'Shroom Burger ala NYC's Shake Shack?

Redwood bar in downtown LA does a cheese-stuffed shroom burger, but no where near the insanity of Shake Shack. Would love to try to make one at home - does anyone have a recipe?

Best bread in LA?

Village Bakery on Los Feliz in Atwater (opened fairly recently) has great breads - from baguettes to asiago cheese to hamburger buns. Great neighborhood place.

white & black bean chili question

I'm making a chili using dried white (cannellini) beans and dried black beans. Can I rehydrate them (soak and boil) together, or should I do them separately?

Thanks!

Catering For A Vegetarian Wedding (in the valley)?

Madeleine Bistro in Tarzana does catering - it's vegan, but even meat eaters don't mind!

Vegan Eats ???

Orean is a drive-through vegan joint on Lake in Pasadena which is pretty good. I love Fatty's and they do have a lot of vegan choices.

Saffron? Fast Food Indian Downtown?

Any signal that they'll be open for dinner? I'm in Echo Park and dying for a decent nearby Indian restaurant, especially for take out. I generally go to Halal Indian down on Vermont and 4th or so, but I'm getting a little tired of it. Any other Indian food recs?

Gourmet Weekly: Water

Thanks for posting this Jasmine! Part of the debate is - should restuarants charge for filtered water? If a restaurant spends hundreds of dollars on a fancy filtration system, either they charge for the water, or make up the cost by raising prices somewhere else. Is it a greater crime to charge for filtered tap water that's just as clean if not cleaner than Panna or Pelligrino or to charge an 800% mark-up on bottled water that's not as eco-friendly?

Gourmet Weekly: Water

Could anyone post the information about charging for bottled water in a recent edition of Ruth Reichl's "Gourmet Weekly?" It's sparked some debate, but I can't seem to find where it's archived.

Thanks!

What to eat @ Malo in Silverlake

They have some great specialty cocktails, and a ton of different tequillas and mezcals on the list, so it's hard to go wrong with the drinks.

I love the burnt habenero salsa, it's very spicy and sweet, but your safest bet is to go with the salsa flight to suit all appetites.

I would make a reservation if I were you. The do get pretty busy, and if you don't have a reservation, you tend to get stuck at crappy tables, also, the outside patio tends to fill up pretty quickly, if you prefer to sit there.

Their chile relleno is not very remarkable and can be too cheesy. I always get the potato and eggplant tacos and fresh beans - everything comes a la carte, so you can easily share a bunch of sides. The fried bananas with creme fraiche and garlic are yummy too.

Is gourmet L.A. out to get vegetarians? (long)

I feel your pain - as a veggie and someone professionally involved with the restaurant industry, the lack of veggie options makes me crazy. I honestly don't consider pasta or risotto to be a suitable veggie entree (I can make those at home!) and I'm shocked at lack of imagination in so many chefs when it comes to non-animal protein. Too many times I've had to make due with creating a meal out of sides and I don't understand how restaurants think that this is an OK way to treat customers. I've called ahead to restaurants to let them know I'm a veggie if I'm going with a group and they often do provide something special, but it's generally pasta with veggies, or on occasion, a plate of plain grilled veggies. There are some restaurants that do fabulous, interesting and varied vegetarian entrees, like Grace or Melisse, and I wish there were more!

I just went to Fraiche, and the menu on the website had a vegetarian entree, but when we went there, it was taken off - so maybe it wasn't selling.

Divinity in LA?

Anyone know where I can find this southern treat in Los Angeles? West Hollywood or Downtown locations would be ideal. No luck at the farmers market at 3rd & Fairfax.

fatty's & co

I've been a big fan since they opened and even though they've made some drastic changes from a casual coffee shop vibe to more of a fine dining vibe, it's all still very good. Just went 2 weeks ago and enjoyed my meal very much - lentil moussaka. My bf got some sort of fake steak which had a little too much going on flavor wise. I have had terrible service problems in the past (the waitress brought food out that we didn't order and then refused to take it back and bring out the food we did order) but they've certainly been working on it. Overall, I would def. reccomend Fatty's for a nicer night out. But call before you go b/c they have a strange schedule.

Opus according to JG

Just went for the first time for dinner on Sunday - the tasting menu wasn't on the dinner menu and the waiter didn't mention it, so I thought it was no longer, but I guess I was wrong! Maybe you just have to ask for it. Had some fantastic hand torn pasta with grapes, chives and a jidori chicken egg. The pea soup was a little to milky for me and I didn't quite get the point of the mandarin segments floating around in it, but overall, an amazing experience and the som helped us choose some fantastic, and surprisingly affordable wines.

Anyone been to 750ml lately?

Want to take the mom-in-law there for her b-day next weekend. Saw the negative experiences people had right after the opening and wondering if they've cleaned up their act at all (ie, bigger portions, more menu options, better service, etc.).

Thanks!

Best pizza in town - informal opinion poll

I'm in love with Il Capriccio Pizzeria in Los Feliz. Amazing crust that's crispy and chewy at once, very high quality toppings. A runner-up to Mozza.

Where to take my picky vegetarian mother?

What about Fatty's in Eagle Rock? It's all vegetarian and people either love it or hate it, but I think it's great. Open for dinner only these day.
