Chandler / Vietnamese -- Hot Spots

Anise (Dobson and Warner, across from Lee Lee's
Blue Moon (Dobson & Main, across from Mekong Plaza)
Pho Ao Sen (Dobson & Baseline)
Pahu Thanh (Southern & Country Club)
Khai Hoan (Apache & McClintock)
Saigon Pho on Alma School and Knox (S of Warner)

There's no cluster of them in a single spot besides the intersection on Dobson & Warner or Dobson & Main by the two markets. I'd say they are scattered up and down Dobson from Chandler to Mesa.

Must have 'The Hat's" Pastrami [moved from Site Talk]

Not what you're asking for... but have you tried Miracle Mile deli in PHX? IMO much better than The Hat. There are 3 locations... Arrowhead Towne Ctr, Camelback Colonnade and Scottsdale Promenade.

Where's the best Cheapinese?

Bejing on Alma School & Germann... $4.99 lunch specials 7 days a week from 11am-3pm. All specials comes with your choice of a drink, soup or eggroll. Eggrolls are blah... but soups are decent... egg drop, wonton or hot and sour. I usually get the General Tso Chicken here... crunchy, sweet and tangy... yumm...

McChicken @ McDonalds

Don't have to ask me twice! Deal! =)

King Taco style burros and tacos in PHX???

I feel you on this one! I'm longing for some King Taco's sopes! I'll have to try La Tolteca also. Now, where can we find sauce like King Taco's green sauce or Michaocan's brownish/red sauce?

McChicken @ McDonalds

Once in a while I get a craving for a McChicken. I grew up in Los Angeles and was used to the plain McChicken. Last year I moved to AZ and *thought* they changed the McChicken to a Hot & Spicy McChicken and I did not like it at all. However, on a recent trip to LA, I stopped by a McD's and saw that plain McChicken was on the menu. I was so happy, I *thought* they changed it back because nobody liked it but this was not the case. Since being back in AZ I have visitied 3 different McD's and they all only have the Hot & Spicy variation. I'm wondering, does this vary by each location or the whole entire state?

Best Restaurants Close By Us? (Chandler, AZ)

I just moved out of the Ocotillo area recently after living there for 6 months. Here are some places around the area that I like:

Tortas el Guero (Arizona Ave. & Galveston) for lots of different types of tortas
Morenos (Arizona Ave. & Galveston next door to Tortas el Guero) mexican food
Honmachi (Alma School & Queen Creek) for sushi and teppanyaki
China King (Ray Rd. & Alma School) for dim sum
Tokyo House (Alma School & Warner) for teriyaki chicken/beef bowls
Tao Garden (Alma School & Warner) for chinese food
Lee's Sandwich (Dobson & Warner) for vietnamese sandwiches
AJs Fine Food (Alma School & Chandler Heights) for a quick lunch- sandwiches, pizza and salad.
Aloha Kitchen (Alma School & a little south of Guadalupe) for hawaiian plate lunch
Patsy Grimaldis (Alma School & Queen Creek) for pizza

Hope that helps.

Phx/East Valley: Chinese Donut, Dessert Tofu, Thai Boat Noodle?

Eww I can't stand You Tiao thats really dense!

Anyway, I was at LeeLee's this afternoon to buy ingredients to make Gyudon for my Yoshinoya fix and I noticed packaged You Tiao from a place called Sun Valley Bakery. Do you know anything about this place? Would I be able to go to their location one morning and get fresh ones maybe? It looks like they're 35th Ave, North of Indian School.

Sun Valley Bakery & Coffee

Phx/East Valley: Chinese Donut, Dessert Tofu, Thai Boat Noodle?

Here are some items I've been missing from Southern Cali and haven't been able to find here. I would like places where I can purchase them freshly made and not where I can buy ingredients to make it myself.

1) Chinese Donut (You Tiao)
2) Dessert Tofu in Sweet Ginger Syrup (Doufu Fa)
I would like some place where its served warm and fresh and not the ready packed containers found at markets. Maybe a dimsum place?
3) Thai Boat Noodles

Also, are there any places that makes something similar to a Yoshinoya Beef Bowl?

Phx: Cactus Cooler soda

I went to Food City, Ranch Market (2 locations), BevMo, called Pops and no Cactus Cooler found. However, I had friends bring me a couple 2 liters when they came out to visit last month. =)

Phx: Cactus Cooler soda

Where can I find it?

Portuguese sausage in Phoenix?

LeeLee Market in Chandler has a few different kinds of Portuguese sausages in their freezer section next to the fish balls, beef balls, and such. I've never tried them but they look similar to the Portuguese sausages my friend brings back from Maui.

Review: The Siamese Cat - Tempe, AZ (w/ photos!)

Next time I will try Lemongrass. Have any of you tried Thai Rama on Camelback (11th ave?, i think). We were suppose to go there but I got the bf to drive out to Siamese Cat instead. Boy did I get points minus for that. Also any good affordable food places to try for our next trip? This last trip consist of mediocre meals. I got some recomendations for some interesting restaurants before we headed out that way, but we're still broke college students that don't wanna spend more than $50 (for the both of us) for each meal. Thanks.

Review: The Siamese Cat - Tempe, AZ (w/ photos!)

About 3 weeks ago, I was visiting Phoenix and this was one of the places I tried after reading about it on the boards. The place is hard to find! If not for the GPS, we would've missed it. Anyway, I was disappointed!!! We started off with the appetizer sampler. It was good. I ordered the Pad ka pow with ground chicken and the bf had that pad see eww with shrimp. It started off good so I was hoping that our food to come were good also. We were both disappointed. The pad ka pow lacked flavor and the pad see eww was cooked with a weird tasting soy sauce. It reminded me more of chinese style chow fun because it was soy sauce flavor with lots of bean sprout, only the soy sauce didn't taste good. Maybe I'm just spoiled by the countless good thai restaurants out here in Los Angeles. But that had to be one of the worst and most expensive thai restaurant I've ever tried.

Grill Square in Mesa (Fiesta Mall)

About 3 weeks ago, I was visiting Phoenix and this was one of the places I tried. Nothing to rave about. We had the lettuce wraps that I thought were decent. I thought the water chestnut were too huge and chunky though. I also had the shrimp scampi pasta that I was not a fan of. It was bland and came in a pool of oil. The bf had the beef skewers with mushroom. He really liked it (he likes almost everything, lol), but I found it to be okay. the people were very nice and attentive. The chef came out and spoke with us for a bit. They sounded like they were planning to turn it to some kind of social hot spot and have special themed nights for some days of the week. I dont know, nothing special to me.

Phx: Im search of...

Thanks everyone for the quick response. So it looks like I'm deciding between China King or giving Golden Buddha another try.

Phx: Im search of...

I will be staying in the Biltmore area. But also will be spending some time in Scottsdale, Tempe, Gilbert and Glendale. I don't mind driving if I can do some sight seeing along the way.

Well, I guess it will be scorching hot out that way so I guess I will have to try both Mary Coyle and Sugar Bowl.Yum, can't wait.

Phx: Im search of...

Two things...

1. A good, old fashion ice cream shop? (not gelato)

and...

2. Any dim sum better than C-fu or Golden Buddha? or should I give Golden Buddha another chance? Been to both. Golden Buddha was a better one, but still just... mediocre. But possibly could've been an off day for them.

Thanks.

Also, a few weeks ago, I asked for some recs for a trip to AZ and I got some great response. My trip was postponed but I'm finally heading out there this Thursday. Thanks everyone for their recs and I can't wait to try them. I will post back on my trip. ;)

Where to buy small (school-size) milk cartons?

i use to buy the the little containers of milk and oj at Driftwood. They're not in cartons though... they're in plastic containers. You can purchase the small ones (half pints) in package of 15 each for whole sale price... milk was around 5 bucks a pack. But than, this was a couple years ago, not sure if it has changed.

A bacon-wrapped hot dog emergency!

You can find them at echo park. sometimes at the park or on sunset and echo park ave.

Best Chili Fries

The best chili cheese fries I've ever had is at Cypress Best Burger. It is huge! I can never finish it. A few years ago, it used to be $2.25 for an order!!! Now, I think it's a little less than $4 for an order. Much tastier and cheaper than The Hat.

Cypress Best Burgers
3249 N Figueroa St
Los Angeles, CA 90065-1525
Phone: (323) 223-1505

Variations on Chili Cheese Fries

If you like Alberto's carne asada fries, you'll like carne asada fries at Carnitas Michaocan at the Lincoln Heights location... they use the saucy nacho kinda cheese instead of that shredded kind that gets cold quickly and bunch up together. Also, not to far down on Figueroa St. is Cypress Burgers. It's the best chili cheese fries I've ever had!!!

Long Beach: Good food, ethnic food

i think i've been here... they have papaya salad also right?

Long Beach: Good food, ethnic food

You can order from both menus!!! japanese and thai... great for indecisive people like me. the sushi is fairly good and everything i've tried from the thai menu was always very good.

Long Beach: Good food, ethnic food

Siem Reap is pretty good. Also another Cambodian restaurant on Anaheim, a little before Siem Reap, on the left side (coming from Belmont Shore) is Monorom. I love their chicken with lemongrass. and also their fish rice soup with rice noodle is good also. It's in a little plaza with a bakery and market.

For sushi and thai food in one restaurant... there's Aki Sushi and Bai Plu Thai.. (www.akibaiplu.com) on 7th st... and i believe Walnut?

Going to PHX

Okay so I will be visiting PHX in a couple of weeks and I would like to know where to eat... (lunch and dinner) I will be staying in N. Scottsdale but I am willing to drive. I'm from LA and we pretty much have almost everything out here, but I know there are those "only in AZ" places...what are they?? (no asian though, with the exception of good sushi) ;)

Any opinions on Coral Reef in Atwater?

I also agree, awful!

Say what you will... I went to the Yard House and was very pleased... AGAIN.

I enjoy Yardhouse, a lot. I love their fries, spinach dip, and the garlic chicken noodles. Their steak and shrimp is pretty good, too. Oh and of course their happy hour 3-6pm or after 11pm, half off appetizers! The Long Beach location is the best. Pasadena is mediocre. I have also been to the Newport Beach, CA, San Diego, CA, Scottsdale, AZ and Glendale, AZ. and Long Beach is the best. ;)

Best Churros in LA area?

On the corner of Echo Park Ave. and Sunset there is a churro truck that sells churros that are 8 for $2. They are fresh-made and delicious. Usually they start to set up there about 4pm..

Starbucks anyone???

I also get tea with melon, but black tea and with a splash of strawberry sauce. So it would be venti iced black tea with melon syrup and a splash strawberry sauce

or sometimes venti soy chai latte with 2 pumps vanilla
