Orris is changing (a lot)....
Decided to try out the new menu on Mother's Day. Food was just as delicious as before. Old favorites like the shrimp tempura with curry flavor and the shrimp ravioli were just as we remembered. We also had the seafood marinara, bacon carbonara, and the mushroom and mustard green pastas. All were excellent. The mustard green pasta reminded me of a Chinese noodle dish and was very memorable. Excellent food but am worried as there were very few patrons. Hope business picks up!
AAA Thai Market (Venice and Sepulveda)
It's kinda open. I went in last week and it had bare bones groceries but most of the shelves are bare and the fridge had only a couple of things. Nothing exciting yet. I asked if they were going to have more groceries and prepared foods, and they said they're still waiting on their city permit...
Mother's Day takeout?
My grandmother is awaiting hip replacement surgery and can't really get out of the house, so my family wants to take our mother's day celebration to her. Anybody have a good place to get nice takeout for Mother's day in the Los Angeles area? Things that will hold up to a 1 hour drive would be best. Many thanks!
New to Palos Verdes - seeking recommendations
chinese (none are thaaat good) but: shanghai palace (shanghainese), harbor palace (cantonese seafood)
japanese is actually rather good as there are many salarymen and first generation japanese in the southbay. my favs that are closest to PV are iccho, koraku, and curry house.
i've eaten pizza at lamppost pizza for the last 30+ years and it's a place where you can grab a pizza and beer and watch the lakers/dodgers game with the family.
i know that san pedro can be a little far depending where on the hill you live, so we tend to frequent torrance a bit more when i visit.
Top Chef All-Stars - Ep. #11 - 02/23/11 (Spoilers)
dale!!!??? why do they keep consistently mediocre chefs while sending gifted chefs home? i'm losing interest in the finale cuz it won't have the top 2, 3, or 4 chefs. lame.
Coco Ichibanya in Torrance
Anybody try the new branch of the famous curry restaurant chain in Torrance? Just saw it driving back home and looks pretty nice.

Hide Sushi visit...
glad you posted this. i think hide is a great place for very decent and moderately priced sushi. in fact it's my dad's favorite place. he used to live in the neighborhood back in the 70s-80s and i don't think the place has changed much since then, and he likes it like that. you're not going to get nouveau japanese cuisine, but most people who go there aren't looking for that. straight up tempura and sushi.
Pizzeria Mozza
haha. i'd like to see someone try that somewhere in monterey park. i think the waiters there might pistol whip you.
ISO Taiwanese sit-down, family-style dinner
Had a very nice sit down meal with my family a few weeks ago at Cafe Fusion in Arcadia. It's nice cuz the decor is quite modern and the place is very clean. The whole fish with lotus seed is delicious as is the pork rump. They had a good version of three cups chicken as well. Also it's the only place I've had Taiwanese style raw cockles. Definitely worth a trip esp if you're family is looking for something on the nicer side.

Tacos in the Westside
My wife and I eat tacos here on the westside pretty regularly and we like 'em in this order:
1. Tacos Por Favor
2. El Super Taco (although as previously mentioned, the tortas are the real star here)
3. Tacomiendo
4. Pili's Tacos (only when drunk and around the area)
Diner Food on the Westside
hmmm....will definitely try peppy's. sounds like a good divey, old school diner.
Diner Food on the Westside
My wife and I were watching a Food Network show on some old school diners, and I got really nostalgic about this diner we used to go to all the time in Torrance called the Parasol diner. Had great pancakes, blue plate specials, sandwiches, and pies. Anybody recommend somewhere in West LA where the food is old school, where I won't find compote next to my pancakes, and the clientele is equally old school?
If you moved to the Palos Verdes area, where would you end up eating?
Nobody actually eats in PV. I spent my entire childhood there, and I think the only places actually in Palos Verdes that we ate were:
Fu Yuan Lo: Americanized Chinese but it was the ONLY Chinese in 1980.
McDonald's: since deceased
Admiral Risty's: for "special occasions"
Torrance, Redondo, Lomita, and Gardena are at your fingertips though. You've just got to readjust and understand that any good food is 20 minutes away.
DineLA- running reviews of places so far
Went to Marrakesh for DineLA simply because I've been fiending for Morroccan food for maybe a year. The place was almost empty except for three other couples also doing the DineLA thing (note: it was also 6 pm on a Monday). The soup was not bad, but nothing super. The salad which was cucumbers with mint, pickled carrots, and a baba ghanoush type dish was pretty good. The chicken with olives and preserved lemons was pretty decent, and the lamb was just meh. BUT the bistilla! The bistilla was as I remembered it in Morrocco. Powdered sugar on top, flaky crust, and creamy/chicken goodness. Sweet and savory. Yum! And they give you a ton. We were a party of two and we pretty much have enough for two more meals. I saw a lone diner next to us who basically got served the same amount of food. So basically, I recommend it for the atmosphere (minus the Rubinesque belly dancer) and the bistilla. Might be interesting to come back and just order bistilla and some more interesting dishes.
Anyways, off to Grace tomorrow.
Cemitas @ Venice and 405... are they gone?
it's the same truck that's at the smart and final on venice blvd in culver city in the afternoons. but yeah, i haven't seen it there in a little while. i did enjoy their cemitas about 3 weeks ago though on the late night.
fresh tortillas on west side?
when stayed briefly in houston, many of the local supermarkets sold freshly made tortillas which were SOOOO good. do any markets or even taco shops sell freshly made tortillas to the public on the west side? thanks!

ISO - Good Indian Rest. Brentwood or W.LA?
not indian per se but just went to Jasmine Market and it was definitely among the best South Asian food I've had on the westside.
Had the fish sauce rice noodle soup, chicken curry, egg rolls, samosas and garlic naan. all came out to $20 and could have fed 3-4 ppl. this place is da bomb! the owner/family who run it are SUPER nice and helpful.
i'm not indian but it pretty much tasted like a mix of indian with a little southeast asian thrown in. TASTY!!

Best Zha Liang? (Rice Sheet-Wrapped Chinese Doughnuts)
agreed. i find their yo tiao to be excessively greasy. and i know they're fried. i prefer yi mei.
Suggestions for Santa Barbara????
it was ca' dario - nice, intimate. seating is a little tight. food esp pasta was very good
Suggestions for Santa Barbara????
went this past summer for a weekend and all meals were awesome:
1. lunch on the pier at santa barbara shellfish company (just ordered at the window and ate on the wooden benches outside)
2. hungry cat (i don't live near hollywood so this is the only one i've been to) - had the pub burger and the whole snapper (roasted with tomatoes, figs, olives)
3. small italian place (will get back to you on this-killing me that i can't remember)

the arancini and the pizzas were great too! fantastic local spot. we love fraiche, and we're sold on riva too now.
a better chinese breakfast?
After coming back from Taiwan, the wife and I were fiending for Chinese breakfast.
We just spent the last two weekends trying to find a comparable experience at Yung Ho King Tou Chiang and Yi Mei.
We found Yung Ho King to be pretty over hyped and very greasy (didn't feel so well afterwards). We had tsung yo bing, shao bing, gua bao, jiu tsai he ze, beef noodle soup, yo tiao, and tou chiang. While the yo tiao was also very greasy, it was crispy and maybe the only good thing out of the kitchen. The tsung yo bing was dripping grease and didn't taste of any scallions at all. The place was packed, so I guess most people didn't feel the same as us. I just don't get that place.
Yi Mei, on the other hand, was very good. We had the yo tiao, tou chiang, xiao lum bao, gua bao, shao bing with pork belly, oyster pancake, jiu tsai he ze, and tsung yo bing. Pretty much everything was excellent except for the oyster pancake.
Now we are just wondering if there are any other contenders for a better chinese breakfast in the san gabriel valley? Any help hounds?
