For what it's worth, we prefer Shanghai East over LIttle Shanghai for two reasons: the "xiao chi" (Shanghai snack) menu and the staff (they are typically warm, friendly, and personable).

One "inbetween" possibility which we went with years ago is La Nouvelle Patisserie on Union Street for their wonderful French tarts. We had a multi-tiered fruit tart which was both equisitiely designed as well as fresh. Not yet cake and not yet pie, but wonderfully fun and delicious.

lucca's deli on valencia at 22nd (or so? near esperpento) in the mission is an argentinian/italian deli and they carry argentinian empanada wrappers, both baked and fried wrapper types (see the back freezers).
