wines on Tap - SD?

I think Linkery does this, they call it a cask system.

A never-ending search for Outdoor Eats and new-to-OB Roundup

hi!

Yeah, I mentioned above that Port was in the shade by the time we got to OB. I spend several days there a month haha.

We have stopped by Azucar before but they didn't have tables out, so thanks for the heads up.

A never-ending search for Outdoor Eats and new-to-OB Roundup

Spent most of the weekend in OB. Spent a good chunk of both mornings trying to determine nice places to enjoy a meal and a beer out in the sun. Spent a good chunk of both mornings angry and complaining at the lack of them (as I have before on Chowhound as well).

So we drove to OB with a few ideas and so did 20,000 other people. Drove by Tower Two and Shades and the outdoor seating was full with waiting lines. Port OB was in the shade by 1pm.
Newport Pizza had the hippy- and Absurdly Loud Music- factors way way way too high for us (as it often does). Discussed grabbing sandwiches from Olive Tree and just sitting at a bench on Sunset Cliffs. Unfortunately, that can no longer include a tasty beer without threat of fine. Argh.

Finding parking, we stopped by the new place where the Vine used to be, it is now Raglan Public House which is a burger joint (surprise!!!) with a decent tap list and burgers containing all the buzz words (grass fed, local veggies, organic rolls). My burger was cooked medium rare as requested, which was nice. Lots of options available for the burgers as well as vegetarian options. Staff had some Down Under accents, and a girl at our community table said it was owned by another burger place (Bare Back perhaps). Not all tables are community, but there was outdoor seating (rare in San Diego for some reason) and the windows open up fully so that leaves plenty of options and stemmed my complaining (as did a fantastic pint of Port Brewing Mongo).

Also went by Olive Tree Market to pick up some fine craft beers and their new Mediterranean bistro next door was open, called Kecho. Didn't get to eat there but it was small and quite nice inside, focus is small plates. Prices were good, I think the most expensive was $14 or so, menu is not online yet. We look forward to trying it soon (big fan of the Olive Tree people).

Speaking of Greek, the old Little Chef on the corner of Newport and Cable (?) closed down and there is some sort of bar/bistro/insert-buzz-word replacement. Small plates, good beer, etc, called the Joint. Didn't see a menu.

Hopefully we can find more places to have lunch in the sun that aren't way out east (i.e. east of the 805 haha)

San Diego CLOSED Restaurants - Replacement for old board.

according to the UT, Maria Maria in Hazard Center is closing. I assume a burger place will open in place of it since there is only one (Smashburger) in Hazard Center currently.

Underbelly

I had that impression also, but I figured they kept the temp down since everyone would be lifting the massive bowl up to their face. Or maybe the temp just drops quickly when the bowls are carried past the jet-stream windows heh heh.

Who's familiar with 'old' San Diego restaurants?

mikec nailed it. It was good enough years ago if you wanted to put down cheap drinks at the Red Fox and grab some average steak or shrimp late night, but now there are so many other options in the area with far better food. last time I got some late night food there I was surprised at the prices being high for the quality of the food.

Piano bar can still be pretty fun, even though Shirley has departed us.

No spoon rule at Underbelly

As I sat in the Underbelly window happily tilting my bowl back, chugging the broth that I fired up with too much ghost pepper paste, I thought...."hmmm how the heck would I drink the broth if I was puny and had a broken arm(s) since there aren't any spoons?" As I drank my $7 tiny glass of beer I decided: I would make the waitstaff (or even better, the owner) lift the bowl for me.

Keep that in mind next time you break both your arms and want some ramen.

San Diego CLOSED Restaurants - Replacement for old board.

is this the old "Aussie Pub"? Wow I used to go there for cheap wings back in the 90s.
I remember the owner and his wife...didn't even know it changed to The Black Pearl.

I stopped going after it always started smelling like vomit at the bar haha

Will be visiting SD in March. Hoping to find a restaurant with no spoons.

haha, well assuming you aren't just trolling (and I won't bite for the most obvious no-spoon answer) you might try Muzita Abyssinian Bistro, an Ethiopian eat-with-your-hands place on Park Blvd.

Craft & Commerce in Little Italy

seriously man, all these miles of oceanfront and 3 days of rain a year and there is a massive dearth of places to have a beer and lunch and see the water. I never can understand it.

Blanca--Last Night Tonight

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

that really sucks. Was really hoping he would have something set up in central SD soon.
*edit* I don't see anything about him moving on his Facebook or Twitter pages, and he is doing some dinners down here in February. Hmm.

Local Hero, Tender Greens

How is it BS if you don't know what it is? ;)
(there's your wink)

Thanks for the Tender Greens reminder picky, need to go there very soon

Stop the noise!

I think I watch City Sushi every couple of weeks since it came out, love it.

Carnitas Snack Shack..

Agreed, it was a pork cavalcade but at the end of the meal I had the [very] rare opinion of something have TOO much pork. My GF had the carnitas tacos which were quite fat and very well done. I look forward to returning to force the rest of the menu thru my arteries.

Skirt Steak

I think Pancho Villas has several types of thin beef cuts, last time I was there getting lunch I was salivating at the meat case.
