Is Walrus & Carpenter “the most important” restaurant in Seattle?

With that as the criteria, Ivar's, Ray's, Anthony's or Salty's comes to mind.

Good fruitcake north of Seattle

As a follow-up, I found a Grandma's fruitcake as made by the Beatrice Bakery, at Fred Meyer. It gets some good reviews on some of the online sites; I found it to be just OK but somewhat on the sweet side. A good amount of nuts, but the fruit is pineapple, cherries and raisins only.

Good fruitcake north of Seattle

I find the Costco fruitcake too sweet, and most of the mass-market fruitcakes in the grocery stores to be unexciting. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good bakery, grocery store or mass-market fruitcake north of Seattle that I can pick up in person? I don't want to do mail order or make my own this year.

Dinner in Everett near Comcast Center?

Buck's American Cafe, Terracotta Red, Majestic, the New Mexicans and Prohibition Grill are all within walking distance of the arena and are good choices, in my view.

Grocery Store Rotisserie Chicken

We still go back to the Costco chicken as the best. We have tried the Safeway, Fred Meyer and Albertson's chickens, and find Costco to be superior. However, in terms of the hot or cold fried chicken, Albertson's is head and shoulders above the other grocery store chains.

Zen Garden in Mill Creek closed

Huh. I just noticed yesterday when I was riding my bicycle past it and read the sign on the door. It is a huge space and overhead must be a killer.

Zen Garden in Mill Creek closed

The Zen Garden restaurant in Mill Creek is closed. Known for Dim Sum, the owners were civilly-evicted by the Sheriff's Office due to non-payment of rent. It is unknown if the restaurant will return at the same or different location.

Everett Lunch...save me!

The New Mexicans, on Hewitt, is new and very good. Curry Bistro for the lunch buffet. The Irishmen, the Depot Cafe, Fish Tail Pub, Buck's American and the Majestic are all good places right down town.

Is Tapioca the Best Thickener for Fruit Pies?

I have been unable to find ClearJel in the Seattle area, and I keep forgetting to order it online. I have tried tapioca (whole and ground), cornstarch, arrowroot and potato starch. Potato starch is my go-to thickener these days for fruit pies.

Masala Bar and Grill in Bothell closed

My wife and I stopped at Masala on the Bothell-Everett highway late last week. They are now closed, with a sign on the door saying that they are moving to Northgate.

It looks like we are back to either Mayuri down the road or Clay Pit up the road.

Liquor at the grocery store

We buy perhaps three bottles of liquor per year so the privatization was largely of academic interest to us. We did discover, however, that the Kirkland Signature golden margarita mix, at $ 11 for 1.75 liters, is pretty darn tasty and is a good value. The liquor store closest to me in Mill Creek closed.

What is your experience with Charles at Smugglers Cove?

I have eaten at Charles many times over the years, usually in the context of dinners with small groups of people from work as a social function. I am somewhat underwhelmed. I think the food is OK at best, service is spotty and the quality-to-cost ratio is not very high. It seems to be very popular at prom night for the local high schools, representing as it does 'high-end' dining in Mukilteo.

Clay Pit Cuisine of India. Almost a stellar experience.

Living in Mill Creek, we have eaten at Clay Pit often. We now prefer the Masala Grill, a few miles south of Mill Creek on the Bothell-Everett highway. We have not tried the buffet there, though. The food at Masala is more reasonably priced and better spiced.

Lynnwood Whole Foods, Spring 2012

I will certainly be driving over from MillCreek. Now if they could just build a Trader Joe's in the Mill Creek/Bothell area, things would be peachy. Trying to get in and out of the TJ by Everett Mall is an adventure between the traffic and the parking lot there. The Lynnwood TJ has the advantage of a Half Price Books right next door, so that is worth a trip between the two.

Lynnwood/Edmonds local honey search

Yes. At this intersection is the Thomas Lake Shopping Center with an Albertson's as the anchor tenant and a Shell gas station on the corner. Take exit 186 off of northbound I-5, turn right at the top of the exit and drive about 4.5 miles on 132nd and when you get to the Shell station, turn left at that intersection, and you will be on 35th Avenue SE. I rode my bicycle past the place yesterday to get the address for you, and the house is at the intersection of 35th and 118th Place SE.

Lynnwood/Edmonds local honey search

Go to 132nd Street and 35th Avenue SE in the Mill Creek area and turn left (north) on 35th Avenue SE and drive up about 1/3rd of a mile. Look to your right, and you see a rambler with a sign advertising local honey. There is a garden shed in the front yard where you can buy jars of honey and honeycombs. You just leave the money. This is just north of the Pioneer Trails entrance, probably in the 118th block.

Grocery Store Roasted Chicken - Who has the best?

Another vote for Costco. For grocery-store fried chicken, Albertson's all the way. So much tastier than Safeway or Fred Meyer's.

This just in: Alligator Soul in Everett out of business

New as of yesterday, the Alligator Soul, a popular Cajun restaurant in Everett, is closed for good, according to a sign on the door and their Facebook page. The economy is cited as the reason.

A pity. I liked their food a lot and my wife and I ate there often.

Excellent Gumbo at Shultzy's

I found the jambalaya, crawfish etouffe, ham hocks and bread pudding to be excellent. Oddly enough, they don't make an oyster po' boy, but the blackened catfish po' boy at lunch is very good indeed. The crawfish and grits is an excellent appetizer, as are the crawfish beignets.

Excellent Gumbo at Shultzy's

I have been quite pleased with the gumbo at Alligator Soul in Everett. In addition to the original, they have a chicken, catfish, alligator and seafood gumbo. It is made with a dark roux base and has plenty of okra and andouille sausage in it.

Where to dine in Everett?

In addition to what has already been mentioned, other options include Alligator Soul, Marimba, Prohibition Grille, Curry Bistro, Z's Burgers, Scuttlebutt, Bobby's Hawaiian, Lombardi's, Cafe Dijon, Anthony's Woodfire, and Depot Cafe and Smokehouse. If you had not excluded Asian, I would have recommended Terracotta Red and Thai Bistro.
