Recent Denver trip

Spent 4 nights in Denver recently and wanted to report on my overall very successful dining experiences. Best was Fruition. Great neighborhood place, friendly staff and excellent food in a relaxed atmosphere. Next night was a Root Down, which has a lively, buzzy atmosphere, also very friendly staff and good, though not excellent, food. A fun night out, though. Then went to El Diablo, a divey Mexican place which was great. Killer margarita's, authentic food and pleasant staff. Not fine dining by any means, but worth the trip. Finally, went to Ossetia Marco on Larimar Street. It was fine. Relaxed, not particularly intimate, food was good if unmemorable. Nothing wrong with the place, but it was the least interesting of the lot. Had a vegetarian lunch in Boulder at Leaf. Nice place, good food. Not much more to say. Final meal before heading to the airpot was lunch at Domo, a Japanese "country" restaurant. My wife loved the brown rice and the food was certainly not standard Japanese. Not a soy sauce bottle in site. Muted flavor, healthly food. Probably not for every one, but we liked it.

That's it!

Review of Les trois petits bouchons

Went there recently and enjoyed the experience, though I would say the prices edge towards excessive. The service was outstanding and the atmosphere relaxed, but entrees priced at over 30 dollars (dinner for three was $250) would probably keep me from coming back or from recommending it to friends.

Two quick questions

In Montreal for a few days and looking for Angnostura bitters and good fresh fish. Any suggestions on where I can find either? Many thanks.

Wine Store in DC

I would also suggest Bell's if you're downtown. The staff are a bit gruff, but the selection is good and hte prices fair.

Fine Dining in NYC

I'm pretty sure Sushi Yasuda has closed and been replaced by Shimizi Sushi.

Sri Lanka sambol

Anywhere in the DC area where you can purchase?

McGill students looking for birthday dinner venue

It would be a group of around 10. They're looking for something inexpensive (maybe BYOB) in the ghetto/St Laurent area. Type of cuisine is not important as long as the food and atmosphere is good.

Nice bar for my parents on st. Laurent/St Denis

Thanks to responses to an earlier posting, we're going out for dinner on rue St Denis next weekend. Would like to take my elderly parents for a drink first. Anything in the area you can suggest that is nice but not particularly trend or exlusively for under 30's?

Dinner in le Plateau

Coming to Montreal to take my daughter out for dinner for her 19th birthday. Looking for a good place not too far from McGill with good food, but not too formal. Been to L'Express and loved it. More of the same in the area would be welcome.

authentic ethnic restaurants in DC area

Forget about high end dining - and where are the best, etc,, etc, - how about where do you go to get great, and authentic, national cuisine - be it Mexican, Chinese, Thai, Indian/Pakistani? These are likely to be places frequented more by nationals of the country's cuisine that by visitors.

family lunch Sunday near rue Saint Denis/Plateau

Any recommendations for a nice place to take famliy and grand parents to Sunday. We're staying on St. Denis and Ave des Pins, so anywhere in this vicinity. French, Italian, Asian, all fine. Looking for some where nice but not too fancy. Thanks.

easy going dining in Milan

Will be in Milan next weekend on my own. Would love to sample some risotto and maybe pizza al porcini. Any suggestions. Staying near the train station, but happy to travel.

Special occasion meal in Montreal for a group

Dropping of our daughter in two weeks at McGill and looking for a nice, though not-stuffy place for dinner for us plus grandparents and boyfriend. Montreal's my old home town, but haven't lived there for years. Somewhere not too far from the university would be good. No particular cuisine in mind, though a few in the group are non-meat eaters (fish/seafood is fine). Budget is around 50-60 dollars per person. Suggestions?

solo dinner tonight

Was going to eat at A Voce tonight, but my companion has cancelled. Now looking for a decent place in the Flatiron or lower areas of Manhattan to eat solo, preferably at a bar. Have enjoyed the bar at Grammercy Tavern in the past, but would also like to try Babbo. Is is still difficult to get a place at the bar on a weeknight?

Health food/vegetarian in Santa Fe

In SF for a few days and I know a lot of the restaurants of vegetarian friendly, but looking for something a little more health food oriented for my wife. Brown rice, tofu, vegan, that sort of thing. Suggestions?

Santa Fe Favorites

I would also have to disagree that locals don't go to Coyote Cafe. Ate there last night and in walked Gov. Bill Richardson. He may not be an average citizen, but is certainly a local. Food was excellent too.

Great Ramen without a reservation

Any suggestions for authenticity with a casual atmosphere?

wine stores in Union Square

looking for a place with a good selection of American, Spanish and Australian wines in the Flatiron district. Any suggestions?

SF Bars

yes, should have said. Apart from the occasional martini, we're wine drinkers.

one-day wine tour

While in San Francisco I'd like to go on a one day wine tour where transportation, etc., is included. I enjoy wine and so am looking for something for those with a bit of wine knowledge. Any companies you can recommend?

SF Bars

I'm in San Francisco next week for a long weekend. This board has been very helpful in choosing restaurants, now I'm hoping I can get equally good advice on drinking establishments. We're staying in the downtown area, but willing to move around and looking for everything from a notable neighborhood dive something more sophisticated. Just no jackets or ties required. Thanks.

Asian food stores in DC

Are there any Asian/Indian food stores in DC or does one have to travel to Virginia or Maryland. Would be great to have a source of kaffir lime leaves or curry leaves.

New Year's Eve in DC

I normally avoid eating out on New Year's Eve because of all the prix fixe, add-on nonsense. Any one know of restaurants where it's possible to have a special meal without all the fuss and added expense that many restaurants feel is necessary. Locations would be: Georgetown, downtown, Capitol Hill. Price is not that much of an issue. Neither is cuisine, as long as there are non-meat options.

Restaurant K's

Took some of the office out here for lunch this week and thought I'd share some thoughts. We had a reservation, arrived on time but were still kept waiting. Our server was absolutely hopeless. Just getting water took ages. Our meals took longer, were delivered by a different server, other tables around us were left with dirty plates on them. The espresso was poor and luke warm. The food was good but really with service like we had I don't know if we'd return. Surely a restaurant on K street needs to do a lot of business at lunch. I hope the owners read this blog, because they need to sort out a few things. I would have sent them a message directly but the website doesn't have an email contact. If I were a betting man, I would say this place is not in it for the long haul.

Left my job, need to celebrate

if you're celebrating , The Blue Duck Tavern is excellent. May not be able to get a reservation now though. Dupont Gril is also good and cheaper. TenPen is another good, though pricey choice.

restaurants that do delivery in Washington

Friday and looking to order in tonight. Top choices would be Thai, Chinese or pizza. Must deliver to Georgetown. Any suggestions?

Thoughts on SD restaurants

I just got back from five days in San Diego and wanted to share my thoughts on some restaurant experiences.

Candelas - recommended frequently on this board, I thought the food was mediocre and not distinctively Mexican. Also, the fussy, overly-formal service was a bit too much.

Taka - also recommended frequently here. I thought it was excellent and went there twice. The atmosphere at the sushi bar is great and the chefs make useful reommendations.

Blue Point Coastal - I thought it was pretty good, thought not great.

Rama (Thai) - More Chinese than Thai. Nice atmosphere but not very authentic cuisine. They have a 1 to 10 hotness scale, but even at 10 the food is not very spicey.

Never did manage to get to a taco shop, so I'll have to return at some point.

best coffee in SD

who serves the best cup of coffee in SD? A good - non-Starbucks - atmosphere would be a bonus.

Four nights in SD

My wife and I are going to be working in SD for four days later this month. Each night we'll be lookig to eat out some where new. Ideally one night would be Japanese (not just sushi), one night in a "nice" modern American and the other two, I'm open to suggestions. Wouldn't want every night to be top dollar, but certainly one night could be. We'll be staying downtown and won't have a car, so walking or taxi is the way to go.

one night in Philly

My wife and I are staying at the Sofitel Saturday night and looking for a restaurant within walking distance. We're open to all cuisines, but favor modern American. Looking for something nice, but relaxed.
