Italian Beef places that ship...

As an exiled Chicagoan, I need to get my beef kits shipped. Of course I'm familiar with the usual suspects like Portillo's, Buona and Vienna...but I want some variety and am looking for other places that ship across country.

Hot dog or Italian beef quandary

Easy...Portillo's at 100 West Ontario is a couple of blocks away and has top-notch italian beef and hot dogs. Not to mention a comfortable and attractive locale...

Egg rolls with peanut butter

The only problem with Golden Chef is no MSG... :(

Retro Chinese

Yes, Golden Chef is pretty good, but they don't use MSG, which is a must for old-fashioned Chinese...

I had them as long ago as the '60's at Pekin House on Devon, which is still open, though I haven't been there in 20 years...

The old place you're thinking of is the great Hi-Howe, which closed in in 2000....the closest I've found in quality is China Chef in Morton Grove. Fantastic egg rolls made with peanut butter...

Chicago-style Italian Beef hits Connecticut

Just had the beef again, and can't rave about it enough...have taken 5 other Chicago transplants and they all love the sandwich.

What does that have to do with the quality?

Yeah, there is a "Cheesy Beef", but I've never been a fan of that....

As a transplanted Chicagoan, I was excited yet skeptical about the prospect of an east coast beef...but I am happy to report that it was much, much better than I expected. To be honest, I was just hoping for something serviceable as I don't know of another place within 500 miles that serves the sandwich, but my craving was more than quenched and I will be a regular.

The beef was high-quality, properly prepared, tasty and juicy enough to satisfy even my beef-savy palate. The giardiniera peppers were indistinguishable from Chicago's finest, but I recommend for newbies to order them 'on the side' so you can determine how much to put on the sandwich. My only quibble is that the roll was not quite authentic, but was close enough not to detract from my enjoyment.

Overall I'd say it was better than 75% of the beef sandwiches I had in Chicago...I just prey that the dish catches on and more places put it on the menu. The chef told me it's their best-selling item, so I'm excited.

Now all they need is a picture of Mike Ditka on the wall...

Italian beef in Brooklyn?

Not Brooklyn, but a doable drive...this looks extremely promising...

Coney Island: What's The Deal With This Place?

Thanks Dave, I'm still confused by the White Castle signage.

Coney Island: What's The Deal With This Place?

Just curious, as a transplanted-Chicagoan, how these dogs rate...and how do they serve real White Castle burgers?

Coney Island: What's The Deal With This Place?

As a newly transplanted Chicagoan, I took my first visit to Coney Island today; my family and I had just finished our requisite Nathan's when we looked across the street to see... "Big Al's Chicago Hot Dog King".

The place was shut down.

What's the story? Was it/Is it any good? Did they just heat up frozen White Castles? Could someone pick a worse spot in the universe to open a Chicago hot dog stand?

Someone enlighten me.

Italian Beef Sandwich in NYC?

The reason you can't find it in the Italian community is because it's not really an Italian dish. It was created in Chicago by Italian immigrants in the early 1900's...hence the name.

As an ex Chicagoan, I have searched far and wide for one out east, but your best bet is to get a make-it-yourself kit delivered from Portillo's, Vienna Beef or some other Chicago haunt, they turn out just as good as the original.

Natural Casing Dogs-Where to get them

To me, the ONLY real Chicago dog is a natural casing dog...unfortunately they're getting harder to find. Let's start a list of places which serve 'em. I'll start with a few...all are in Chicago unless listed otherwise.
