Semi-Catered Funky Picnic Wedding Food

FRIED CHICKEN. Some friends who got married grew their own chickens!

We had the challenge of having a lot of vegan guests, so we baked loaves of several types of bread and had an assortment of sandwich fillings: roast beeves for the meatitarians, grilled portabello mushrooms, baba ganoush, etc. There were lots of snacky things too, like crudite, fruits, cheeses and dips. If you are going to DIY the catering, I suggest appointing a head caterer. I basically wrote my good friend a check and he made sure all the food got put out on time.

I ate at Texas Monthly’s Top 5 BBQ Pits in One Weekend.

I heard Snow's gets their sausage from City Market.

It's not in the top 5, but I was impressed with Mann's on 183. I've always contended to get good barbecue you have to drive outside the city limits, but I think they're pretty good.

Hot dogs, Vienna beef and Home Depot

Rockets on 5th between Congress and Colorado advertises that they use Vienna Beef. A friend who was a Chicago expat (back in Chicago now) regularly stopped by for their Rocket Dog when he wanted a taste of home, but doesn't find it 100% authentic because they toast the buns.

The Woodlands

I like the Sitar.

[HOU] Triple A on Airline

I've never been to the Triple A for dinner, but I love it for breakfast. I swear they put crack in their pancakes! The service is not always the greatest, but I luv it there.

Best Happy Hour Specials

Ruth's Chris does $5 martinis, anything you can think to call (including their $15 "Mexican" martini), and half price appetizers in the bar until 6:50. The bar staff is super friendly.
